Rowan County ( roh-AN) is a county in the U.S. state of North Carolina that was formed in 1753, as part of the British Province of North Carolina. It was originally a vast territory with unlimited western boundaries, but its size was reduced to 524 square miles (1,360 km2) after several counties were formed from Rowan County in the 18th and 19th centuries. As of the 2020 census, its population was 146,875. Its county seat, Salisbury, is the oldest continuously populated European-American town in the western half of North Carolina. Rowan County is located northeast of Charlotte, and is considered part of the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Mid-Carolina Regional Airport is assigned RUQ by the FAA and SRW by the IATA. The airport's ICAO identifier is KRUQ.

Geographically, Locke Township occupies 30.66 square miles (79.4 km2) in central Rowan County. The only incorporated municipality here is a portion of the city of Salisbury, the county seat of Rowan County.

China Grove Township is one of fourteen townships in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The township had a population of 23,348 according to the 2000 census. Geographically, China Grove Township occupies 38.64 square miles (100.1 km2) in southern Rowan County. Incorporated municipalities here include the town of China Grove, Landis, and portions of the Cabarrus County city of Kannapolis. The township's southern border is with Cabarrus County.

Bostian Heights is an unincorporated community in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The community is located on North Carolina Highway 152, 3.3 miles (5.3 km) east of China Grove. The John Stigerwalt House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located near Bostian Heights.

China Grove is a town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,434 at the 2020 census. The town is located just north of Landis and south of Salisbury. It was one of the first towns in the United States to have Rural Free Mail Delivery. The town was named for a grove of chinaberry trees planted near the depot.

China Grove Roller Mill is a historic roller mill building located at China Grove, Rowan County, North Carolina. It was built in 1903, and is a three-story, rectangular brick building, with several later additions. It retains the intact original milling machinery.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Fulton Heights Historic District is a national historic district located at Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 439 contributing buildings and 2 contributing structures in predominantly residential section of Salisbury. It largely developed between about 1903 and 1948, and includes notable examples of Colonial Revival and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Notable buildings include the T.A. Ludwick House, Choate-Blount House, Lauriston Hardin House, Williams-Kesler House, Lewis D. Peeler House, F.W. Kirk House, Second Reformed Presbyterian Church (1913), First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (1939), Calvin H. Wiley School (1916), R. L. Foil and Company Grocery (1905), the Albright Cash Store, and the Piggly Wiggly Grocery.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Soft drink producer Cheerwine and regional supermarket Food Lion are located in Salisbury and Rack Room Shoes was founded there.

Calvin H. Wiley School, also known as the West Ward School, is a historic school building located at Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. The original building was built in 1916–1918, and is a two-story, rectangular brick building with Classical Revival style design elements. A classroom addition was built in 1921 and an auditorium and lunchroom added in 1951. The school closed in 1983, and was subsequently renovated into apartments.The school was named for Calvin H. Wiley, the first Superintendent of Public Instruction. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
