St Colanus' Church, Colan

Colan (Cornish: Kolan) is a village and civil parish in mid-Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated approximately three miles (5 km) east of Newquay. The electoral ward is called Colan and Mawgan. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 4,256 The hamlets of Bosoughan, Chapel, Gwills, Kestle Mill, Lane, Mountjoy, Quintrell Downs, Trebarber and Trencreek are in the parish. The Fir Hill, and Firhill Woods near Nanswhyden, contains the ruins of Fir Hill Manor. Colan Church dates back to the thirteenth century.

Fir Hill Manor is a manor house near Colan, mid-Cornwall, England, dating from the 1850s. In 1994, it was the subject of a BBC Bristol documentary, which tells the story of former Newquay policeman Derek Fowkes as he searches for absentee landlord, John Paget Figg-Hoblyn. John Paget Figg-Hoblyn claimed to be the rightful heir to the estate after the death of his father, Francis, who died in 1965. The inheritance was not settled for over 40 years.

Porth Reservoir is a reservoir in Cornwall, England, most of which is in the parish of Colan. The concrete dam was completed in 1960, and the lake has a net capacity of approximately 113,000,000 gallons (514,000,000 litres).The reservoir has an area of about 40 acres (0.16 km2), and a perimeter of approximately 3 miles (4.8 km). It now operates as a coarse fishery, with a nature reserve at one end.The reservoir is principally fed by the small river that starts near Ruthvoes, about 4 miles (6 km) to the east. From the reservoir's outlet, the river flows to St Columb Porth, where it enters the sea. Construction of the reservoir and dam was carried out by the Newquay & District Water Company. It was officially opened on 16 June 1960 by A. C. McLellan, then president of the Institution of Water Engineers.

Mountjoy is a hamlet in the civil parish of Colan in Cornwall, England. It is on the A392 road, east of Quintrell Downs.

Bosoughan is a village in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, approximately three miles (5 km) east of Newquay. According to the Post Office the population at the 2011 Census was included in the civil parish of Colan.

Royal Air Force St Mawgan or more simply RAF St Mawgan is a Royal Air Force station near St Mawgan and Newquay in Cornwall, England. In 2008 the runway part of the site was handed over to Newquay Airport. The remainder of the station continues to operate under the command of the RAF. RAF St Mawgan used to have the widest military runway in the UK (300 ft) and was the home of the Cornwall Air Ambulance service and more recently 505 (Wessex) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF).

Mawgan Porth Dark Age Village is a small ancient settlement consisting of 3 courtyard house complexes and a cemetery on the North coast of Cornwall dating from the 10th century. It was excavated in 1950-54 by Rupert Bruce-Mitford. The site was first discovered after the apparent after the discovery of the skeleton in 1934. The landowner. Mr P A Wailes, had wanted to build on the land and soundings to test the subsoil revealed the skeleton, stone walls, pottery and bone fragments.

Quintrell Downs is a village in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, close to Newquay, at the junction of the A392 and A3058 roads. It is named after the surrounding area of moorland. The village is served by Quintrell Downs railway station. The name 'Quintrell' comes from the French meaning fop or dandy and back 600 years. The 'Downs' is the area to the south of what is the Two Clomes Inn - this area was called the common. The village is surround three farms - Trethiggey, Trewollack and Bejowan and all of these can be traced back at least 200 years. The village had a growth period in the 1930s, houses appearing above the railway line on the way to Newquay and also from the chapel eastwards. In the late 1940s buildings were restricted for want of materials, growth started but was very slow.

The Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust is a charity that provides a dedicated helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The service also has two critical care cars that operate when the helicopter is unable to fly. Together they attend about 1,100 incidents per year. As of December 2018, the helicopter service had flown over 28,000 missions since 1987.When introduced on 1 April 1987, Cornwall's air ambulance was the first dedicated HEMS operational in the United Kingdom. The helicopter enables a fast response to the most critically ill or injured and can facilitate access to isolated locations, such as beaches, cliff-tops and moorland areas, which are less accessible by road.

Quintrell Downs railway station (Cornish: Goonkoyntrel) serves the village of Quintrell Downs in Cornwall, England. It is 300 miles 16 chains (300.20 miles, 483.13 km) measured from the zero point at London Paddington (via Box and Plymouth Millbay), on the Atlantic Coast Line. The station is managed by Great Western Railway with local services in each direction all calling here.

Cornwall Airport Newquay (IATA: NQY, ICAO: EGHQ) is the main commercial airport for Cornwall, England, located at Mawgan in Pydar, 4 NM (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) northeast of the town of Newquay on Cornwall's north coast. Its runway was operated by RAF St Mawgan before 2008, and is now owned by Cornwall Council and operated by Cornwall Airport Ltd. The airport handled 461,300 passengers in 2017, a 24.2% increase over the previous year. Newquay has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction. The Cornwall Air Ambulance is based at the airport. Since 2012, the airport has hosted the Aerohub enterprise zone. The 2,744 metre (9,003 ft) runway can take the largest and fastest of civil and military aircraft, having been built and maintained for decades as an RAF maritime operations base. The US Navy were present with the USN AWD storage facility and Joint Maritime Facility. With the end of the Cold War and changes in American political priorities, the Americans pulled out of all involvement with the base by the end of 2009. The last RAF flying squadron based at St Mawgan was 203(R) Squadron which moved out in 2008, while part of the site continues to be used by the RAF.The airport is also the location of Spaceport Cornwall. The facility has the capability to launch small space satellites into low Earth orbit using an air-launch-to-orbit type system.

Kestle and Kestle Mill are hamlets in Cornwall, England. They are situated south of Quintrell Downs; Kestle Mill is on the A3058 main road. It is mostly in the civil parish of St. Newlyn East Kestle is an ancient village originally named Kestell predating King John but not listed in the Domesday Book. Kestle Mill stands just back from the road behind the old road bridge. The last recorded use of the mill varies from 1915 to 1950 but photos exist of the mill building and wheel taken during the 1920s which show the mill wheel overgrown and out of use. It is certain that by 1955 the mill was disused and abandoned and around this time the Mill was converted into two cottages. Looking at the mill building from the road today, the old Mill house is on the left hand side and the converted mill is on the right. All that remains of the mill machinery on site are three millstones standing in front of the building and a small section of the old mill leat which used to feed into a small culvert to one side of the old bridge.
