The building is located in the historic centre of the city, along the bank of the Douro River, and was renovated under the direction of the Pritzker-awarded architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. It is part of the Museum of Transport and Communication, founded on 21 February 1992, as a non-profit institution comprising 56 individual associates and 25 institutional associates.

The museum is located in the Alfandega Nova building (the New Customs House), dating from 1860, located beside the Douro River.The museum is focused on the history of transport and communication in Portugal and its collection comprises a diverse repertoire of cars, with a special focus on presidential vehicles. The Porto Tram Museum (Museu do Carro Eléctrico) is a museum operated by the Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto. It was inaugurated in 1992 and is installed in a former thermoelectric power station next to the River Douro in Massarelos, Porto, Portugal. It exhibits material related to the history of trams in Porto. The collection contains 16 electric cars, 5 trailers, and two maintenance vehicles as well as the former equipment of the power plant, which provided electricity for the tram lines.

Miragaia (Portuguese pronunciation: [miɾɐˈɡajɐ]) is a former civil parish in the municipality of Porto, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau e Vitória. The population in 2011 was 2,067, in an area of 0.43 km2 (0.17 square miles).Local landmarks include Santo António Hospital, the ancient city walls of Porto, built by Ferdinand I, and several palaces and churches.
