Lake Lungern (German: Lungerersee, also spelled Lungernsee or Lungerensee) is a natural lake in Obwalden, Switzerland which is named after the town Lungern on its shore. The lake is drained by the Sarner Aa river, which flows through the Sarnersee and into Lake Lucerne.The lake was originally much larger, and covered a large part of the valley it is situated in. Starting in 1836, its level was lowered by 36 metres (118 ft) through an artificial drainage tunnel with a length of 380 metres (1,250 ft). It is used as a reservoir.

The point is the centre of mass determined in 1988 by Swisstopo. As the point is difficult to access, a stone was set 500 m further south-east on Älggi Alp (1645 m). This symbolizes the centre of Switzerland and is located at 46°47′54″N 8°13′55″E (Swiss Grid: 660557/183338). A plaque on the stone commemorates the winner of the "Swiss of the Year" award.

The municipalities of Sarnen and Sachseln are located on the shores of the lake, and the Brünig railway line follows the eastern shore.The lake's area is about 7.5 km2 (2.9 sq mi) and its maximum depth is 51 m. Ewil Maxon railway station is a Swiss railway station on the Brünig line, owned by the Zentralbahn, that links Lucerne and Interlaken. The station is in the municipality of Sachseln in the canton of Obwalden. It takes its name from the nearby hamlet of Ewil, together with the precision electric motor manufacturer Maxon Motor, whose plant adjoins the station.

The Sachseln Tunnel is a tunnel in the Swiss canton of Obwalden. It runs to the south-east of the Lake of Sarnen (Sarner See) between Giswil and Sarnen, bypassing the old road along the lake side, and forms part of the A8 motorway. The tunnel was completed in 1997 and is 5,231 metres (17,162 ft) long.The speed limit through the tunnel is 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph).As the tunnel does not meet modern safety standards, work is being undertaken to uprate it, with the construction of a parallel safety tunnel with cross connections at least every 300 metres (980 ft), and the renewal of ventilation and other safety equipment. The work is expected to be completed by 2019.
