Holgate School was a state school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was closed in 2012, when it was merged with The Kingstone School to form Horizon Community College. After Holgate closed, it was demolished and the site was turned into a car park for Horizon Community College.

Shaw Lane is a cricket ground in Barnsley. It hosted one first-class match, in August 1862 between Yorkshire and an All England XI, a game won by the England XI despite being bowled out for just 47 in their first innings. More recently, it hosted four Benson and Hedges Cup one day matches featuring Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1975 and 1978. Yorkshire beat Nottinghamshire CCC in 1975 but suffered one of their worst defeats when they lost by seven wickets to the Combined Universities the following year. The combined team did feature such future test players as Paul Parker, Vic Marks and Chris Tavare as well as Peter Roebuck. Yorkshire beat Essex CCC there in 1977 then lost to Surrey CCC by just one wicket in the last list A game held at the venue. In 2010, it was the location for a Women's ODI, the 4th ODI between England Women and New Zealand Women, which England Women won by 9 wickets.It has also hosted several Second XI and Minor Counties matches, and matches in the Yorkshire Premier League. It is the home of Barnsley Cricket Club, for whom such players as Geoff Boycott, Dickie Bird and chat show host Michael Parkinson opened the batting. It is one of twelve grounds in the initial 'Chance to Shine' scheme for grassroots cricket. It has been known as Shaw Lane since 1863 but before then was known as the Clarence Ground.

Built in 1400, the church is located on Church Lane and is directly next to the college and town hall. The church is used for hosting religious services and Barnsley College use it for music performances and events. The church is the main parish church in Barnsley and local suburbs.

Holy Rood Church is a Roman Catholic Parish Church in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was opened in 1905. It is situated on the corner of Castlereagh Street and George Street, next to West Way in the town centre. It was designed by Edward Simpson and is a Grade II listed building.

Wilthorpe is an area of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. Bisected by the A635 Huddersfield Road, Wilthorpe has several small shops and an infant school, as well as an ATS garage and a dentist. Wilthorpe sits in the S75 area of Barnsley, along with the neighbouring districts of Pogmoor, Gawber, and Mapplewell. The village is popular among young professionals who commute to the cities of Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester.

Barnsley College is a further education college just outside the town centre of Barnsley, England. It has several campuses, including the SciTech Digital Innovation Centre and The Electric Theatre. The college provides A Levels, apprenticeships and vocational courses for students. Upon its last Ofsted inspection, the college was awarded the grade of Outstanding, the highest grade available; further to this award the college was also deemed The best college in the UK by Ofsted officials.

Hope House School (HHS, formerly Barnsley Christian School) was a 4–16 mixed, Christian, private school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was established in 1985 and closed on 27 April 2018. It was part of the Hope House Church.

Kingstone is a small residential neighbourhood in Barnsley, located on the south-western side of Barnsley between Broadway and Park Road. Barnsley Central fire station and the recently demolished The Kingstone School are both located in the Kingstone area. The local St Edward the Confessor's church, built between 1900 and 1902 in the Gothic revival style, is a Grade II listed building.

The Barnsley and District Electric Traction Co was an electric tramway network serving the town of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The tramway was a subsidiary of the British Electric Traction and services begun on 31 October 1902. In early 1898, three companies had applied for local tramway systems, the Barnsley Corporation applied in 1900 for a larger network than it finally built. In 1913, the company began to run motor buses to Hoyland and other points, Electric was dropped form the company name in 1919. the Barnsley company changed its name to Yorkshire Traction Co. in 1928 and abandoned tramway operation in 1930. Ignoring Oxford and Bristol, YTC is the largest bus operator to have originated from a tramway company in England.

Barnsley was a rural district in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England from 1894 to 1938. It encompassed the surrounding area but did not include the town of Barnsley.
