Washington Iron Furnace

The Farm is a historic home located at Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia. The house was probably built during the late-18th century, expanded in the 1820s, and heavily remodeled in the Greek Revival style around 1856. It is a two-story, frame dwelling sheathed in weatherboard with a single-pile, central-passage-plan. It features a two-story, projecting front porch. Later additions were made in the late-19th and early-20th century. Also on the property are a contributing one-story brick slave quarters/summer kitchen and the site of a farm office marked by a stone chimney. The house was used as the ironmaster's house for the nearby Washington Iron Furnace. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Franklin County is a county located in the Blue Ridge foothills of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 54,477. Its county seat is Rocky Mount. Franklin County is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located in the Roanoke Region of Virginia. The Roanoke River forms its northeast boundary with Bedford County.

Henry Fork is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Franklin County, Virginia, United States, just south of Rocky Mount. The population as of the 2010 census was 1,234.

The Pigg River is a river in south-west Virginia in the United States. It is a tributary of the Roanoke River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean via Albemarle Sound. The Pigg River rises on Fivemile Mountain in western Franklin County and flows generally eastwardly through Franklin and Pittsylvania Counties, past the town of Rocky Mount. It joins the Roanoke River from the south (along a section of the Roanoke often known locally as the Staunton River) as part of the Leesville Reservoir, which is formed by a dam on the Roanoke. Recently, several dams across the Pigg River have been removed. In 2017, the 100 year old power dam at Rocky Mount was breached to restore the historic flow and to improve the habitat of the Roanoke logperch, an endangered species. Other dams removed recently include the dam near the Rocky Mount Veterans Memorial Park in 2013, and the Wasena dam in 2009. The river is named for John Pigg, an early settler from Amelia County, Virginia, who in 1741 acquired 400 acres of land through which the unnamed river passed.

Ferrum is a census-designated place (CDP) in Franklin County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,043 at the 2010 census, an increase of over fifty percent from the 1,313 reported in 2000. Ferrum is home to Ferrum College and its Blue Ridge Folklife Festival. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area.

W. B. Adams Stadium is a 5,500-seat stadium in Ferrum, Virginia where it serves as home to the Ferrum College football team as well as the school's recently founded Men's Lacrosse team. The stadium was completed in 1960 and is on a complex with a full-sized practice field.

Ferrum College is a private college in Ferrum, Virginia. The college was established in 1913 as the Ferrum Training School (also referred to as the Ferrum Institute by its board of trustees) for primary and secondary education to serve the mountain communities of rural Southwest Virginia. The school was known as Ferrum Junior College between 1940 and 1976. It was founded by the United Methodist Church and gradually developed from primary to post-secondary education. Today, Ferrum enrolls around 800 undergraduate and graduate students and offers over 54 undergraduate majors and four graduate programs. Ferrum College's 700-acre (280 ha) campus is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Rocky Mount, Virginia, in Franklin County. Its athletic teams compete in Division III of the NCAA in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Ferrum has 11 men's teams and 14 women's teams, and its mascot is the Panther. The football team is commonly referred to as the "Black Hats." Ferrum College is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.

Waverly is a historic home and farm located near Burnt Chimney, Franklin County, Virginia. It was built beginning about 1853 for Armistead Lewis Burwell (1809-1883) and his family, who inherited it (or received it as a dowry) from the parents of his wife, Mary Hix (1811-1895). Descended from the First Families of Virginia, Armistead L. Burwell operated a tobacco and grain plantation of about 350 improved acres using enslaved labor, and also had a chewing tobacco factory, gristmill and sawmill by 1860 (probably also operated by some of his 37 slaves per that year's federal census). His son William A. Burwell (1836-1882) ran the factory and bought the plantation from his father in 1864, and sold it in 1868 to his younger brother John Spotswood Burwell (1846-1926, a Confederate drummer during the war) who operated a dairy farm until after the turn of the century.The two-story frame house has a central passage plan, and reflects the Greek Revival style. Approximately 52 feet by 38 feet in size, it sits on a brick foundation. The property also includes a contributing meathouse and a foundation, icehouse ruins, and the remains of the 19th century landscaping. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Cahas Mountain Rural Historic District is a national historic district located near Boones Mill, Franklin County, Virginia. It encompasses 33 contributing buildings, 10 contributing sites, and 8 contributing structures. Most historic (above-ground) resources are associated with the four farms that compose the district. They include the John and Susan Boon House (c. 1820), Taylor-Price House (c. 1821, c. 1850), Boon-Garst House (1902, 1945-1946), and Washington and Rinda Boon House (1889). The historic sites include the Boone Cemetery (1911).A portion of the Carolina Road roadbed can be seen at Maggoty Gap, where it crossed the Blue Ridge at Maggodee Gap. Today this is part of the Cahas Mountain Rural Historic District in Boones Mill, Virginia. The volume of travel along this part of the Carolina road was so great that it encouraged the construction of two brick homes from the 1820s, the John and Susan Boon House and the Taylor-Price house. The Boon house offered accommodations for travelers, and probably the Taylor Price House was also used as an inn. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Jubal A. Early House, also known as the Jubal A. Early Homeplace and Archeological Site, is a historic home and archaeological site located near Boones Mill, Franklin County, Virginia. The original dwelling was built in the first decade of the 19th century, and enlarged after 1847. It is a two-story, four-bay, frame dwelling with a side gable roof. It has a rear ell and takes a "T" shape. It was the childhood home of Confederate General Jubal Early (1816-1894), whose father Joab managed a tobacco plantation of more than 4,000 acres. The property was sold by the Early family in 1847. The Jubal A. Early Preservation Trust has owned the property since 1995.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Finney–Lee House is a historic home near Snow Creek, Franklin County, Virginia. It was built in 1838–1839 and is a two-story, three-bay brick dwelling. It has a gable roof and exterior end chimneys. The interior features Federal and Greek Revival design details. Also on the property are the contributing front walkway, pack house (c. 1930), two tobacco barns (c. 1900), a cemetery, and a road trace. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Booth–Lovelace House, also known as the Overhome Bed and Breakfast, is a historic home located near Hardy, Franklin County, Virginia. It was built in approximately 1859 and is a large, two-story, frame dwelling with weatherboard siding. It has a metal-sheathed hip roof above a bracketed Italianate cornice and three Greek Revival one-story porches. Also on the property are a contributing office / dwelling, ash house, granary, barn, and spring. The house was converted to a bed and breakfast in the 1990s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
