Dacre Bears

St Andrew's Church is in the village of Dacre, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Penrith, the archdeaconry of Penrith, and the diocese of Carlisle. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The church stands near Dacre Castle.

Dacre Castle is a moated tower house in the village of Dacre, 4 miles (6.4 km) south-west of Penrith, Cumbria, England. It was constructed in the mid-14th century, probably by Margaret Multon, against the background of the threat of Scottish invasion and raids, and was held in the Dacre family until the 17th century. The tower house is 66 feet (20 m) tall, built out of local sandstone, topped by crenellations, with four turrets protruding from a central block, and includes an ornate lavabo in the main hall. Renovated during the 1670s and 1960s after periods of disrepair, the castle is now used as a private home.

Dacre (English: ) is a small village, civil parish and electoral ward in the Lake District National Park in the Eden District of Cumbria, England, and historically in Cumberland. In the 2001 census, the parish, which includes Newbiggin and Stainton, had a population of 1,326, increasing to 1,438 at the 2011 Census.Dacre is situated about 5 miles (8 km) west of Penrith and contains St Andrew's Parish Church, an ancient castle, and the Horse & Farrier pub. Nearby is the small stately home of Dalemain. Dacre Beck is a major tributary of the River Eamont. Although Dacre is a small place in itself, its civil parish is quite large and includes the villages and hamlets of Stainton, Redhills, Newbiggin, Great Blencow and Soulby. Stainton is by far the largest place in the parish and is a dormitory village of Penrith. Redhills is home to a Burger King restaurant, the Penrith Golf Driving Range, a business park, The Limes Country Hotel and the Rheged Discovery Centre.

Soulby is a hamlet in the civil parish of Dacre, near the villages of Dacre and Pooley Bridge and the A592 road, in the Eden district, in the English county of Cumbria. In the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 it had a population of 66. The name "Soulby" means "village near the fork or joining of two rivers".

The Penrith Hoard is a dispersed hoard of 10th century silver penannular brooches found at Flusco Pike, Newbiggin Moor, near Penrith in Cumbria, and now in the British Museum in London. The largest "thistle brooch" was discovered in 1785 and another in 1830, with the bulk of items being recovered in two groups close to each other by archaeologists in 1989. Whether all the finds made close to each other were originally deposited at the same time remains uncertain, but it is thought likely that at least the brooches were. The brooches are thought to have been deposited in about 930.

Dunmallet or Dunmallard Hill is a small hill in the English Lake District, near Pooley Bridge, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 775 feet (236 m) and Wainwright describes the ascent, from Pooley Bridge, as a "simple after-dinner stroll". He lists two other early spellings: Dunmalloght and Dunmallock The hill is wooded and the views from the top limited.Remains of an Iron Age hill fort have been detected on the hill.

Pooley Bridge was an historic stone road bridge that crossed the River Eamont in the village of Pooley Bridge near the northern end of Ullswater. It connected two civil parishes, Barton and Pooley Bridge and Dacre, and was grade II listed in January 1991.The bridge, erected in 1764 and replacing an earlier bridge from the 16th century, was washed away on 6 December 2015 when Cumbria was hit by heavy flooding during Storm Desmond, after storm waters eroded the riverbed around the base of the bridge supports.A parapet stone was inscribed "JS & IR 1764".

Dalemain is a country house around 5 miles south-west of Penrith in Cumbria, England. It is a Grade I listed building. Dalemain is part of the Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pooley Bridge is a village in the Eden District of the northwestern English county of Cumbria, within the traditional borders of Westmorland. The village takes its name from a bridge over the River Eamont at the northern end of Ullswater. The bridge, erected in 1764 and replacing an earlier bridge from the 16th century, collapsed on 6 December 2015 when Cumbria was hit by heavy flooding as a result of Storm Desmond. A temporary replacement bridge was opened on 20 March 2016. A new stainless steel bridge was lifted into place in May 2020, and opened in October 2020.There is a pier from which ferries (known as the Ullswater 'Steamers') provide connections to Glenridding and Howtown. Pooley Bridge was formerly known as Pooley or Pool How meaning the hill by the pool or stream. The name Pool How was derived from the Old English word pollr plus the Old Norse haugr meaning hill or mound.Pooley is mostly situated in the civil parish of Barton and Pooley Bridge, of which it is the main settlement. The few houses on the northern or Cumberland side of the bridge are in Dacre parish. The village is popular with tourists, especially during the summer, and has several hotels, guest houses and camping sites.

The Ullswater Way is a 20-mile (32 km) waymarked walking route around Ullswater in the English Lake District. It was created by a partnership which included The Lake District National Park Authority, the National Trust, Eden District Council, and Ullswater 'Steamers' and was opened on 25 April 2016 by broadcaster and film-maker Eric Robson. The idea of a path circumnavigating the lake had been considered for many years, but the 2015 Cumbria floods which devastated the area gave an incentive for the completion of the project.The path is recognised by the Long Distance Walkers Association.The path's symbol, used for waymarking, has a picture of a daffodil; it was on the shore of Ullswater that William Wordsworth saw the flowers which inspired his well-known poem "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud", often known simply as "Daffodils".

Newbiggin is a small village in Cumbria, North West England. It is in the Dacre civil parish about 3 mi (4.8 km) west of Penrith. It lies at 750 ft (230 m) sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly wind by Flusco Pike, 150 ft (46 m) higher. It is described as a "non-nucleated village," lying for a mile along either side of the C3019 between the A66 and the B5288. There are at least six other villages in Cumbria with the same name, which is derived from the Old English ‘new biggin', or new house. Locally this village is referred to as the "Stainton Newbiggin," to distinguish it from the others.

Dacre Beck is a small river in Cumbria, England.Dacre Beck rises on the north side of Gowbarrow Fell and flows north past Ulcat Row, picking up streams from Lowthwaite and Matterdale End, traversing a valley between Great Mell Fell and Little Mell Fell, before changing its course to eastward at Thackthwaite. The beck collects more streams at Hutton, one of which comes south from Berrier past Beckces, near to Penruddock. From here, Dacre Beck flows past the ancient settlement of Dacre. The beck is a tributary of the River Eamont, which it joins at Dalemain near Stainton. Dacre Beck is a Celtic river name meaning the trickling one.
