Wennington railway station

Wennington is a civil parish in the City of Lancaster district in Lancashire, England. The 2001 Census recorded the parish's population as 102, and the 2011 Census recorded it as 178.The village is on the B6480, near the River Wenning and the Yorkshire border. It is administered by Wennington Parish Council. Wennington Hall is to the north.

Just west of Wennington railway station was Wennington junction where the Furness and Midland Joint Railway left the North Western section of the Midland Railway. On 11 August 1880 the 12:15 Leeds to Lancaster train completely derailed at the junction points then continued for 166 yards (152 m) before striking the abutment of a bridge. The junction had no super-elevation as continuous crossing timbers were in use thus reducing the safe speed, and the Midland Railway were advised to correct this. But the enquiry also found the braking power of the train to be grossly inadequate; the train should have been able to stop before reaching the bridge. Only the locomotive was fitted with a Westinghouse brake and there was only one brake van on the train. Although the Midland Railway was fitting continuous brakes to its passenger trains the enquiry pointed out that such a recommendation had been made twenty years previously and the actions had still not been completed.

Wennington Hall is a former country house in Wennington, a village in the City of Lancaster district in Lancashire, England. The house is a Grade II listed building and from 1940 until 2022 was used as a school, at first by the Quaker boarding school Wennington School before its move to Yorkshire, then by Lancashire County Council.

The Church of St James the Less is in the village of Tatham, Lancashire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Tunstall, the archdeaconry of Lancaster and the diocese of Blackburn. Its benefice is united with those of St Wilfrid, Melling, St John the Baptist, Tunstall, St Peter, Leck, the Good Shepherd, Lowgill, and Holy Trinity, Wray, to form the benefice of East Lonsdale. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It stands above the flood plain of the River Wenning.

In 2001, it had a population of 393, increasing slightly to 396 at the 2011 Census.A large part of the parish of Tatham is an upland area, known as Tatham Fells, which includes the largest settlement in Tatham, Lowgill; its highest point, at Ward's Stone; and the Great Stone of Fourstones, known locally as "the Big Stone".

The River Roeburn is a river in Lancashire, England. Sourced at Salter Fell, the Roeburn flows northwards through Roeburndale to Wray, where it falls into the River Hindburn. Flash flooding of the river in 1967 caused substantial damage to the village of Wray.

Cantsfield is a hamlet and civil parish in the City of Lancaster, in Lancashire, England, near the boundary with North Yorkshire. It is situated near the River Greta and on the A687 road near the junction with the A683. The parish had a population of 76 according to the 2001 census. In the 2011 census the parish was included with Tunstall. The village is a designated conservation area.Thurland Castle, situated between Cantsfield and Tunstall, was originally built in the 14th century, and after being damaged during the English Civil War and rebuilt on two occasions, has now been converted into apartments.

The Ridding is a Victorian country house located in the village of Bentham, North Yorkshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.It was built in Scottish Baronial style for B. H. Bent by E. G. Paley in 1857–60, the only building designed in this style by Paley. It is built of squared rubble with sandstone ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The frontage has three bays in two storeys and incorporates a short two-stage tower at the left.

Wray-with-Botton is a civil parish in the City of Lancaster district and the English county of Lancashire. In 2001 it had a population of 521, increasing to 532 at the Census 2011. The parish includes the village of Wray. Wray is the home of the annual scarecrow festival on the 1st Monday in May every year.
