Schardam is a small village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Edam-Volendam, and lies about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) southwest of Hoorn. The village was first mentioned in 1319 as "den Scaderdam". The etymology is unclear. Schardam is a dike village which developed in the 14th century. There is a double exit sluice in Schardam. The southern sluice dates from 1592 and was renewed in 1738. The northern sluice 1712.Schardam was home to 91 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality from 1817 to 1854, when it was merged with Beets. In 2016, it became part of the municipality of Edam-Volendam.

Etersheim is a hamlet in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Edam-Volendam, and lies about 2 kilometers northeast of Oosthuizen. Etersheim was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1848, when it was merged with Oosthuizen.Etersheim is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Oosthuizen. Etersheim has place name signs. It was home to 45 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists about 25 houses.It was first mentioned in 1277 as Eitersem. The etymology is unclear. It used to be a village, but disappeared in the former Zuiderzee (nowadays: IJsselmeer). A new village was built within the dike.The old village church from 1730 was demolished in 1901, and used to construct the new church. The church was in service until 1971. In 1975, it was bought by the Church of Satan and was in service for a couple of years. It is now a residential home. The tower was partially demolished in 1984, because it was unstable.

Scharwoude is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Koggenland, and lies about 5 km southwest of Hoorn. The village was first mentioned around 1312 as Scaderwoude. The etymology is unclear. Scharwoude often experienced floods due to its proximity to the former Zuiderzee. It was flooded in 1375. The current shape of the dike and the village date from 1854. The former church dates from 1892. It was decommissioned in 1986, and is now a residential home.

Grosthuizen is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Koggenland, and lies about 7 km southwest of Hoorn. The village was first mentioned in the 12th century 1420 Asthusa, and means "big (eastern) settlement". Grost (big) was added to distinguish from Oosthuizen. Later Ast (east) was dropped from the name. Grosthuizen developed as a peat excavation settlement in the 13th century. In 1874, a church was built, but demolished in 1965. Only a belfry remains.Grosthuizen was home to 307 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1854, when it was merged with Avenhorn. In 2007, it became part of the municipality of Koggenland.

The Jewish cemetery in Hoorn can refer to the original Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of the Dutch city of Hoorn (where the first burial took place in 1762), or to a separate section of today's public cemetery. That Jewish section was opened in 1968, after the old Jewish cemetery was cleared for road construction. The history of the cemetery reflects that of the Jewish community in Hoorn, which started in the Dutch Golden Age, prospered in the 18th and 19th centuries, and declined in the 20th century, when the cemetery suffered from lack of maintenance. The Nazis ended what was left, and organizationally, the Jewish community of Hoorn merged with that of Enkhuizen. The current public cemetery of Hoorn commemorates the original cemetery, and has 219 gravestones from the original cemetery, and the remains of over 600 people.

The Oostereiland in the Dutch city of Hoorn is an artificial island built between 1662 and 1668. It was constructed from dams which were then raised and broadened. Soon after construction, homes and warehouses were built on the island, including a warehouse for the Admiralty of the Noorderkwartier.

It was constructed in the 17th century; formerly called Westereiland ("western island"), with the Oostereiland ("eastern island") across from the harbor, it created extra docking capacity and separated the Grashaven from the Zuiderzee.
