Lake Hartwell is a man-made reservoir bordering Georgia and South Carolina and encompassing parts of the Savannah, Tugaloo, and Seneca rivers. Lake Hartwell is one of the Southeastern United States' largest recreation lakes. The lake was created by the construction of the Hartwell Dam, completed in 1962 and located on the Savannah River seven miles (11 km) below the point at which the Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers join to form the Savannah. Extending 49 miles (79 km) up the Tugaloo and 45 miles (72 km) up the Seneca at normal pool elevation, the lake comprises nearly 56,000 acres (230 km2) of water with a shoreline of 962 miles (1,548 km). The entire Hartwell "Project" contains 76,450 acres (309 km2) of land and water. I-85 bisects Hartwell Lake and makes the area easily accessible to visitors.

The Seneca River is created by the confluence of the Keowee River and Twelvemile Creek in northwestern South Carolina, downriver from Lake Keowee near Clemson. It is now entirely inundated by Lake Hartwell, and forms a 21-mile-long (34 km) arm of the lake. The Seneca River and the Tugaloo River join to form the Savannah River.The boundary between the Seneca River and the Keowee River has changed over time. In the Revolutionary War period, the upper part of the Seneca River was often called the Keowee River.In current times, the section of the Keowee River between the Keowee Dam and its confluence with Twelvemile Creek is called the Seneca River on many maps, including the official county highway map. Since this area was flooded by Lake Hartwell, created by damming the Seneca and Tugaloo rivers, this section is often referred to as the Seneca.

The Tugaloo River (originally Tugalo River) is a 45.9-mile-long (73.9 km) river that forms part of the border between the U.S. states of Georgia and South Carolina. It was named for the historic Cherokee town of Tugaloo at the mouth of Toccoa Creek, south of present-day Toccoa, Georgia and Travelers Rest State Historic Site in Stephens County, Georgia. It is fed by the Tallulah River and the Chattooga River, which each form an arm of Lake Tugalo, on the edge of Georgia's Tallulah Gorge State Park. The Tugaloo flows out of the lake via Tugaloo Dam, passing into Lake Yonah and through Yonah Dam. The river ends as an arm of Lake Hartwell, as does South Carolina's Seneca River after its confluence with the Keowee River. Below Lake Hartwell, it is called the Savannah River.

Andersonville was a town in Anderson County, South Carolina, that was settled around 1800. It was named for Robert Anderson, who was a Revolutionary War veteran. Although it had been a thriving textile and trading community, it suffered from repeated floods and was bypassed by the railroad. The construction of Lake Hartwell displaced the remnants of the community. Today the nearest incorporated communities are Hartwell, Georgia, across the lake to the southwest, and Anderson, South Carolina, to the North.

Hartwell Lakeside Park, formerly known as Hart State Park, is a 147 acres (59 ha) park in Hartwell, in northeast Georgia. The park is named after the American Revolutionary War heroine Nancy Hart, who lived in the Georgia frontier, and it was her devotion to freedom that has helped make her name commonplace in the Georgia upcountry.This recreation area is used by the community for swimming, boating, water skiing and water sports in general, and fishing on Lake Hartwell, and for hiking and biking on a 1.5 miles (2.4 km) trail. Hart Park also offers a playground for children and a self-registration campground, which is opened seasonally from March 15 until September 15.

The Jackson Morrison House, at 439 Rome St. in Hartwell, Georgia, was built around 1902. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It has also been known as the Turner Property.It is a one-story, frame, Plain-style house with a main gable roof and a rear ell.It was built by Jackson Morrison, a black carpenter and farmer.

The H. E. Fortson House, at 221 Richardson St. in Hartwell, Georgia, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.It was built around 1913. It is a one-story frame house with a hipped roof and a wrap-around shed-roofed porch. It was deemed "important in local black/social history for its association with the Reverend H. E. Fortson" and its NRHP nomination provides:Fortson served as minister of the Hartwell First Baptist Church in the early twentieth century and preached at other Baptist churches in Hart County during his career. He was a prominent minister and teacher in the Rome community of Hartweil. Traditionally, churches were among the most important social and cultural institutions in black communities, and ministers were among the prominent figures in these communities; the role played by Fortson in the Rome section of Hartwell is no exception. / Architecturally, the Fortson House is significant as an example of the type of house built for and lived in by relatively prominent middle-class black citizens of Hartwell in the early 20th century. This type of modest, straightforward house, with its simple arrangement of rooms around a central hall and its wrap-around porch and hipped roof, typifies the housing found in many of Georgia's small-town black neighborhoods. Relatively few examples of this type of housing survive with their major features intact, making this house a good example of the type.

The Hart County School District is a public school district in Hart County, Georgia, United States, based in Hartwell. It serves the communities of Bowersville, Canon, Hartwell, Reed Creek, and Royston.

The Franklin Street-College Avenue Residential Historic District is a historic district in Hartwell, Georgia which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.The district is roughly bounded by Johnson, Maple, Franklin and First, and Carter Sts. It includes 29 contributing buildings on 20 acres (8.1 ha). It includes some commercial buildings and the brick Works Progress Administration-built community clubhouse at the corner of Howell and Richardson, as well as Victoria eclectic and Craftsman bungalow houses.

In 2016 the library was named Georgia's Public Library of the Year.Hart County Library is a member of PINES, a program of the Georgia Public Library Service that covers 53 library systems in 143 counties of Georgia. Any resident in a PINES supported library system has access to the system's 10.6 million book collection. The library is also serviced by GALILEO, a program of the University System of Georgia which stands for "GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online". This program offers residents in supported libraries access to over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. It also boasts over 10,000 journal titles in full text.
