Ferrum College is a private college in Ferrum, Virginia. The college was established in 1913 as the Ferrum Training School (also referred to as the Ferrum Institute by its board of trustees) for primary and secondary education to serve the mountain communities of rural Southwest Virginia. The school was known as Ferrum Junior College between 1940 and 1976. It was founded by the United Methodist Church and gradually developed from primary to post-secondary education. Today, Ferrum enrolls around 800 undergraduate and graduate students and offers over 54 undergraduate majors and four graduate programs. Ferrum College's 700-acre (280 ha) campus is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Rocky Mount, Virginia, in Franklin County. Its athletic teams compete in Division III of the NCAA in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Ferrum has 11 men's teams and 14 women's teams, and its mascot is the Panther. The football team is commonly referred to as the "Black Hats." Ferrum College is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.

W. B. Adams Stadium is a 5,500-seat stadium in Ferrum, Virginia where it serves as home to the Ferrum College football team as well as the school's recently founded Men's Lacrosse team. The stadium was completed in 1960 and is on a complex with a full-sized practice field.

Old Turner Place, also known as King's Grant One, is a historic home located near Henry, Henry County, Virginia. It was built about 1804, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, log dwelling with a gable roof and massive gable end chimneys. Also on the property is a contributing smokehouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Washington Iron Furnace is an historic iron furnace, located in Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia. The granite furnace was built around 1770, and measures 30 feet high on its south face. It helped establish industry in the county, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Considered one of the best preserved furnaces in Virginia, it was built against the side of a hill so that iron ore, charcoal and limestone could be transported to the site by wagon along the ridge and dumped into the top of the furnace. The original cart road and ten-yard-long bridge leading to the top no longer exists.

The Farm is a historic home located at Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia. The house was probably built during the late-18th century, expanded in the 1820s, and heavily remodeled in the Greek Revival style around 1856. It is a two-story, frame dwelling sheathed in weatherboard with a single-pile, central-passage-plan. It features a two-story, projecting front porch. Later additions were made in the late-19th and early-20th century. Also on the property are a contributing one-story brick slave quarters/summer kitchen and the site of a farm office marked by a stone chimney. The house was used as the ironmaster's house for the nearby Washington Iron Furnace. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Oakdale is a historic home and farm located near the town of Floyd in Floyd County, Virginia, United States. The house was built about 1890, and is a large two-story, three-bay, frame dwelling in the Queen Anne style. It has a complex hipped roof and features a double-tier heavily ornamented front porch with turned posts, a spindle frieze, and sawn brackets. Also, on the property are a contributing large center-aisle barn (c. 1890), a two-story brick general store building (c. 1890), and a granary (c. 1915) and garage (c. 1935). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Philpott Lake is a reservoir in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is impounded by Philpott Dam. The lake is at an elevation of 974 feet (297 m), covers an area of 2,900 acres (12 km2), and has a shoreline length of 100 miles (160 km). Philpott Lake extends into Franklin, Henry, and Patrick counties, Virginia. It is bordered by 6,424 acres (26.00 km2) of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed lands.The lake and Philpott Dam were created to control flooding along the Smith River, to generate hydroelectric power, and to provide recreational activities. Construction on Philpott Dam began in 1948 and was completed in 1952.Virginia state record lake trout and coho salmon were caught in Philpott Lake in 1966 and 1971, respectively. The last report of collection of a stocked Pacific salmon in this reservoir was in either late 1972 or January 1973, which may have been either a Chinook salmon or a coho.
