South San Francisco is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States, located on the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city is colloquially known as "South City". The population was 63,632 at the 2010 census.

South San Francisco station is a Caltrain station in South San Francisco, California. The station is on the east side of the Bayshore Freeway (U.S. 101), east and south of the curved Grand Avenue overpass, and north of where the freeway crosses over the tracks. Downtown South San Francisco is to the west, across the freeway. It previously underwent a substantial modernization and expansion project, completed in January 2022.

Brisbane (pron. BRIZ-bayn, unlike Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) is a small city located in California in the northern part of San Mateo County on the lower slopes of San Bruno Mountain. It is located on the southern border of San Francisco, on the northeastern edge of South San Francisco, next to San Francisco Bay and near San Francisco International Airport. The population was 4,851 as of the 2020 census. Brisbane is called "The City of Stars" because of a holiday tradition established over 69 years ago. At the start of the Christmas/Hanukkah season, many residents and business owners place large, illuminated stars, some as big as 10 feet (3.0 m) or more in diameter, on the downhill sides of homes and offices throughout Brisbane. Many of the stars are kept up all year.

The South San Francisco Public Library is located in South San Francisco, California, California. It is an independent city library and part of the Peninsula Library System, a consortium of city, county, and community college libraries in San Mateo County. The library holds approximately 166,000 volumes and has 29,000 borrowers. In the fiscal year 2007-2008, the library circulated 687,000 items. The library provides access to homebound delivery services, numerous children's programs, a literacy program, a community learning center, 77 public computers, and free Wi-Fi.

Butler Road station was a train station in South San Francisco, California, in operation until July 1983 on the Peninsula Commute, a commuter rail service run by Southern Pacific between San Francisco and communities on the San Francisco Peninsula. The Butler Road train shelter was built in 1926.

Baden High School is a public continuation high school in the city of South San Francisco, California. The school is part of the South San Francisco Unified School District. The school is named for the Baden neighborhood of South San Francisco, formerly the town of Baden before South San Francisco was incorporated.The school serves approximately 100 students. Specialized programs include a Regional Occupation Program (ROP) program for hotel and hospitality work and a Teen Age Parenting Program.

It consists of two main tracks and a shared underground island platform. Service at the station began on June 22, 2003 as part of the BART San Mateo County Extension project that extended BART service southward from Colma to Millbrae and San Francisco International Airport.

The San Bruno Mountain Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve of 83 acres (34 ha) on the north slope of San Bruno Mountain, 8 miles (13 km) south of San Francisco, California, adjacent to the San Bruno Mountain State Park. It is managed by the California Department of Fish and Game to protect and preserve habitat, wildlife and open space, including the pristine Buckeye Canyon and parts of Owl Canyon. In 1989, the state Wildlife Conservation Board purchased the land as an ecological reserve with Proposition 70 funds. Proposition 70, the California Wildlife, Coastal and Park Land Conservation Bond Act, was approved by California voters in 1988.

It consists of two main tracks and a shared underground island platform. The station forms the current northern terminus of the Centennial Way Trail. Service at the station began on June 22, 2003 as part of the BART San Mateo County Extension project that extended BART service southward from Colma to Millbrae and San Francisco International Airport.

The Shops at Tanforan is a regional shopping mall in San Bruno, California, United States. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, 10 miles (16 km) south of San Francisco city limits. It is served by the adjacent San Bruno Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, as well as several local SamTrans bus lines and the Brisbane Shuttle. The complex is located minutes away from San Francisco International Airport. The site was originally used as a horse racing track from 1899 until 1964, when the grandstand was destroyed by fire; during World War II, the track was used as the Tanforan Assembly Center, where Japanese American citizens primarily from the San Francisco Bay Area were interned until more permanent War Relocation Centers were opened. Most Tanforan internees were sent to Topaz, Utah. A shopping mall was built on the site and opened in 1971. The mall underwent a 3-year renovation, and reopened in 2005. It continues to be anchored by one of its original 1971 retailers, JCPenney, while the other major anchor, Target, purchased its space from The Emporium in 1996. A Century Theatres was opened in 2008. In 2022, Alexandria Real Estate completed its acquisition of the site and announced the mall would be demolished and replaced with a biotech campus.

The Tanforan Assembly Center was created to temporarily detain nearly 8,000 Japanese Americans, mostly from the San Francisco Bay Area, under the auspices of Executive Order 9066. After the order was signed in February 1942, the Wartime Civil Control Administration acquired Tanforan Racetrack on April 4 for use as a temporary assembly center; plans called for the site to be used to accommodate up to 10,000 "evacuees" while permanent relocation sites were being prepared further inland. The Tanforan Assembly Center began operation in late April 1942, the first stop for thousands who were forced to relocate and undergo internment during World War II. The majority were U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry who were born in the United States. Tanforan Assembly Center was operated for slightly less than six months; most detainees at Tanforan were transferred to the Topaz War Relocation Center in Utah, starting in September. The transfer to Topaz was completed by mid-October, and the site was turned over to the Army a few weeks later.
