The station opened on March 4, 2000, with the streetcar's extension to Fisherman's Wharf.The stop is also served by the route 39 bus, plus the L Owl bus route, which provides service along the F Market & Wharves and L Taraval lines during the late night hours when trains do not operate.

From Pier 41 you can see Angel Island, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge and Pier 39. Pier 39 is a shopping center and popular tourist attraction built on a pier in San Francisco, California. At Pier 39, there are shops, restaurants, a video arcade, street performances, the Aquarium of the Bay, virtual 3D rides, and views of California sea lions hauled out on docks on Pier 39's marina. A two-story carousel is one of the pier's more dominant features, although it is not directly visible from the street and sits towards the end of the pier. The family-oriented entertainment and presence of marine mammals make this a popular tourist location for families with kids. Aquarium of the Bay is a public aquarium located at The Embarcadero and Beach Street, at the edge of Pier 39 in San Francisco, California. The aquarium is focused on local aquatic animals from the San Francisco Bay and neighboring rivers and watersheds as far as the Sierra Mountains. Since 2005 the Aquarium has focused its mission on enabling ocean conservation and climate action both locally and globally. It is one of seven institutions under parent company Bay Ecotarium, the largest watershed conservation organization in the Bay Area The Aquarium of the Bay is a Smithsonian Affiliate, accredited by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and certified as a Green Business by the city of San Francisco. It contains over 750,000 gallons of salt water that over 24,000 animals from 200+ species call home. It is the only Smithsonian-affiliated aquarium in the state of California.

Waterfront Park is a park along San Francisco's Embarcadero, near Pier 39, in the U.S. state of California. The park, established in 1976, is owned by the Port Authority. The park is home to the Skygate sculpture.

The Pier 43 Ferry Arch is an historic ferry arch at Pier 43 in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, in the U.S. state of California. Its headhouse, a decorated hoisting tower for loading and unloading rail cars on and off ferries, was built in 1914 to serve the Belt Railroad. The wood pier was replaced in 1996. The headhouse was rehabilitated in 2002–2003 to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards after a fire in 1998.

Skygate is an outdoor 1985 stainless steel sculpture by Roger Barr, installed along the Embarcadero in San Francisco, California, in the United States. The sculpture was the first piece of public art along the Embarcadero.

Meiggs' Wharf (also known as Meigs Wharf and Meiggs' Pier) was an L-shaped wooden pier extending between 1,600 and 2,000 feet (490 and 610 m) from the northern San Francisco shoreline, an exceptional distance for its time. It was built by transplanted Bostonian Henry Meiggs to attract the lumber shipping trade as part of his real estate development plans for what would become the North Beach area of San Francisco. Though it bankrupted him in the process, it would become a major part of North Beach and San Francisco society life.

The Cobweb Palace was a popular saloon and restaurant at Meiggs Wharf in San Francisco, California during and after the Gold Rush. It was run by eccentric "Old Abe" Warner, who traded drinks for exotic pets, curios, and pieces of scrimshaw as well as money. An old, physically disabled sailor sold peanuts outside. The Palace was popular with seafarers, tourists, and locals alike. Old Abe's menu included free chowder, seafood, alcohol, and local French bread, but not straight whisky, which he thought of as a lesser drink. There was a shooting gallery, and the bar was a few steps below the sidewalk.Mark Twain may have visited the place.
