Naval Square, Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Naval Asylum is a complex of buildings at Gray's Ferry Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built in 1827 as a hospital, it later housed the Philadelphia Naval School, served as a home for retired sailors for the United States Navy from 1834 to 1976, and was ultimately redeveloped as luxury condominiums. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971, primarily for its architecture. Set on more than 20 acres (8.1 ha), the campus includes three buildings designed by architect William Strickland that are considered some of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States: Biddle Hall (the 1833 main building), the surgeon's residence and the governor's residence. For seven years, from 1838 until 1845, the campus housed the Philadelphia Naval School, a precursor to the United States Naval Academy. Beginning in 1838, midshipmen approaching examinations for promotion were assigned to the school for eight months of study. In 1842, William Chauvenet was placed in charge of the school and formalized much of the study. When the Naval Academy was formed in 1845, four of the seven faculty members came from the Philadelphia school. On July 1, 1889, its name was changed to Naval Home. In 1976, the Naval Home was moved to Gulfport, Mississippi, after it was determined that the Philadelphia facility could not be economically expanded and modernized.In 1988, the property was sold to residential developer Toll Brothers. The main building was damaged by arsonists in 2003. It has since been restored as luxury condominiums.

Grays Road Recreation Center is a historic recreation center located in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was designed by John T. Windrim and built in 1926–1927. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, five-bay by nine-bay, red-brick building on in the Colonial Revival style. It has a gable roof with dormers, centrally placed arched entryway with stone surround, and two internal brick chimneys. The interior features a two-story auditorium, measuring 50 feet by 30 feet. The building was funded by the Richard Smith Family Trust.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

William S. Peirce School is a historic school building located in the Southwest Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1928–1929. It is a four-story, nine bay, brick building on a raised basement in the Late Gothic Revival-style. It features pilasters with limestone caps and a projecting entrance pavilion with an arched opening.

Devil's Pocket is a small neighborhood in the South Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood, bordered by Christian and Taney streets, Grays Ferry Avenue, and the Naval Square development (the former U.S. Naval Asylum), consists of rowhouses tucked near an industrial landscape near the Schuylkill River. A historically Irish-American neighborhood, Devil’s Pocket has seen real estate development and gentrification in recent years, including a major expansion of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.According to one legend, Devil's Pocket got its name after a priest said the local youth were rough enough to steal from the devil’s pocket.The 1983 novel God's Pocket by Pete Dexter and its later 2014 film adaptation are set in the fictional South Philadelphia neighborhood of God's Pocket, which is based on the tough reputation of Devil's Pocket.

St. Anthony de Padua Parish School is a historic Catholic school building located in the Southwest Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1897, and is a four-story, red brick building with stone trim in the Romanesque Revival-style. It has rounded arched window openings, a hipped roof with dormer, and freestanding brick fire tower.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. It is currently used as senior housing.

Marine Corps Depot of Supplies, Schuylkill Warehouse was a historic warehouse located in the Schuylkill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The structure was demolished in 2015 to make way for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia expansion. It was built in two sections in 1941 and in 1943. It was a six-story, orange brick building in the Moderne-style. A one-story, brick addition was built about 1970. It has an off-center tower over the entrance, unornamented parapet and flat roof, long bands of steel windows, and wide loading bays separated by rounded concrete columns. It was built by and occupied by the United States Marine Corps into the 1960s. Afterwards, it was used as a vocational training facility, the John F. Kennedy Vocational Center, by the School District of Philadelphia into the 1980s. It was later used for administrative offices and storage.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Garden is one of only a very few located on Fairmount Park land, part of Philadelphia's Park System.

Ramcat Historic District, also known as the Schuylkill Historic District, is a national historic district located in the Rittenhouse Square West neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It encompasses 613 contributing buildings. It includes a mix of transportation-related, residential, and industrial properties. The mid- to late-19th century housing stock is characterized as two-story, rowhouse dwellings for the working class. Notable non-residential buildings include the Wanamaker delivery garage, Gimbel's delivery garage, Lanston Monotype Co., Lippincott and Co. Press Building, Thornton-Fuller Auto Assembly Plant (1925), Crane Ice Cream Co. (1904, 1914), and the New York Pie Baking Co.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Schuylkill River Park is a swath of land owned by the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It encompasses most of the area bordered by 25th Street and the Schuylkill River (more exactly the CSX Tracks) between Manning and Delancey Streets and the area bordered by the Schuylkill River and 26th Street between Delancey and Pine Streets. Some of this land was held by the Department of Recreation (Tennis Courts, Playground, Basketball Courts, Bike Polo / Street Hockey Area, and Recreation Center) prior to its recent merger with the Fairmount Park. In addition, the merged Department of Parks and Recreation owns the land from Taney Street to the Schuylkill River between Pine and the end of Schuylkill Pocket Veterans Memorial Field as well as O'Connor Pool. It also encompasses the Schuylkill River Park Community Garden, which is on land owned by the Department of Parks and Recreation and managed by the Center City Residents' Association. The area connects with the Schuylkill River Trail via a pedestrian bridge, which was completed in October 2012.

Fitler Square refers to a 0.5 acre (0.20 ha) public park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a surrounding neighborhood of the same name. The square is bounded on the east by 23rd Street, on the west by 24th Street, on the north by Panama Street, and on the south by Pine Street. The neighborhood encompasses much of southwest Center City to the west of Rittenhouse Square and east of the Schuylkill River. Fitler Square was named for late 19th century Philadelphia mayor Edwin Henry Fitler shortly after his death in 1896. The square lies on land owned by City of Philadelphia via the Department of Parks and Recreation, and is cared for through a public private partnership between the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Fitler Square Improvement Association.
