Riesa (Upper Sorbian: Ryzawa) is a town in the district of Meißen in Saxony, Germany. It is located on the river Elbe, approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of Dresden.

Riesa station is the only passenger station of the town of Riesa in the German state of Saxony. It is a regular stop for Intercity and Intercity-Express services. The station is located at kilometer 65.8 of the Leipzig–Dresden railway. In addition, it is at the beginning of the Riesa–Chemnitz railway and the disused Riesa–Nossen railway. Since December 2013 the station has been part of the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland network.

The Jahna is a river of Saxony, Germany. It is a left tributary of the Elbe, which it joins in Riesa.

The Döllnitz is a river of Saxony, Germany. It flows through the towns Mügeln and Oschatz, and joins the river Elbe in Riesa.

Zeithain is a municipality in the district of Meißen, in Saxony, Germany. Historically, it is known for the Zeithain Encampment (Zeithainer Zeltlager or Zeithainer Lustlager), which was a huge agglomeration of tents and troops, involving the whole 27,000-men-strong army of August the Strong. This event took place from 1 to 26 June 1730.During World War II, a large prisoner-of-war camp, Stalag IV-B/H, was located in Zeithain. A memorial and museum commemorate it.The first encounter of US and Soviet troops on German soil occurred on Elbe Day, 25 April 1945, at 12 p.m. on the banks of the Elbe in the village of Lorenzkirch, Zeithain. There is a memorial stone commemorating this event.

This place name means arrow in Sorbian. Strehla includes the following subdivisions: Forberge Görzig/Trebnitz Großrügeln Lößnig Oppitzsch Paußnitz Unterreußen

Leopold III of Belgium and his family were held in Castle Hirschstein from June 1944 to March 1945 by the Nazis.

The experience of municipal reform in Liebschützberg is a subject of a study by Andreas Kretschmar (who is, since 2001, mayor of nearby Oschatz).
