Marmontains Formation

The Brèches du Grand Fond Group is a group of stratigraphic formations in France that were deposited between the Middle Jurassic and the Early Cretaceous. The deposition was contemporaneous to the rifting of the Valais ocean, and overlies the pre-rift rocks along an angular unconformity. The Brèches du Grand Fond Group is overlain by the post-rift sequences Couches de l’Aroley, Couches des Marmontains and the Couches de Saint Christophe.The Brèches du Grand Fond Group consists of two formations that are found in the External Valais units, the younger Pyramides Calcaires Formation and the older Dent d'Arpire Formation. The deposition of these two units was roughly contemporaneous to the deposition of the Brèches du Collet des Rousses and the Complexe Antéflysch Formation of the Internal Valais units.In general the Brèches du Grand Fond Group consists of coarse grained clastic sediments composed of pre-rift lithologies. The Couches de l’Aroley (short: Aroley Formation) are a sedimentary formation deposited during the Early Cretaceous (Barremian to Aptian). They consist of calcitic schists with dolomite clasts interbedded with finegrained conglomerates. The whole sequence is about 100 m thick.The Couches de l’Aroley are the lowest of the three post-rift sequences deposited in the Valais ocean. It overlies syn-rift sequences of the Brèches du Grand Fond Group.The Aroley Formation can be found within the following nappes: External Valais Moûtiers unit Roc de l'Enfer unit Petit St. Bernard unit Internal Valais Versoyen unitThe type locality is the Massif de la Pierre Avoi, in Saxon, Valais, Switzerland. The formation is named after a "Plan Aroley" which lies below the Pierre Avoi. It was first described by Rudolf Trümpy 1952.The Couches de l’Aroley can be correlated with the Klus Formation and the Tristel Formation found in eastern Switzerland, the Engadin window and the Tauern window.

The Couches de Saint Christophe are a sedimentary formation deposited between the Late Cretaceous and the Paleogene. It is a very monotonous sequence of calcitic sandstones and black schists. These are interpreted as a turbidite sequence. The average thickness of the unit is 500 m. The Couches de Saint Christophe are a post-rift sequence that overlies the Couches des Marmontains.The Couches de Saint Christophe occupy the following nappes: External ValaisMoûtiers unit Roc de l'Enfer unit Petit St. Bernard unitInternal ValaisVersoyen unitLarge outcrops of the Couches de Saint Christophe crop out north of Bourg-Saint-Maurice.The type locality of the formation is the Val de Bagnes in the canton Valais of Switzerland. It was first described by Rudolf Trümpy in 1952. The formation is named after a chapel (46.094905°N 7.200371°E / 46.094905; 7.200371) to the northwest of Verbier.The Saint Christophe Formation can be correlated with the Sassauna Formation found in Graubünden and calcareous flysch found in the Engadine.

Bourg-Saint-Maurice (French pronunciation: [buʁ sɛ̃ mɔʁis, - moʁ-] ; Arpitan: Bôrg-Sant-Mori or simply Le Bôrg), popularly known as Bourg, is a commune in the Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. Located on the Italian border south of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, it had a population of 7,252 as of 2018. It serves as a transport hub for the Paradiski ski area, with direct rail travel from London (Connecting in Lille), and Amsterdam during the winter.

Bourg-Saint-Maurice station (French: Gare de Bourg-Saint-Maurice) is a railway station in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in south-east France. The station is located at the end of the St-Pierre-d'Albigny-Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway. The station is served by TGV (high-speed long-distance) and TER (regional) services operated by SNCF. During the winter months Eurostar services from Amsterdam, Brussels and Lille travel to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The station was heavily rebuilt for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville. The station also features some sidings to store passenger trains when not in use. Juxtaposed controls are in fitted in the station for Eurostar passengers travelling to the United Kingdom (a routing not currently in service). Passengers clear Schengen Area exit checks (carried out by Customs officers) as well as UK immigration entry checks (conducted by the UK Border Force) in the station before boarding their train on a secure, gated platform.

Ouvrage Cave-à-Canon is a lesser work (petit ouvrage) of the Maginot Line's Alpine extension, the Alpine Line. Started in 1937, the ouvrage consists of one infantry block about one kilometer east of Bourg St. Maurice, on the south bank of the Isère. A short gallery with cross galleries extends into the rock, with an emergency exit and ventilation shaft halfway back. The ouvrage was incomplete in 1940, under the command of Lieutenant Courteaud.Cave-à-Canon, and with Ouvrage Chatelard across the valley to the north, and several pre-1914 forts on the heights around Bourg-Saint-Maurice, were placed to block an advance over the Little St Bernard Pass toward Albertville.
