Douglaston station

Douglaston–Little Neck is a neighborhood in the northeastern part of the New York City borough of Queens. The community is located on the North Shore of Long Island, bordered to the east by the region of Great Neck in Nassau County, to the south by Glen Oaks and the North Shore Towers, and to the west by Bayside. The neighborhood is composed of two main sections. Little Neck is generally used to refer to the area east of Marathon Parkway and/or north of Northern Boulevard, while Douglaston is the rest of the neighborhood; these classifications may overlap depending on different interpretations of neighborhood boundaries. Each of these areas has several subsections. Douglaston–Little Neck represents one of the least traditionally urban communities in New York City, with many areas (particularly those north of Northern Boulevard) having a distinctly suburban feel, similar to that of Nassau County towns located nearby such as Great Neck. The area is also known for its historical society and other civic groups, notably the Douglaston Civic Association and the Douglas Manor Association. There are two historic districts, Douglas Manor and Douglaston Hill, and two houses, Allen-Beville House and Cornelius Van Wyck House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the neighborhood.Douglaston–Little Neck is located in Queens Community District 11 and its ZIP Codes are 11362 and 11363. It is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 111th Precinct. Politically, Douglaston–Little Neck is represented by the New York City Council's 19th and 23rd Districts.

Douglaston Hill Historic District is a national historic district in Douglaston, Queens, New York. It includes 83 contributing buildings and two contributing sites. The buildings include Zion Episcopal Church (1830), houses and garages, and commercial buildings. The sites are Zion cemetery and public park. It was laid out with very large lots in 1853, at the very beginning of a movement in the United States to create suburban gardens. The buildings include a number of fine examples of late-19th- and early 20th-century architectural styles such as Queen Anne, Shingle Style, and Colonial Revival. The majority of the buildings date between 1890 and 1940.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The area was recognized as a New York City designated landmark district in December 2004 by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.In 2012, some numbered streets in the historic district were renamed to their original names, with 43rd Avenue becoming Pine Street.

The Allen-Beville House is a historic house on the Little Neck peninsula in the Douglaston neighborhood of Queens, New York City. Constructed between 1848 and 1850, it is one of the few surviving 19th century structures in Queens built as a farmhouse that survives.The site was inherited by Daniel K. Allen from his uncle, Richard Allen. Originally a farm of 16 acres (65,000 m2), he had purchased the land from Elijah Allen, Philip Allen and Cornelius Van Wyck prior to 1820. In 1847, Benjamin Allen acquired the site and built the house. In the late 19th century, William P. Douglas, for whom Douglaston was named, purchased the home for use as a guest home for his estate, which was the original Douglaston Club building. When the clubhouse burned in 1917, the architects used this house as a model to create the current club. In 1905-06 the Douglas Manor Company bought the Douglas Estate and subdivided the land as a real estate development.The Allen-Beville House was given landmark status by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1977 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Cornelius Van Wyck House is an 18th-century Dutch Colonial home located on the shore of Little Neck Bay in the Douglaston section of Queens in New York City. This house overlooks Little Neck Bay and is well known for both its age and architecture, and especially for its original owners. It was designated as a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1966 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The Cornelius Van Wyck House is considered to be the "most impressive architectural remnant of the early Dutch Culture" in New York.

Zion Church is an inclusive Episcopal congregation in Douglaston, New York with members from throughout the borough of Queens, and from Nassau County. Zion is within the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, and is one of the oldest churches in Queens, standing at the top of the hill overlooking Douglaston and Little Neck.

Douglaston Manor Windmill (c.1870s-1988) was a Dutch windmill built in Littleneck, New York to pump water for farming. Alley Pond park has a standing windmill (built 2005) that is a replica of the Douglaston Manor windmill. The windmill's tower was relocated to Alley pond after being threatened with demolition in November 1986, having been originally situated on Arleigh Road in Douglaston. A committee formed to save the windmill raised US$50,000 to relocate the structure.

Douglaston Historic District is a national historic district in Douglaston, Queens, New York. It includes 631 contributing buildings and three contributing sites on a mile-long peninsula extending into Little Neck Bay. All but one of the buildings are in residential use and the majority were built in the early- to mid-20th century as a planned suburban community known as Douglas Manor. In the early 20th century, the Rickert-Finlay Realty Company of Manhattan purchased 175 acres (0.71 km2) of the Douglas' family holdings, and formed the Douglas Manor Association, creating a planned community. Many of the houses in this area were built in architectural styles popular at the time, such as Tudor, Mediterranean, Colonial Revival, and Arts and Crafts. Located within the district are the separately listed Cornelius Van Wyck House (c. 1735) and Allen-Beville House (c. 1848-1850). Another notable early building is the Van Zandt manor house (c. 1819), which is now the Douglaston Club.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. In 1997, New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Douglas Manor as the Douglaston Historic District, ensuring that no new buildings or external alterations could be made without the commission's approval.

Alley Pond Park is the second-largest public park in Queens, New York City, occupying 655.3 acres (265.2 ha). The park is bordered to the east by Douglaston, to the west by Bayside, to the north by Little Neck Bay, and to the south by Union Turnpike. The Cross Island Parkway travels north-south through the park, while the Long Island Expressway and Grand Central Parkway travel east-west through the park. The park primarily consists of woodlands south of the Long Island Expressway and meadowlands north of the expressway. It is run and operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Alley Pond Park was mostly acquired and cleared by the city in 1929, as authorized by a resolution of the New York City Board of Estimate in 1927. The park contains the Queens Giant, a tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) that is the tallest carefully measured tree in New York City and possibly the oldest living thing in the New York metropolitan area. The Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC), with a library, museum and animal exhibits, is located in the northern part of the park, on the south side of Northern Boulevard.

Udalls Cove is a marshland and wetland area located in Queens, New York City, off Little Neck Bay between Douglaston and Little Neck Bay. It is one of the few remaining salt marshes on the North Shore in the Metropolitan area; another being the salt marsh southwest of the cove, at Alley Pond Park. For many years, activists and locals have struggled to ensure that these marshlands and wetlands were properly preserved in their natural state by preventing development in the region. These marshlands/wetlands are home to bird and animal life such as muskrats, egrets, and herons, as well as marine life and plants. One of the key agitators to preserve Udall's Cove and its plant and animal Life was Aurora Gareiss, founder of the Udalls Cove Preservation Committee.The marsh wetlands of Udalls Cove measure up to 100 acres (40 ha). The cove is a haven for birds and underwater life, as well as a favorite spot for school children with an interest in studying them. It contains a 15-acre oblong ravine, which was left behind as a remnant of the Ice Age by a glacier. The ravine measures 200 feet wide, between backyards of single-family homes, and has fresh-water streams in it that feed Udalls Cove.

Little Neck is a station on the Long Island Rail Road's Port Washington Branch in the Little Neck neighborhood of Queens, New York City. The station is at Little Neck Parkway and 39th Road, about half a mile (800 m) north of Northern Boulevard. Little Neck station is 14.5 miles (23.3 km) from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan, and is the easternmost station on the Port Washington Branch in New York City. The station house is located on the south (eastbound) side, unlike most station houses on the Port Washington Branch. The station is part of the CityTicket program and is in Zone 3. Little Neck Parkway at the west end of the station crosses the line at the only at-grade railroad crossing on the Port Washington Branch, and one of the few remaining in New York City. It is regarded as one of the most dangerous railroad crossings in the city, as the other crossings carry few trains, usually only freight trains (such as on the Montauk Branch west of Jamaica station and the Bushwick Branch, both un-electrified).

The Belgrave Sewer District (also known as the Belgrave Water Pollution Control District) is a public sewer district in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. It serves portions of the Great Neck area of Long Island's North Shore.

Queensborough Community College (QCC) is a community college in Bayside, Queens, New York. One of seven community colleges within the City University of New York (CUNY) system, Queensborough enrolls more than 12,000 students and more than 770 Instructional Faculty.Queensborough opened in 1959 as a campus of the State University of New York and in 1965 transferred to CUNY. Its mission is to prepare students to transfer to a four-year institution or enter the work force. The college offers more than 40 associate's degree programs as well as certificate and continuing education programs. Queensborough is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
