Mapplewell is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, England. Formerly part of the now defunct Barnsley West and Penistone borough constituency, following the Boundary Commission for England's report on South Yorkshire's Parliamentary constituencies in 2004 and the subsequent inquiry in 2005, it is now part of the Barnsley Central borough constituency. The village currently falls within the Barnsley MBC ward of Darton East.

There is a primary school, Gawber Primary School, a preschool, Gawber Pre-School, and a church, St Thomas.The origin of the place-name is from the Old English words galga and beorg meaning gallows hill and appears as Galgbergh in 1304.In A Topographical Dictionary of England (1848) Gawber is noted for its collieries. The North Gawber Colliery which closed in 1988 was located to the north in Mapplewell and the East Gawber Hall Colliery, of which the buried remains of the colliery fanhouse are a scheduled monument, was to the north-east of Gawber.

Barugh is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Barnsley Metropolitan ward of Darton West. Until 1974 it was in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Staincross and Mapplewell railway station was one of three stations built on the Barnsley Coal Railway and opened when that line was completed in 1882. The station was situated adjacent to the main Wakefield road (A61), slightly to the east of Staincross, on the edge of the present day Athersley estate. It was about 1 mile east of Mapplewell. The station was situated between Stairfoot and Notton and Royston. The railway arrived in the area with the opening of the first section of the Barnsley Coal Railway but the stations were opened, with the completion of the line on 1 September 1882. Staincross and Mapplewell consisted of two flanking platforms with access from the road bridge. The station was closed on 22 September 1930. It is referred to as Staincross for Mapplewell in the July 1922 issue of Bradshaw's Railway Guide.

Summer Lane railway station was a railway station on the Barnsley to Penistone line situated some 1 mile 16 chains (1.9 km) from Barnsley Exchange, South Yorkshire, England. The station was opened in 1854 by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and was closed between December 1859 and February 1867 when it was reopened.It was finally closed by British Railways on 29 June 1959 when the local passenger services were withdrawn from other stations on the lines in the area such as Barnsley Court House, Silkstone and Dodworth. In 1928 it was connected to a corn mill and jam factory.

Originally used as landfill site for domestic waste, the land that is now known as Penny Pie Park is a large recreational playing field, open to the public .Now there is a large gyratory in most of the park. It is located in Pogmoor, Barnsley and is owned by the local council. The park is approximately 350 metres by 250 metres in size and is bordered by various vegetation, including sycamore, willow and horsechestnut trees. A railway separates its northern edge from another council field which is situated opposite. It contains multipurpose sports facilities and personal training fitness stations, as well as a vast area of green space, popular with runners and dog walkers. It is often used as a site for pigeon fanciers to race pigeons, and as a landing site for hot air balloons and air ambulances.
