Parnitha

The Bafi Refuge (also spelt Mpafi) belongs to the Greek Mountaineering Club, E.O.S. Athens founded in 1928 in the Mount Parnitha National Park, at an altitude of 1160m, roughly 2.5 km from Mont Parness, inside the national park. Ιn April 1937 the refuge's foundation stone was laid. The first part was completed in Autumn of 1939 with money that was collected mainly by the members of the Mountaineering Club, but also other affiliated associations. Paths begin from the shelter leaving in all directions, which can offer small and easy walks of half and one hour or long and difficult walks for the fitter. Access to the refuge is from the street that goes up Parnitha to the casino “Mont Parness”, or from a marked path which begins from the car park of the cable car and via the ravine of Choynis, leading to the shelter. Also, Bathis Square buses of line 714 of OASA leave for the Casino of Parnitha. Today, the refuge is open all year round, it has organised cooking and it offers homemade food, refreshments and drinks. It provides the possibility of overnight stay, with three dormitories of 10, 20 and 30 places, three rooms with four beds, and one room in the loft of the shelter with two beds. During the winter there is central heating.

The Parnitha Funitel on Mount Parnitha is the successor of an aerial tramway constructed in the 1970s to serve Casino Mont Parnes, the most popular casino in the Athens area, located on one of the peaks of mount Parnitha. Also, it was a common way for Athenians to reach on the peak for family day trips, a popular habit even today. However, since April 2006, a newly built funitel, replacing the older one, was launched and it continues serving its previous purposes. Note, that it was not only a renovation, but a full construction on the place where the older funitel installation once used to be.

Leipsydrium, or Leipsydrion (Ancient Greek: Λειψύδριον), was a fortress of ancient Attica, in which the Alcmaeonidae fortified themselves after the death of Hipparchus, but was taken by the Peisistratidae after defeating the opposite party. Herodotus describes it as situated above Paeonia, and other authorities place it above Mount Parnes.The site of Leipsydrium is tentatively located near modern Gaitana,marathon.

Paeonidae or Paionidai (Ancient Greek: Παιονίδαι), was a deme of ancient Attica, associated with the tribe (phyle) Leontis. It was apparently the same as the Paeonia or Paionia (Παιονίη), which Herodotus located as being below the Attic fortress of Leipsydrium. The site of Paeonidae is located north of modern Acharnes (formerly Menidi) at the foot of Mount Parnes.According to the second-century geographer Pausanias, the Paeonidae were supposed to have been named after Paeon, the son of Antilochus, who was the son of Nestor, and one of the suitors of Helen, who fought in the Trojan War.

The Phyle Cave is a small cave on Mount Parnes near Fyli (Phyle), a suburb of Athens in Attica, Greece. In ancient Greece it was the site of a sanctuary to Pan and the nymphs. It is also known as Lychnospilia (Λυχνοσπηλιά), meaning lamp cave, for the large number of oil lamps found in the cave. It has been identified as the cave which occurs in the Dyskolos of Menander. The cave was excavated in 1901. Three votive reliefs found in the cave are now on display in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Because of its use for the veneration of Pan the cave is also called the Cave of Pan (Πάνειο άντρο). It was one of the five caves of Pan in the vicinity of ancient Athens.

Thrakomakedones (Greek: Θρακομακεδόνες from Thrace and Macedonia), is a town in the regional unit East Attica, in Attica region, Greece. It is a northern suburb of Athens. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Acharnes, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 3.550 km2.

Harma (Ancient Greek: Ἅρμα) was a fortress and town, but not a deme, of ancient Attica, near Phyle, situated on a height visible from Athens.The site of Harma is located at a site called Arma.

Peleces or Pelekes (Ancient Greek: Πήληκες) were three demoi of ancient Attica, forming a community, as τρίκωμοι, and probably, therefore, adjacent. If the reading in Thucydides is correct, διὰ Κρωπειᾶς, these demoi should be placed in the north of the Athenian plain, but many editors read διὰ Κεκροπίας. The site of Peleces is tentatively located near modern Chasia.

Tatoi (Greek: Τατόι, pronounced [ta.ˈto.i]) was the summer palace and 42 km2 (10,000 acres) estate of the former Greek royal family. The area is a densely wooded southeast-facing slope of Mount Parnitha, and its ancient and current official name is Dekeleia. It is located 27 km (17 mi) from the city centre of Athens and 2.5 km (2 mi) from Kifissia.

Varympompi or Varibobi (Greek: Βαρυμπόμπη) is a suburb of Athens in the municipality of Acharnes, East Attica, Greece.

Cropia or Kropia (Ancient Greek: Κρωπία) or Cropeia or Kropeia (Κρωπειά), also known as Cropidae or Kropidai, was a deme (or suburb/subdivision) of ancient Attica. The site of Cropia is located west of modern Ano Liosia.

Phyle (Ancient Greek: Φυλή) was a strong fortress and deme of ancient Attica, on a steep rock, commanding the narrow pass across Mount Parnes, through which runs the direct road from Thebes to Attica, past Acharnae. On the northern side of the pass was the territory of Tanagra. Phyle is situated at the distance of more than 120 stadia from Attica, not 100 stadia, as Diodorus states, and was one of the strongest Attican fortresses on the Boeotian frontier. The precipitous rock upon which it stands can only be approached by a ridge on the eastern side. It is memorable in history as the place seized by Thrasybulus and the Athenian exiles in Battle of Phyle in 404 BCE, and from which they commenced their operations against the Thirty Tyrants. The height of Phyle commanded views of the whole Attican plain, of the city itself, of Mount Hymettus, and the Saronic Gulf. In Phyle there was a building called the Daphnephoreion, containing a picture, which represented the Thargelia. The site of Phyle is located within the bounds of modern Fyli.
