Heddington

Stockley is a small village 4 km (2 mi) south of Calne in Wiltshire, England. It lies about 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) north of the larger village of Heddington, at the foot of the western extremity of the North Wessex Downs. No settlements were recorded in Domesday Book, and the area was part of the king's large Calne estate. Stockley, together with Stock to the north, anciently formed a triangle of farmland to the south of Calne town; Stockley's southern boundary was the Roman road, and the boundary with Stock is uncertain. The Wiltshire Victoria County History recounts the history of the farmsteads, most of which were along the roads at the edges of the triangle. From 1763 some of the farms were part of the Bowood estate; most of that part was sold by the Marquess of Lansdowne in 2001.Two farms lent their names to present-day hamlets: Broad's Green and Mile Elm. The village is within the civil parish of Calne Without. Wiltshire Council is the unitary authority, which is responsible for all significant local government functions. In 1841 a Primitive Methodist chapel was built at Stockley. It closed in 1966 and has since been demolished.Stockley was transferred from Calne ecclesiastical parish to Heddington in 1887; today the parish is part of the Oldbury grouping.

King's Play Hill (grid reference SU006658) is a 29.5 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Heddington, Wiltshire, notified in 1971.

Roundway Down and Covert (grid reference SU000646) is an 86 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Devizes in Wiltshire, England. It was notified in 1971. Roundway Down was the site of a battle in 1643 during the Civil War, hence the Iron Age hillfort within the site is known locally as Oliver's Castle or Oliver's Camp.

The Battle of Roundway Down was fought on 13 July 1643 near Devizes, in Wiltshire during the First English Civil War. Despite being outnumbered and exhausted after riding overnight from Oxford, a Royalist cavalry force under Lord Wilmot won a crushing victory over the Parliamentarian Army of the West under Sir William Waller. Viewed as their most decisive victory of the war, the Royalists secured control of South West England which they held until late 1645. Two weeks later they captured the port of Bristol, allowing them to establish links with supporters in Ireland.

Blackland (sometimes Blacklands) is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Calne Without, just south-east of the town of Calne, in Wiltshire, England. There is a 13th-century church and an 18th-century country house, Blackland House. In 1881 the parish had a population of 50.

Stock is a small settlement and former ecclesiastical parish, now part of Calne Without civil parish, in the ceremonial county of Wiltshire, England. It lies about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the town of Calne. Samuel Lewis said in A Topographical Dictionary of England (1848): STOCK, a tything, in the parish, union, and hundred of Calne, Chippenham and Calne, and N. divisions of Wilts; containing 328 inhabitants. It is situated on a tributary of the river Avon, and to the south of the road leading from Droitwich to Alcester. Stock was part of the Calne hundred, and its history is included in the parish history of Calne in the Wiltshire Victoria County History's Volume XVII (2002). Although Stock had open fields and common pastures, it did not have a nuclear settlement. Before the Norman Conquest of England and still in 1086 the land at Stock was almost certainly part of the royal estate of Calne. Land at Stockley lies to the south, and the boundary between Stock and Stockley is uncertain. Land at Stock had been granted away from Calne by 1144, although the area it then covered is unknown. Some of it was probably granted to Fulk de Cauntelo about 1199, and from 1763 on Stock was inherited with the manors of Calne and Calstone as part of the Bowood House estate. In 1728 Stock was divided between Hollow Ditch farm (now called Holly Ditch) and a farm now gone, with buildings near Quobbs Farm, on the west side of the road from Devizes to Calne (now the A3102). As part of the Bowood estate, the land of those two farms, and other land at Stock, totalling about 350 acres, was inherited by Charles Petty-Fitzmaurice, 9th Marquess of Lansdowne, in 1999.The Ordnance Survey map surveyed in 1884 shows a roadside hamlet named Stock Street near Stock Street Farm, and another named Mile Elm, further south along the road and near a farm of the same name which lies between Quobbs and Holly Ditch. Modern maps show only Mile Elm.

Mile Elm is a hamlet in central Wiltshire, England, with a population of around 40 residents. It lies on the A3102 road, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-west of the town of Calne. There was a farm at Mile End in 1728; the area to the east of the road was the tithing of Stock. The hamlet is within the civil parish of Calne Without. Wiltshire Council is the unitary authority which is responsible for all significant local government functions. Mile Elm backs onto part of the Marquess of Lansdowne's Bowood Estate. Larger nearby villages include Heddington, Bromham and Sandy Lane.

Devizes White Horse, officially known as the Devizes Millennium White Horse, is a chalk hill figure of a horse located on Bank Field, an escarpment at Roundway Hill, on the outskirts of the town of Devizes above the hamlet of Roundway, Wiltshire, England; it is about ½ mile north of Roundway. It was cut in 1999 to celebrate the forthcoming third millennium, and is based on a design of another white horse hill figure, which was also known as Devizes White Horse, or sometimes The Snobs Horse, which was very close to the present horse as it was also on Roundway Hill beneath the Oliver's Castle hill fort. Traces of the Snobs Horse can still be seen under the right conditions. Devizes White Horse is the eighth and latest major white horse hill figure cut in Wiltshire to be seen today, and is 45.7 metres (150 ft) long by 45 metres (148 ft) high. The horse, although sometimes viewed from a skewed angle when on nearby roads, can be seen from miles away, including from Bratton Castle on Bratton Downs, home to Westbury White Horse. It is also visible from the Vale of Pewsey, home to the Pewsey White Horse, where Devizes White Horse and Alton Barnes White Horse can be seen facing each other.

Whetham is a former manor in Calne Without parish, Wiltshire, England. No settlement remains beyond a farm, a few cottages and a country house called Whetham House.

Kingsbury Green Academy is a mixed secondary school and sixth form in Calne, Wiltshire, England for pupils aged 11 to 18. The school's present site to the south of the town was the last home of the former Bentley Grammar School, from 1957 to 1974, and the present school was called The John Bentley School when it was created as a new comprehensive in 1974. The school's name was changed to Kingsbury Green Academy in 2019, after it joined the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust.

Bentley's School, Calne, in Calne, Wiltshire, England, was a school founded in 1660 by John Bentley and closed in 1974 by Wiltshire County Council. At different times it was known as the Bentley Grammar School and Calne County School.

Quemerford is a southeastern suburb of the town of Calne in the county of Wiltshire, England. It is within both the Calne and Calne Without civil parishes, and lies on the A4 road towards Marlborough, which is some 11 miles (18 km) to the east. The River Marden flows in a westerly direction to the south of Quemerford, then turns north and passes under the A4 on its way to Calne. A tributary of the Marden, the River's Brook, passes north of Quemerford.
