The Bergen-Hohne Training Area (German: NATO-Truppenübungsplatz Bergen or Schießplatz Bergen-Hohne) is a NATO military training area in the southern part of the Lüneburg Heath, in the state of Lower Saxony in northern Germany. It covers an area of 284 square kilometres (70,000 acres), which makes it the largest military training area in Germany. It was established by the German armed forces, the Wehrmacht, in 1935. At the end of the Second World War it was taken over by British occupying forces and some of its facilities used as a liberation camp for survivors of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, which was located on the edge of the training area near the town of Bergen. Under British control, the training area was steadily expanded and, since the 1960s, has also been used by the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) and other NATO troops.

Lohheide is an unincorporated area in the district of Celle, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It covers an area of 91.32 square kilometres (35.26 sq mi) and has 764 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2006). Together with administrative area of Osterheide it is part of the Bergen-Hohne Military Training Area.

Benhorn was a village in the old district of Fallingbostel, on the Heidmark in Lower Saxony in North Germany. It disappeared from the map in 1935/36, because the German Wehrmacht wanted to establish the Bergen-Hohne Training Area, today the largest military training area in Germany. The inhabitants were resettled.

Hartem was a village in the Heidmark, an area within the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony, Germany. In 1935/1936 Hartem disappeared from the map. The German armed forces, the Wehrmacht established a military training area (today the largest of its kind in Europe, the Bergen-Hohne Training Area). Its inhabitants were resettled.

Ostenholz Moor (German: Ostenholzer Moor) is a raised bog on the Lüneburg Heath in the German state of Lower Saxony. It is named after the village of Ostenholz and is not far from Meißendorf. The bog is almost entirely within the Bergen-Hohne Military Training Area and, as a result, has been largely left to develop naturally. The River Meiße separates Ostenholz Moor from the nature and bird reserve of the Meißendorf Lakes and Bannetzer Moor. The bog's landscape largely forms a natural boundary for the actual nature reserve which has been purchased by Celle district. The Meißendorf Lakes, formerly a network of ponds for fish-farming, are today the most important migration and breeding ground for numerous marsh and water birds. Around 250 species of bird may be seen here, including the crane, the black stork and the osprey.

The Falkenberg (German pronunciation: [ˈfalkŋ̍ˌbɛʁk] ) lies in the northwestern part of the district of Celle in northern Germany. It is one of the highest points on the Lüneburg Heath. In good weather Hanover is visible from its summit. It is on the terrain of the NATO facility, the Bergen-Hohne Training Area, in the vicinity of the village of Becklingen. In 1820 King George IV the United Kingdom tasked the Professor of Astronomy and Director of the Observatory at Göttingen University, Carl Friedrich Gauss, to survey the Kingdom of Hanover. Gauss used the summit of Falkenberg, amongst others, as a triangulation station for his land surveys. Another central trig point was the Falkenberg (150 m über NN) which lay further south.The Wilseder Berg (169 m above NN), further north, was another central trig point as was the Haußelberg to the east. The trig points of Haußelberg and Falkenberg, which today are hidden by woods, then lay on open, unforested hilltops, probably surrounded by heath. Not until the large systematic afforestation in the 2nd half of the 19th century did the landscape begin to look like it does today. Part of the triangulation network used for Gauß's survey, depicting the Falkenberg, was represented on the reverse side of the 4th series of 10 Deutschmark banknotes.

Osterheide is an unincorporated area in the district of Heidekreis, in Lower Saxony, Germany. The 177.99 square kilometres (68.72 sq mi) area has 2,463 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2020). Its administrative seat is the village of Oerbke; other villages are Ostenholz and Wense. The districts of Osterheide and Lohheide cover the Bergen-Hohne Military Training Area.

Oerbke is an unincorporated German village in Soltau-Fallingbostel district in the southern part of the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony. Oerbke lies on the A7 autobahn east of Bad Fallingbostel and is the seat of administration for the Osterheide area.

Pröbsten was a village in the former district (Altkreis) of Fallingbostel, located in the Heidmark in the German state of Lower Saxony. Its inhabitants were resettled in 1935/36, because the German Wehrmacht wanted to establish a major military training area, the Truppenübungsplatz Bergen on the heathland and forest of the Heidmark.

The Meißendorf Lakes and Bannetze Moor (German: Meißendorfer Teiche mit dem Bannetzer Moor) are a nature reserve and bird reserve of national importance on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath in the state of Lower Saxony in northern Germany. The special importance of this nature reserve is underlined by its recognition as a major federal nature reserve project. The area derives its name from the nearby villages of Meißendorf and Bannetze. The lakes were formerly a network of ponds established for fish-farming.

Ettenbostel was a village in the old district (Altkreis) of Fallingbostel located in the Heidmark in the north German state of Lower Saxony. The villagers were 'relocated' in 1935/36 because the German Wehrmacht wanted to create a huge military training area on the heathland and forest of the Heidmark. Today this has become the Bergen-Hohne Training Area and is the largest in Europe.

Vierde is a village within the borough of Bad Fallingbostel in Soltau-Fallingbostel district in the Heidmark (southern part of the Lüneburg Heath in the state of Lower Saxony, Northern Germany).
