Cornwall Airport Newquay (IATA: NQY, ICAO: EGHQ) is the main commercial airport for Cornwall, England, located at Mawgan in Pydar, 4 NM (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) northeast of the town of Newquay on Cornwall's north coast. Its runway was operated by RAF St Mawgan before 2008, and is now owned by Cornwall Council and operated by Cornwall Airport Ltd. The airport handled 461,300 passengers in 2017, a 24.2% increase over the previous year. Newquay has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction. The Cornwall Air Ambulance is based at the airport. Since 2012, the airport has hosted the Aerohub enterprise zone. The 2,744 metre (9,003 ft) runway can take the largest and fastest of civil and military aircraft, having been built and maintained for decades as an RAF maritime operations base. The US Navy were present with the USN AWD storage facility and Joint Maritime Facility. With the end of the Cold War and changes in American political priorities, the Americans pulled out of all involvement with the base by the end of 2009. The last RAF flying squadron based at St Mawgan was 203(R) Squadron which moved out in 2008, while part of the site continues to be used by the RAF.The airport is also the location of Spaceport Cornwall. The facility has the capability to launch small space satellites into low Earth orbit using an air-launch-to-orbit type system.

Fir Hill Manor is a manor house near Colan, mid-Cornwall, England, dating from the 1850s. In 1994, it was the subject of a BBC Bristol documentary, which tells the story of former Newquay policeman Derek Fowkes as he searches for absentee landlord, John Paget Figg-Hoblyn. John Paget Figg-Hoblyn claimed to be the rightful heir to the estate after the death of his father, Francis, who died in 1965. The inheritance was not settled for over 40 years.

Porth Reservoir is a reservoir in Cornwall, England, most of which is in the parish of Colan. The concrete dam was completed in 1960, and the lake has a net capacity of approximately 113,000,000 gallons (514,000,000 litres).The reservoir has an area of about 40 acres (0.16 km2), and a perimeter of approximately 3 miles (4.8 km). It now operates as a coarse fishery, with a nature reserve at one end.The reservoir is principally fed by the small river that starts near Ruthvoes, about 4 miles (6 km) to the east. From the reservoir's outlet, the river flows to St Columb Porth, where it enters the sea. Construction of the reservoir and dam was carried out by the Newquay & District Water Company. It was officially opened on 16 June 1960 by A. C. McLellan, then president of the Institution of Water Engineers.

The village is situated four miles northeast of Newquay, and the parish also includes the hamlet of Mawgan Porth. The surviving manor house known as Lanherne House is an early 16th-century grade I listed building. The nearby Royal Air Force station, RAF St Mawgan, takes its name from the village and is next to Newquay Cornwall Airport. The River Menalhyl runs through St Mawgan village and the valley is known as The Vale of Lanherne. It was the subject of a poem by poet Henry Sewell Stokes.

The Fir Hill, and Firhill Woods near Nanswhyden, contains the ruins of Fir Hill Manor. Colan Church dates back to the thirteenth century.
