San Francisquito Canyon

The St. Francis Dam was a concrete gravity dam located in San Francisquito Canyon in northern Los Angeles County, California that was built between 1924 and 1926 to serve the city of Los Angeles's growing water needs. It failed catastrophically in 1928 due to a defective soil foundation and design flaws, unleashing a flood that claimed the lives of at least 431 people. The collapse of the dam is considered to have been one of the worst American civil engineering disasters of the 20th century, and remains the 3rd-greatest loss of life in California's history, exceeded only by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire and the Great Flood of 1862.The St. Francis Dam was built to create a large regulating and storage reservoir that was an integral part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. It was located in San Francisquito Canyon of the Sierra Pelona Mountains, about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, and approximately 10 miles (16 km) north of the present day city of Santa Clarita, California. The dam was designed and built by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, then named the Bureau of Water Works and Supply. The department was under the direction of its general manager and chief engineer, William Mulholland. The disaster ended Mulholland's career.

The 2002 Copper Fire was a wildfire in the U.S. state of California's Los Angeles County. After igniting on June 5 near the city of Santa Clarita, the fire burned for a week and consumed 23,407 acres (9,472 hectares), damaging wildlife habitat and historic structures in the Angeles National Forest before it was fully contained on June 12. The fire destroyed more than two dozen buildings and resulted in at least eight firefighter injuries. The government eventually sued two contractors whose equipment and negligence it argued had sparked the fire during construction work, resulting in a jury award in its favor of over $36 million.

Castaic Dam is an embankment dam in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, in the unincorporated area of Castaic. Although located on Castaic Creek, a major tributary of the Santa Clara River, Castaic Creek provides little of its water. The lake is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, part of the State Water Project. The dam was built by the California Department of Water Resources and construction was completed in 1973. The lake has a capacity of 325,000 acre-feet (401,000,000 m3) and stores drinking water for the western portion of the Greater Los Angeles Area.

Camp Joseph Scott is one of the 18 juvenile camps in Los Angeles County. The camp is located in Santa Clarita, California in the Santa Clarita Valley of Los Angeles County. It neighbors Camp Kenyon Scudder. Camp Scott is a camp for female inmates with a charter school education system supervised by the Los Angeles Unified School District.The charter system was voted by Los Angeles education supervisors in 2008, when Camp Scott had about 100 female inmates. Camp Joseph Scott was the first facility in the county camp system to establish a charter school education.

It is dedicated exclusively to the small Asian ape, the gibbon, and houses the most varied group of gibbons in the Western Hemisphere, including representatives of all 4 genera and 5 of the existing 19 species.
