Shepreth railway station

Shepreth is a small village and civil parish in South Cambridgeshire, lying halfway between Cambridge and Royston.

L-Moor, Shepreth is a 6.6-hectare (16-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Shepreth in Cambridgeshire. It is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.The site is unploughed calcareous grassland which has diverse flora such as horseshoe vetch and felwort in drier areas, and devil's bit scabious and fen bedstraw in wetter ones. A stream provides a habitats, and the site is regarded by Natural England as very valuable for its invertebrates. Some areas are grazed by rabbits.There is access from Meldreth Road.

Barrington Pit is a 3.8-hectare (9.4-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Barrington in Cambridgeshire. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This site is described by Natural England as of national importance for its mammal fossils, most of which were found around 1900. Species include hippopotamuses, straight-tusked elephants, lions, aurochs and spotted hyenas. They probably date to the warm Eemian period, around 130,000 to 115,000 years ago.The site is private land, part of which is now covered by housing.

It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This large quarry is the only surviving exposure of the Cretaceous Cambridge Greensand. Fossils include brachiopods and fish teeth. It is overlain by thick sequences of chalk and Totternhoe Stone.Large parts of the site are a working quarry which is closed to the public, while other areas have been filled in and are now fields which are crossed by footpaths.

It is designated a 39.9-hectare (99-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest called Fowlmere Watercress Beds.Fowlmere's reedbeds and pools are fed by natural chalk springs and a chalk stream runs through the reserve. It has three hides, two of which are wheelchair-accessible. Special birds include kingfishers, water rails, sedge warblers, reed warblers and grasshopper warblers plus a roost of corn buntings in winter.
