Herten

Herten Castle (German: Schloss Herten) is a moated castle situated in the town of Herten in the administrative district of Recklinghausen in the state of North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. It is located within an old English landscape garden and its first mentioning dates back to 1376. In 1962, the main castle building was declared a cultural heritage monument. While foundations of today's main castle building incorporate elements from the 14th-century building, the buildings visible today were built in the 16th and 17th century by Coesfeld architect Henric de Suer and his son Johann. They were built for the families Stecke and Nesselrode. After the First World War, the main castle building was no longer used as a residence and started to deteriorate. Subsidence caused by the widespread sub-surface mining in the surrounding industrial Ruhr area added to the structural damage, bringing the castle buildings close to collapse. Only radical restoration measures taken by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe (German: Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe) from 1974 to 1989 saved the late Gothic castle complex from total decline. Today it is used as a venue for concerts, cultural events and festivities. It also houses a café. The castle's park is popular for walking, picknicking, jogging and biking.

The Ewald Colliery (German: Zeche Ewald) is a disused coal mine in Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Established in 1872, it was one of several major mining sites in the heavily-industrialized Ruhr district in northwestern Germany during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The site eventually ceased operations as a mine in 2001 and has since been converted to commercial space.

Recklinghausen (German pronunciation: [ˌʁɛklɪŋˈhaʊzn̩] (listen); Westphalian: Riäkelhusen) is the northernmost city in the Ruhr-Area and the capital of the Recklinghausen district. It borders the rural Münsterland and is characterized by large fields and farms in the north and industry in the south. Recklinghausen is the 60th-largest city in Germany and the 22nd-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Holzbach is a small river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Emscher near Gelsenkirchen.

ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen, founded on April 14, 1949, as "Ruhr-Zoo", is one of the most modern zoological gardens in Germany. It was founded on a heavily shelled area in Gelsenkirchen adjacent to a port on the Rhine–Herne Canal. It initially encompassed 15.5 hectares. During its first years, there was a large turnover of animals as an animal trader provided them. Today the park is owned by the city of Gelsenkirchen via GEW – Gesellschaft für Energie und Wirtschaft mbH (society for energy and business), a holding of municipally owned concerns. After 2004 the park was enlarged to the present size. It is incredibly well known for its panoramas and cultural approach. The main attractions are big animals, mostly mammals; the zoo has no aquarium house, insectarium or other facilities for smaller animals. The numbers before 2005 reflect average visitor numbers for the old Ruhr-Zoo.

Jahnstadion is a former multi-use stadium in Marl, Germany. It was used as the stadium of TSV Marl-Hüls association football matches. The capacity of the stadium is 25,000 spectators. It has been used exclusively for baseball since 2008. The former main grandstand is now adjacent to left field, with home plate situated near the former opposite grandstand and the farthest point from home plate in fair territory being in right center field.

The Cranger Kirmes is a funfair in Germany, located near the Rhine–Herne Canal in Crange in the city of Herne located in Metro Ruhr. It is the biggest funfair in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the second biggest fair in Germany, only behind the Munich Oktoberfest. In 2008 there were 4.7 million visitors. At an area of only 110,000 square metres (1,200,000 sq ft) and 500 show businesses it is called the "most overcrowded fair of the world". The fair is held annually for a period of 10 days from the first Friday in August. Visitor attractions include Ferris wheels, carousels, roller coasters, ghost trains, carnival games, food stalls, raffles and beer halls and gardens. On opening and closing day a fireworks show is presented.

Marl Mitte is a railway station on the Gelsenkirchen-Buer Nord–Marl Lippe railway (a single-track electrified line built in 1968) in Marl in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 6 station and was opened on 24 October 1974.The attached Marl Mitte (S) bus station is one of the central connecting points in the bus network of the Vestische Straßenbahnen. The Marler Stern shopping centre is also in the immediate vicinity of the halt. Access is via a pedestrian bridge with a lift connecting to the Marler Stern as well as via a level access to the east. It is served by Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn line S 9 at hourly intervals (Haltern am See - Marl-Hamm - Marl-Mitte - Gelsenkirchen-Buer Nord - Gladbeck-West - Bottrop -Essen Hbf - Velbert - Wuppertal) . It is also served by bus routes 221 (Brassert – Marl Mitte, at 60-minute intervals), 222 (Sinsen – Recklinghausen + Polsum – Hassel – Buer, at 30-minute intervals), 223 (Chemiepark – Sinsen – Wacholderstr, at 30-minute intervals), 225 (Hüls – Hamm – Waldsiedlung, at 30-minute intervals), 238 (Drewer Süd – Hüls Süd – Recklinghausen, at 30-minute intervals), 242 (Sickingmühle – Haltern/Mersch, at 30-minute intervals), 270 (RE Hbf + Brassert – Hervest – Dorsten, at 30-minute intervals), SB26 (Barkenberg – Wulfen + Sinsen – Oer-Erkenschwick, at 30- to 60-minute intervals) and SB27 (Langenbochum – Herten – Wanne-Eickel, at 30-minute intervals), SB25 (Dorsten + Recklinghausen, at 30-minute intervals) and taxibus service 229 (Hagenstr – Blumensiedlung at 60-minute intervals), all operated by Vestische Straßenbahnen.

Gelsenkirchen-Hassel is a railway station on the Gelsenkirchen-Buer Nord–Marl Lippe railway in Gelsenkirchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 6 station. It was opened on 27 September 1968. It has a platform on the west side of the track. It can be reached via stairs and a ramp. It is served by Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn line S 9 at 60-minute intervals. Haltern am See, Marl, Gladbeck, Bottrop, Essen, Wuppertal It is also served by bus route 243 (Buer + Bertlich – Westerholt – Herten, at 60-minute intervals) and taxibus service 240 (to Polsum at 60-minute intervals).

Marl (German: [maʁl] ) is a town and a municipality in the district of Recklinghausen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated near the Wesel-Datteln Canal, approx. 10 km north-west of Recklinghausen. It has about 90,000 people.

Westerholt Power Station was a coal fired power station in Gelsenkirchen-Westerholt, Germany. The power plant consisted of two units built in the 1960s, each capable of producing 150 MW of electricity. Its smokestack, built in 1981, was 337 metres (1106 feet) tall, making it Germany's tallest chimney at the time. The power station was decommissioned on May 13, 2005, and the chimney demolished on Sunday, December 3, 2006, at 10:53 a.m. It remains the tallest freestanding structure of any type to ever be demolished in a controlled manner. The only taller structures to ever be demolished in any manner(uncontrolled) being the two towers of the World Trade Center. It was the tallest structure in North Rhine-Westphalia. Before its erection the 320.8 m tall Wesel transmitter tower took this claim. After the demolition of the chimney, the Wesel tower once again became the tallest structure in North Rhine-Westphalia. A district heating plant, "FWK Westerholt", has been in operation on this site since the spring of 2004. There are six boilers there to provide heat for the district heating network of the northern Ruhr Area. The Westerholt coal mine is located only a few hundred metres away. Both the power plant and the mine are on the city limits of Gelsenkirchen in the Hassel neighborhood and were named for the contiguous (and at that time still independent) city of Westerholt in what was then the district of Recklinghausen (today the city is a part of the city of Herten and is named "Herten-Westerholt").
