Patton, Shropshire

Patton was a hundred of Shropshire, England. Formed during Anglo-Saxon England, it encompassed manors in eastern central Shropshire, and was amalgamated during the reign of Henry I (1100 to 1135) with the neighbouring hundred of Culvestan to form the Munslow hundred. It included the upper Corvedale and the well-populated manors of Wenlock, Stoke and Ditton. The original folkmoot place, which gave its name to the hundred, was Patton, a manor recorded as being part of the hundred in the 1086 Domesday Book. Patton is written in the Domesday Book variously as Patinton(e) or Patintun(e).

Bourton is a small village in Shropshire, England, 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Much Wenlock. It is part of the civil parish of Much Wenlock. Holy Trinity Church, the parish church, is of 12th century origin, but was extended in 1844. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Presthope railway station was a station to the east of Hughley, Shropshire, England. The station was opened in 1867 and closed in 1951.

Easthope is a small village and small civil parish in Shropshire, England. Wenlock Edge passes through the parish, to the northwest of the village, along which is Easthope Wood. A hamlet with the same name (or spelled Easthopewood) is on the other side of the Edge, within the parish. Easthope gives its name to Easthope Road in the nearby town of Church Stretton, as a result of local property developer Ralph Beaumont Benson (1862–1911), who lived at Lutwyche Hall near the village. He was also responsible for the naming of Essex Road (after his wife, Caroline Essex Cholmondeley), Beaumont Road and Lutwyche Road, all in Church Stretton. He was the father of Stella Benson.

Easthope Halt railway station was a station in Easthope Wood on Wenlock Edge, Easthope, Shropshire, England. The station was opened in 1936 and closed in 1951.

Stretton Westwood is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. It is located in the parish of Much Wenlock and is two miles southwest of the town, on the B4371 road to Church Stretton; its name derives from it being on the road to Stretton. It lies near to Wenlock Edge and there are a number of quarries in the vicinity, some of which are operational whilst the rest are now disused. Westwood is the general name for the area; close by to Stretton Westwood, but on the road to Bourton rather than to Church Stretton, is the smaller hamlet of Bourton Westwood, also in Much Wenlock parish. There was once a Westwood Halt railway station, on the now closed railway line.

Hughley (grid reference SO565979) is a village and civil parish in Shropshire, England, about 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Much Wenlock. It lies in the south Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The limestone escarpment Wenlock Edge is about 1 mile (1.6 km) south-east, and the parish lies on Wenlock Shale. Hughley Brook, which runs north-east along the western edge of the village, is the parish border with Church Preen (to the west of Hughley) and Kenley (to the north).

Wenlock Edge is a limestone escarpment near Much Wenlock, Shropshire, England and a site of special scientific interest because of its geology. It is over 19 mi (31 km) long, running southwest to northeast between Craven Arms and Much Wenlock, and is roughly 1,083 feet above sea level. The deciduous woodland which runs along it covers much of the steep slopes of the escarpment and in parts it is very well preserved. It was featured on the 2005 TV programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the Midlands. Wenlock Edge contains many interesting features such as Flounders' Folly, Wilderhope Manor and Shipton Hall and waymarked walks such as the Shropshire Way and bridleways such as the Jack Mytton Way. It is a popular area for hillwalking, cycling, mountain biking and horseriding and is also frequented by tourists and sightseers. Robert Hart created a model forest garden from a small orchard on his farm called Highwood Hill in Wenlock Edge.

Stanton Long is a small village and civil parish situated in the district of Corve Dale, Shropshire, England. It is one of three parishes in the local area, including Easthope and Shipton. In the National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland 1868, it was described as: "a parish in the hundred of Munslow, county Salop, 7½ miles S.W. of Much Wenlock, its post town, and 10 W. of Bridgnorth. The village, which is small, is situated on the river Corve, and on the road from Skipton to Holdgate. The inhabitants are agricultural. The parish includes the townships of Brocton and Patton."

Shipton is a small village in Shropshire, England. The 12th-century parish church of St James is a Grade II* Listed Building. It was rebuilt in 1589 by the Lutwyche family then owning the Hall. The church figures prominently in the history of the Samuel More family of Mayflower pilgrims fame. The More family had their seat at Shipton Hall after acquiring the Hall through marriage from the Mytton family in 1795. The Hall is constructed of limestone to an E-plan. In the ornamental gardens are stables and an early monastic dovecote, which is a Grade II* listed building.

Shipton Hall is a large Elizabethan country house in the village of Shipton, Shropshire, England, which lies in the Corvedale valley some 7 miles south-west of Much Wenlock. It is a Grade I listed building.The hall is constructed of limestone to an E-plan in two storeys with attics, and boasts a slender 4-storey tower in one of the internal corners. In the ornamental gardens are stables and an early monastic dovecote, which is a Grade II* listed building.Close by stands the 12th century Church of St James.

Westwood Halt railway station was a station in Stretton Westwood, Shropshire, England. The station was opened on 7 December 1935 and closed to passengers in 1951.
