The Drents-Friese Wold National Park is a national park in the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Drenthe, covering more than 61 km2 (24 sq mi), founded in 2000. It consists of forests, heath lands and drift-sands.

Zorgvlied is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 23 km west of Assen. The municipality received its name by the former villa "Zorgvlied".

Oude Willem (Low Saxon: Olde Willem) is a hamlet in the Dutch provinces of Drenthe and Friesland. It lays within the municipalities of Westerveld and Ooststellingwerf. Oude Willem lies about 21 km southwest of Assen.Oude Willem (Old William) is named a 19th century shepherd who used the heath for grazing. There are about 15 houses on the Frisian side, and 10 on the Drenthe side.There is a monument for the crew of the bomber Halifax B11. W231 who were shot down on 22 November 1943, and crashed in Oude Willem.

Doldersum is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 24 km northwest of Hoogeveen. It was first mentioned in 1402 as Doldersem. The etymology is unknown.On 7 to 8 September 1944, 21 young men escaped from a forced labour camp in Vledder. The resistance hid them in the forest of Doldersum. One of the hiding places was discovered, and seven were shot. One survived, but remained handicapped. A monument has been placed on the heath in their honour.

Wapse is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 21 km northwest of Hoogeveen. The village was first mentioned in 1384 as "Johanni de Wapse". The etymology is unknown. Wapse is a circular esdorp from the Early Middle Ages. There used to be five hamlets around the central communal pasture.Wapse was home to 252 people in 1840. In 1897, a cooperative dairy factory was founded in Wapse. In 2016, the village school was scheduled to be closed due to lack of students, however protests have prevented its closure.

Aekinga (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈeː.kɪŋ.ɣaː]; West Frisian: Aekingea; Stellingwarfs: Aekinge) is a hamlet in the Dutch municipality of Ooststellingwerf in the province of Friesland. The hamlet consists of approximately 15 houses with 40 residents.The hamlet is located southwest of Appelscha, of which it is officially a part. It is located on the edge of Drents-Friese Wold National Park. Aekingerzand, a sand drift that is part of the national park, is named after the hamlet. The eponymous main road of the hamlet of Aekinga runs from the old center of Appelscha, the Boerenstreek to the N381 where it comes to a dead end.

Elsloo (West Frisian: Elslo) is a village consisting of around 600 inhabitants in the municipality of Ooststellingwerf in the east of Friesland in the Netherlands. The hamlets considered part of the village are Tronde and Canada.

Langedijke (West Frisian: Langedike) is a village consisting of about 290 inhabitants in the municipality of Ooststellingwerf in 2017 in the east of Friesland, the Netherlands. The village was first mentioned in 1408 as Langedijc, and means "long dike". The church was demolished in 1830, and only a bell tower remained. The bell dates from 1300 and is one of the oldest bells of Frieslands.In 1840, Langedijke was home to 36 people.

Westerveld (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌʋɛstərˈvɛlt] ) is a municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. The municipality Westerveld was established in 1998 out of the municipalities of Diever, Dwingeloo, Havelte, and Vledder. Westerveld is crossed by a channel, the Drentsche Hoofdvaart. There are also two National Parks situated in the municipality, the Drents-Friese Wold and Dwingelerveld.

Boschoord is a hamlet in the north-eastern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Westerveld, Drenthe. It was first mentioned in 1846 as Kolonie No 7. It was founded as work colony of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid. In 1907, it was named Boschoord, and Bosch is a reference to Johannes van de Bosch, the founder of Maatschappij van Weldadigheid. Landgoed Boschoord is still owned by the company, and has become a 650 hectares (1,600 acres) nature area which consists of forest and moorland.

The Pinksterlanddagen (Pentecost days) is the largest anarchist event in the Netherlands. It is a long tradition that goes back to 1924 when anarchist young people from Frisia organized this meeting for the first time. In 1933, the campground in Appelscha was bought by anti-militarist workers, and it is here that the festival has taken place ever since, every year during the Pentecost on the anarchist, alcohol-free camping site Tot Vrijbezzinnen.

Diever is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 18 km northwest of Hoogeveen. Diever is located near the Drentse Hoofdvaart, a major north–south route for pleasure boats in the province of Drenthe. Diever is located next to the Drents-Friese Wold, one of the national parks in the Netherlands, and a attraction for tourists. In the centre of Diever there is the brink, the village square with old buildings surrounding it. The Dutch Reformed Saint Pancratius-church is a 15th-century building, and considered one of the most beautiful churches of Drenthe. Diever was a separate municipality until 1998, when the new municipality of Westerveld was created.
