St Matthew's Church, Normanton-upon-Trent

Normanton on Trent is a village in Nottinghamshire, England. It is nine miles south-east of Retford. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 299, increasing to 345 at the 2011 census and including Low Marnham. In 1848, it had 362 inhabitants. The parish church of St Matthew is a Grade II* listed building, dating from the 13th century. Other listed buildings in Normanton include the Grade II listed Manor House on South Street; Normanton Hall on Main Street; and the former School House also on Main Street. The latter has an inscription: "Henry Jackson of this town Gent built and endowed this school for four pounds a year for the education of ten poor children belonging to this parish Anno Dom 1776". There are two public houses, however there are no shops. The nearest shop is the Co-Op, in Sutton-on-Trent. There is a Primary school in Normanton-on-Trent, St.Matthews C of E Primary school.

Grassthorpe is a small village and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. Population details are included in the civil parish of Weston. A former chapel of St James was in the village. It was converted into a cottage and barn during the reign of Elizabeth I. There is also a disused watermill.In the 1660s Gresthorpe Hall (i.e. Grassthorpe) was rented to Robert Shawe who supported the Quaker William Smith of Besthorpe (d. 1672) in speaking to 150 people of the ‘lowest and meanest’ sort there. Smith was allowed to attend by his Nottingham gaoler Robert White causing a sharp complaint in August 1669 from Rev John Hewes, the vicar of Normanton. There are three windmills recorded at Grassthorpe. A post mill was moved to Tuxford in 1814. A composite post mill was moved in 1870, again to Tuxford. A tower windmill in an orchard belonged to the Seels family. The miller in 1844 was Thomas Seels; the mill passed to Samuel Seels, who was 82 in 1935. The windmill was 3 storeys high, 14-foot (4.3 m) wide at the base, having 2 pairs of stones and dressing machinery. The top of the mill was pulled down by engine in 1934. At the south-east end of the village are three 16th century tenements built with cruck trusses.In 1870–72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Weston like this: "WESTON, a parish, with a village, in Southwell district, Notts; on the Great Northern railway, 3 miles NNW of Carlton-on-Trent. Post town, Newark. Acres, 1,690. Real property, £2,745. Pop., 380. Houses, 85. The manor belongs to Earl Manvers. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln. Value, £500. Patron, Earl Manvers. The church was recently repaired, and has a tower and spire. There are a Wesleyan chapel and an endowed school."

Sutton-on-Trent is a large village and parish in Nottinghamshire, situated on the Great North Road, and on the west bank of the River Trent. The village contains 2,450 acres of land and according to the 2001 census it had a population of 1,327, increasing marginally to 1,331 at the 2011 census.It is located 8 miles north of Newark-on-Trent, which takes approximately 20 minutes to reach by car, and 10 miles south of Retford, which takes approximately 22 minutes to reach by car. Sutton Mill was a stone-built tower windmill, built in 1825. It was owned by the Bingham family of Grassthorpe from the 1860s until 1984. The four-storey tower has been converted to a house.Sir Godfrey Hounsfield was born in Sutton-on-Trent on 28 August 1919, he went on to share the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Allan MacLeod Cormack for his part in developing the diagnostic technique of X-ray computed tomography (CT). The doctors Surgery on Hounsfield Way is named for him. He is buried in the cemetery on Ingram lane.
