Hillsborough is an incorporated town in San Mateo County, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is located 17 miles (27 km) south of San Francisco on the San Francisco Peninsula, bordered by Burlingame to the north, San Mateo to the east, Highlands-Baywood Park to the south, and Interstate 280 to the west. The population was 11,387 as of 2020.

Carolands is one of the last of the houses built during the Gilded Age, a period of great mansion-building that included famous houses of the Vanderbilt family, such as Marble House, Biltmore Estate and The Breakers, and stately California houses such as Filoli and the Huntington family's mansions.

The Nueva School is a private school, with two campuses—the lower and middle school in Hillsborough, and the high school in San Mateo, California—serving gifted students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Nueva was founded in 1967 by Karen Stone McCown. Originally, the Nueva School only served younger students, but in 2013 it expanded to include a high school, and a new campus for it was built as part of the Bay Meadows development in San Mateo, opening in August 2014.Unique aspects of Nueva's curriculum include its focus on design thinking and social emotional learning. In his book That Used To Be Us, commentator Thomas Friedman lauded Nueva for its creativity-inspiring curriculum and overall philosophy.Nueva is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the California Association of Independent Schools. It has received the Blue Ribbon Award from the U.S. Department of Education in 1988, 1997, and 2010. Burlingame station is a Caltrain commuter rail station in Burlingame, California. The station building was constructed in the Spanish Colonial Revival and Mission Revival architecture styles in 1894, opening for service on October 10 of that year. 18th-century tiles from the Mission San Antonio de Padua at Jolon and the Mission Dolores Asistencia at San Mateo were used for the station roof.The station was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1971 and added to the National Register of Historic Places as Burlingame Railroad Station in 1978.Burlingame has two side platforms serving the line's two tracks. Until 2008, the station had a southbound side platform and a narrow island platform between the tracks - a common configuration at Southern Pacific stations. This required use of the hold-out rule, where only one train could be at the station as a time. The northbound side platform was completed on February 25, 2008, followed by a new southbound platform on April 1, thus eliminating the hold-out rule.

The Burlingame Museum of Pez Memorabilia, located in Burlingame, California, opened in 1995 and was run by Gary and Nancy Doss, who had been collecting Pez dispensers for more than a decade. The Doss couple initially ran a computer store and displayed some of their dispensers in the store, when they discovered that customers were more interested in the dispensers than in the computers. The museum claimed to have had an example of every Pez dispenser ever sold, including a Wonder Woman dispenser autographed by Lynda Carter and a Garfield dispenser autographed by Jim Davis.In 2004, the museum expanded and added the Classic Toy Museum, which featured well-known toys and related memorabilia. Toys on display included Tinker Toys, Erector Sets, Lincoln Logs, Mr. Potato Head, View-Masters, Colorforms, Lego, Play-Doh, Slinkys, and more. Part of the display included the Banned Toys Museum, which featured toys that were recalled or banned for a variety of reasons, such as for safety or appropriateness. The museum permanently closed in July 2019.

Arthur and Mona Hofmann House, also known as the Hofmann House, was built in 1937 and is a historic home located at 1048 Cuesta Road in Hillsborough, California. The building was designed by Modernist architect Richard Neutra in International Style. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since August 5, 1991. The house is a private residence and not open to the public.
