Brookfield, Washington

Harlows Creek is a stream in Wahkiakum County in the U.S. state of Washington. The name of the stream used to be Jim Crow Creek until it was changed by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names effective May 10, 2017 as part of an nationwide effort to remove offensive and/or derogatory names from geographic features. The new name commemorates John (1872-1953) and Mary (1888-1963) Harlow, who lived in the area during the 1870s. The origin of the name Jim Crow Creek was a reference to James D. Saules, a free black sailor who travelled widely throughout the Pacific in the 1800s. He was part of the United States Exploring Expedition. After the Cockstock incident along the lower Columbia River four nearby places where named "Jim Crow" due to Saules's involvement: Jim Crow Creek (Harlows Creek), Jim Crow Hill (now Beare Hill), Jim Crow Point (now Brookfield Point), and Jim Crow Sands. The incident also contributed to the Provisional Government of Oregon enacting the Oregon black exclusion laws. All three "Jim Crow" places names in Washington were renamed in 2017 due to the efforts of Washington Senator Pramila Jayapal. Jim Crow Sands, in the Columbia River, is in Oregon and has not been renamed as of 2023. Harlows Creek originates high on the slopes of Elk Mountain and flows south to the Columbia River, entering the river just east of the historical community of Brookfield, about 13 mi (21 km) east of Astoria, Oregon. Harlows Creek has one named tributary, Fink Creek. An early 20th century work suggested the point was named for crows that nested there. However, this reference also suggests a tree growing on the point could be seen far out at sea, an idea which should not be taken seriously due to distance as well as geographic features, so the reference itself might have little value.

For the mountain and rock in the English Lake District, search under Pillar (Lake District) Pillar Rock is a pillar-like monolith in the Columbia River, near its mouth in the state of Washington. Originally rising 75-100 feet, it was dynamited and reduced in height to about 25 feet above the water to serve as a navigational aid and light. The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped twice near the rock, on November 7 and November 25, 1805. The name "Pillar Rock" also refers to a small village on the river's north shore, opposite the rock. As recently as 1851, the village was home to a small group of the Kathlamet band of Chinook Indians under the headship of a man named Tolillicum.

Brownsmead is an unincorporated community, on a distributary of the Columbia River called Saspal Slough, in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. Previously known as Brody, it was named after W.G. Brown, a Portland engineer involved in land reclamation in the area. There was a post office in Brownsmead from 1919 to 1975, located in the Brownsmead General Store. Historic photos of the Brownsmead fish station, located where Davis Creek feeds into Blind Slough, reveal docked gillnetting boats. One such boat is shown in the boat hoist, resting above the water by several feet on the dock. Brownsmead is the northernmost settlement in the state of Oregon.

Altoona is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wahkiakum County, Washington, approximately 27 miles northwest of the town of Cathlamet. The population was 39 as of the 2010 census. The CDP includes the communities of Carlson Landing and Dahlia.

Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge, near the mouth of the Columbia River, provides wintering and resting areas for an estimated 1,000 tundra swans, 5,000 geese, and 30,000 ducks. Other species include shorebirds and bald eagles. Estuary waters provide vital food resources for juvenile salmon as they pause to become acclimated to salt water before entering the Pacific Ocean. Bald eagles are present year-round; there are 30 to 35 active nest sites. Other fish species using the estuary include American shad, smelt, perch, starry flounder, bass, catfish, and Pacific lamprey. Harbor seals use sandbars and mud flats as resting sites at low tides, while seals and California sea lions feed on fish in the estuary. Beaver, raccoon, weasel, mink, muskrat, river otter, Columbian white-tailed deer and invasive nutria also live on the islands.

Knappa is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located on the south bank of the Columbia River in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States, approximately 12 miles (19 km) directly east of Astoria. Knappa faces the Columbia River, where several islands comprise the Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge. The community is named after Aaron Knapp Jr., an early settler. There was a post office in Knappa from 1872 to 1943. Logging and fishing are the primary economic activities in Knappa. Knappa School District comprises Hilda Lahti Elementary School and Knappa High School.

Rosburg is a Census-designated place (CDP) in Wahkiakum County, Washington, United States. Rosburg is located on the Grays River near Washington State Route 4, 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Cathlamet. Rosburg has a post office with ZIP code 98643. The CDP includes the communities of Eden and Oneida. Christian Rosburg, the town's first postmaster, named Rosburg for himself.

Tenasillahe Island is an island in the Columbia River Estuary portion of the Columbia River in Clatsop County, Oregon. It is separated from the mainland and the unincorporated community of Clifton, Oregon by the Clifton Channel, and from nearby Welch Island by the Red Slough.The island was visited by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and Tenasillahe and Welch were known as the "Marshy Islands". The entire island is part of the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer.

Clifton is an unincorporated community in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. It is located north of U.S. Route 30, about nine miles northwest of Westport on the south bank of the Columbia River. It is on Clifton Channel across from Tenasillahe Island.

Knappa High School is a public high school near Knappa, Oregon, United States. The school is located on Old Highway 30, 12 miles east of Astoria and 90 miles from Portland, between Svensen and Knappa. The Knappa School District serves the unincorporated communities of Knappa, Svensen, Burnside and Brownsmead. Knappa High School's first class graduated in 1919. The Knappa school district has won baseball championship in 2009, 2015, 2016, and in 2017.

Bradwood Landing was a proposed terminal for receiving liquefied natural gas (LNG) and converting the liquid back into a gas for transport via pipeline in the U.S. state of Oregon. The site of the development, which declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2010 May, was on the Columbia River, east of Astoria.

Grays River is a tributary of the Columbia River, approximately 30 miles (48 km) long, in southwestern Washington in the United States. One of the last tributaries of the Columbia on the Washington side, it drains an area of low hills north of the mouth of the river.
