Zürich Wilderness Park

The Sihlwald is a forest and nature reserve in the Sihl Valley of the Swiss canton of Zürich. It is a rare example of a large-scale and original forest, situated on the eastern slopes of the Albis hills to the west side of the Sihl river. Although the forest is owned by the city of Zürich, it is situated outside the city boundary, within the municipality of Horgen and several adjoining municipalities. The Sihlwald now forms part of the Zürich Wilderness Park.The city of Zürich received the Sihl forest, or Sihlwald, as a gift in 1309 from the Hapsburgers and again in 1524 through the dissolution of the Fraumünster convent. Over the following centuries, the forest provided Zürich with timber and firewood. From 1876 on, there was even a forest railway which facilitated the work in the forest. However, the trees have not been felled since the 1990s; this is due to the actions of forest director Andreas Speich, in order to preserve the forest's unique composition. On August 28, 2009, the Federal Office for the Environment declared the Sihl forest a "regional nature park of national importance". The protection of Sihl forest was established through a forest reserve agreement in 2007 and a cantonal Protection Ordinance in 2008. In 2009, the management of the Sihlwald was combined with that of the nearby Langenberg Wildlife Park, to form the Zürich Wilderness Park.The forest can be reached via the Sihlwald railway station, served by service S4 of the Zurich S-Bahn.

Sihlwald is a railway station in the Sihl Valley, and the municipality of Horgen, in the Swiss Canton of Zürich. The station is on the Sihltal line, which is operated by the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU). The station takes its name from the surrounding Sihlwald forest and nature reserve, whose visitor centre is adjacent to the station.Sihlwald was the original terminus of the Sihtal line, which was opened from Bahnhof Selnau in Zürich in 1892. In 1897 the Sihltal line was extended to Sihlbrugg station and a connection with the Zürich to Lucerne line of the Swiss Northeastern Railway (NOB). The station retains a locomotive shed dating from the time of that extension that is used by the heritage railway association Zürcher Museums-Bahn. Today, the station is the formal terminus of service S4 of the Zürich S-Bahn, although the situation within a protected forest and with few other traffic generators nearby means that most S4 trains terminate at Langnau-Gattikon, one stop nearer Zürich, leaving this station to be served by one train an hour. The stretch of railway beyond Sihlwald to Sihlbrugg still exists, but no longer carries a regular passenger train service. The station is served by the following passenger trains:

The Zürcher Museums-Bahn (ZMB) is a heritage railway association based in the Swiss city of Zurich. It operates occasional services over the Sihltal line of the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn, and preserves rolling stock, much of which formerly belonged to that operator.On the last Sunday of every month from April to October, a steam service is operated from Zurich Wiedikon station to Sihlbrugg station. The ZMB preserves a selection of former Sihltal line rolling stock, including two early steam locomotives, and a railcar and a locomotive built for the original electrification.

The Bürglen (915 m) is the highest mountain of the Albis, a wooded range stretching west of Lake Zurich in the Swiss canton of Zurich. It is located between Hausen am Albis and the valley of the Sihl. The mountain is entirely traversed by a trail running along the crest. South of the Bürglen is the slightly lower summit of the Albishorn (909 m), where there is a panoramic restaurant.

Schnabelburg Castle (German: Schnabelburg) was a small castle erected in 1150 by the lords of Eschenbach (Switzerland, near Lucerne) on the Albis chain South-west of Zurich, Switzerland, overlooking the nearby Schnabellücken pass. In 1309 the Schnabelburg was destroyed by the Habsburgs, in revenge for the participation of Walter von Eschenbach in the murder of Albert I of Germany. All that is left today is low ruins, reachable in about 30 minutes on foot from the Albis Pass.

Sihl Valley (German: Sihltal) is a river valley and belongs to the Zimmerberg-Sihltal region located in the district of Horgen in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Commonly Sihltal is used as the name of the Lower Sihl Valley, i.e. the area in the southwest of the city of Zürich.

Gattikon is an adjacent settlement, part of the municipality of Thalwil.
