The population at the 2011 census was 10,853.Historically part of Lancashire, Rainhill was a township in the ecclesiastical parish of Prescot and hundred of West Derby. Following the Local Government Act 1894, it became part of the Whiston Rural District. The Rainhill Trials of 1829 resulted in the selection of Stephenson's Rocket as the world's first modern steam locomotive.

St Nicholas Church is in Windy Arbour Road, Whiston, Merseyside, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool. The church was built in 1864–68 and designed by G. E. Street in Early English style. Its tower was never completed because of a fear of subsidence. The stained glass in the church includes windows designed by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Prescot Urban District was a local government district in the administrative county of Lancashire, England from 1895 to 1974.the main settlement of the district was the town of Prescot. In 1974 it was abolished and its former area was transferred to Merseyside to be combined with that of Huyton with Roby Urban District, Kirkby Urban District, parts of Whiston Rural District and parts of West Lancashire Rural District to form the present-day Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley.
