The First Battle of Memphis was a naval battle fought on the Mississippi River immediately north of the city of Memphis, Tennessee on June 6, 1862, during the American Civil War. The engagement was witnessed by many of the citizens of Memphis. It resulted in a crushing defeat for the Confederate forces, and marked the virtual eradication of a Confederate naval presence on the river. Despite the lopsided outcome, the Union Army failed to grasp its strategic significance. Its primary historical importance is that it was the last time civilians with no prior military experience were permitted to command ships in combat. As such, it is a milestone in the development of professionalism in the United States Navy.

The West Memphis Commercial Historic District encompasses the largest concentration of historic commercial buildings in the central business district of West Memphis, Arkansas. The district extends along East Broadway (United States Route 70) between 7th and 10th Streets, and includes 22 historic buildings. Most of these buildings were built between 1930 and 1950, and are typically single-story brick buildings with vernacular commercial design. A number of the buildings have modest Art Deco features, such as the cornice at 801 East Broadway. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

President's Island is a peninsula on the Mississippi River in southwest Memphis, Tennessee. The city's major river port and an industrial park are located there.

The Lawrie House is a historic house at 600 North 7th Street in West Memphis, Arkansas. It is a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, with a side-gable roof and numerous projecting gables. The first floor is faced in brick veneer, giving the appearance of a raised basement. The main facade is dominated by its porch, which has a projecting gable roof supported by four square columns. Its main entry is flanked by sidelight windows and topped by a four-light lunette window and gable. The interior features elegant Colonial Revival woodwork. The house was built in 1939 by J. O. E. Beck, a plantation owner, as a wedding present for his daughter Elizabeth, who married Donald Lawrie.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Mound City is an unincorporated community in Crittenden County, Arkansas. Mound City township covers an area of 25.4 square miles. In 2009 it had a population of 318; 162 males and 156 females. Mound City is located about 6 mi (9.7 km) northwest of Memphis, Tennessee and near oxbow lakes that in the past were the main course of the Mississippi River. The river has changed its course and is now about 3 mi (4.8 km) east of Mound City.

Tabernacle Baptist Academy was a private school in West Memphis, Arkansas.

The Wilson Power and Light Company Ice Plant, later known as Delta Ice, is a historic industrial facility at 120 East Broadway in West Memphis, Arkansas. Built in 1930, it is a regionally distinctive brick structure, used for the manufacture and distribution of ice, a critical product that facilitated the shipment of perishable goods prior to the advent of refrigerated trucks. Its front facade is dominated by a loading dock, sheltered by a corrugated metal awning. The main decorative feature of the building is its parapet, formed of brick and cast stone. The interior retains original features, such as large 40-gallon vats which were used to produce 300-pound blocks of ice.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, at which time it was still in use as an icemaking facility.

West Memphis Christian School is a private, college preparatory Christian school located in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Sultana was a commercial side-wheel steamboat which exploded and sank on the Mississippi River on April 27, 1865, killing 1,167 people in what remains the worst maritime disaster in United States history. Constructed of wood in 1863 by the John Litherbury Boatyard in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sultana was intended for the lower Mississippi cotton trade. The steamer registered 1,719 tons and normally carried a crew of 85. For two years, she ran a regular route between St. Louis and New Orleans and was frequently commissioned to carry troops during the American Civil War. Although designed with a capacity of only 376 passengers, she was carrying 2,128 when three of the boat's four boilers exploded and caused it to sink near Memphis, Tennessee. The disaster was overshadowed in the press by events surrounding the end of the Civil War, including the killing of President Abraham Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth just the day before. No one was ever held accountable for the tragedy.

The International Port of Memphis is an active port in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. It is mainly located on President's Island, which is a peninsula. However, it also extends between miles 725 and 740 on both the Tennessee and Arkansas sides of the Mississippi River. It is the second largest inland port on the shallow draft portion of the Mississippi River, and the fifth largest inland port in the United States. It has the ability to connect to sea via the Mississippi River, by rail using any of the five Class 1 railroads in the city, by road via I-40 or I-55, and by air using FedEx.
