Elderberry Forebay

Elderberry Forebay Dam is a dam located in the Sierra Pelona Mountains of northwestern Los Angeles County, California. The dam partitions Elderberry Forebay from Castaic Lake. It forms the headwater reservoir for Castaic Power Plant, a pumped-storage hydroelectricity generation facility. The dam was completed in 1974 as part of the California State Water Project.

Castaic Power Plant, also known as the Castaic Pumped-Storage Plant, is a seven unit pumped-storage hydroelectric plant, operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, which provides peak load power from the falling water on the West Branch of the California State Aqueduct. It is a cooperative venture between the LADWP and the Department of Water Resources of the State of California. An agreement between the two organizations was signed on September 2, 1966, for construction of the project.

The Angeles Tunnel is a 7.2-mile-long (11.6 km), 30-foot-diameter (9.1 m) water tunnel located in the Sierra Pelona Mountains in Los Angeles County, California, about 50 miles (80 km) north of Los Angeles. It was constructed between 1967 and 1970 as part of the California State Water Project and serves as the final leg of the west branch of the California Aqueduct, which carries Northern California water to Southern California residents.The tunnel also supplies water to the adjacent Castaic Power Plant, a pumped-storage hydroelectricity generation facility. To facilitate power generation, the tunnel's flow is bidirectional. During on-peak energy-demand hours, water flows downhill through the tunnel, starting at an elevation of 2,572 feet (784 m) in Pyramid Lake, and then falling over 1,000 feet (300 m) to the turbines of the Castaic Power Plant at 1,519 feet (463 m). The water is then stored in the Elderberry Forebay, adjacent to Castaic Lake. During off-peak hours, water is pumped uphill through the tunnel in the opposite direction from Elderberry Forebay and returned to Pyramid Lake. This operation reduces the energy cost of moving water along the California Aqueduct.

The Route Fire was a wildfire that burned during the 2022 California wildfire season, along Interstate 5 near the community of Castaic in Los Angeles County, California during a dramatic state-wide heatwave in late August and early September, 2022. At least seven firefighters sustained heat-related injuries, while two structures were destroyed and 5,208 acres (2,108 ha) burned.

Castaic Lake (Chumash: Kaštiq) is a reservoir formed by Castaic Dam on Castaic Creek, in the Sierra Pelona Mountains of northwestern Los Angeles County, California, United States, near the town of Castaic. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment has issued a safety advisory for any fish caught in Castaic Lake and Castaic Lagoon due to elevated levels of mercury and PCBs.

Castaic Dam is an embankment dam in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, in the unincorporated area of Castaic. Although located on Castaic Creek, a major tributary of the Santa Clara River, Castaic Creek provides little of its water. The lake is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, part of the State Water Project. The dam was built by the California Department of Water Resources and construction was completed in 1973. The lake has a capacity of 325,000 acre-feet (401,000,000 m3) and stores drinking water for the western portion of the Greater Los Angeles Area.

As of the 2010 census it had a population of 19,015. For statistical purposes the Census Bureau has defined Castaic as a census-designated place (CDP).Tens of thousands of motorists pass through Castaic daily as they drive to or from Los Angeles on Interstate 5 (the Golden State Freeway). Castaic Lake is part of the California Water Project and is the site of a hydro-electric power plant. Castaic is 38 miles (61 km) northwest of Los Angeles Union Station and northwest of the city of Santa Clarita. The Castaic Range War went on for decades in the late 19th and early 20th centuries resulting in dozens of deaths before hostilities ceased in 1916.

Hasley Canyon is a census-designated place in the Sierra Pelona mountains of Los Angeles County, California. Hasley Canyon sits at an elevation of 1,765 feet (538 m). The 2010 United States census reported Hasley Canyon's population was 1,137.

99 Oaks is an archaic placename of the Santa Clarita Valley, Los Angeles County, California in the United States. The location was mainly a rest stop between Castaic and Castaic Junction in what was then a fairly remote location along Old Highway 99. Otis and Macy Andrews opened the 99 Oaks Café in 1936. Circa 1950, 99 Oaks had a service station and a café. The name 99 Oaks was later used for buildings nearby, such as 99 Oaks Auto Court in Mint Canyon, 99 Oaks Cabins in Castaic, and the 99 Oaks Car Lot in Newhall. What little there was of 99 Oaks "mostly disappeared" when Route 99 was replaced by Interstate 5 in 1968.

San Francisquito Canyon is a canyon created through erosion of the Sierra Pelona Mountains by the San Francisquito Creek, in Los Angeles County, Southern California.

Rancho Temescal was a 13,339-acre (53.98 km2) Mexican land grant in present-day Ventura County and Los Angeles County, California given in 1843 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to Francisco Lopez and José Arellanes. The word “temescal” is Spanish for "sweat bath" or "sweat lodge", deriving from the Nahuatl “temazcalli”. The grant was located in the upper end of the Santa Clara Valley, in the eastern section of Ventura County, in the upper Santa Clara River Valley near the base of the Topatopa Mountains where Piru Creek and the Santa Clara River meet. The grant encompassed present-day Lake Piru and town of Piru.
