St Mary's Church, Lower Ince

The Metropolitan Borough of Wigan is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, in North West England. It is named after the main settlement of Wigan. It covers the towns of Atherton, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Golborne, Hindley, Ince-in-Makerfield, Leigh and Tyldesley. The borough also covers the villages and suburbs of Abram, Aspull, Astley, Bryn, Hindley Green, Lowton, Mosley Common, Orrell, Pemberton, Shevington, Standish, Winstanley and Worsley Mesnes. The borough was formed in 1974, replacing several former local government districts. It is the furthest west part of Greater Manchester, and it is bordered by the Greater Manchester boroughs of City of Salford and Bolton to the east, the Cheshire borough of Warrington to the south, the Merseyside borough of St Helens to the south west, and the Lancashire boroughs of West Lancashire to the west and Chorley to the north.

Wigan Springs Branch TMD is a traction maintenance depot located in Ince in Makerfield, Greater Manchester, England. The depot is situated on the West Coast Main Line and is about 2 km (1.2 mi) south of Wigan North Western station. Springs Branch depot was rebuilt and reopened on 7 February 2020.The depot code is SP. From March 1958 until the introduction of TOPS in May 1973, it was 8F.

Ince-in-Makerfield Town Hall, also known as Ince-in-Makerfield Council Offices, is a municipal building in Ince Green Lane, Ince-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester, England. The building is currently used as a children's nursery.

Ince railway station serves the Ince area of Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester. The station is on the Manchester-Southport Line 17¼ miles (28 km) north west of Manchester Victoria. Until November 1964, Ince was also served by a station at Lower Ince on the line from Wigan Central to Glazebrook (to the now closed Manchester Central). Ince suffered in the 1960s and 1970s from much house clearance and landscaping. This has resulted in low passenger usage for the station which served an area which was (until the 1960s) a bustling independent town. Ince (unlike Daisy Hill and Hindley, and other stations on the line) is not a commuter dormitory suburb and now the station is deserted even at peak times. Usage figures increased by around 10% in 2006/07 and recently by greater amounts (around 25% in 2007/08, and 29% in 2010-11) albeit from a relatively low base. There are three seats, with a new shelter that contains benches. There is also a newly installed LED next train indicator sign (which the station did not previously have) and a payphone. A series of improvement works during June and July 2018 to the station added an array of CCTV cameras and a new Card-Only ticket machine. The station is entirely unstaffed and customers must obtain tickets from the ticket machine on the platform. those wishing to pay for their ticket with cash must use the ticket machine to obtain a 'Promise to Pay' and pay the conductor on the train.

Christ Church is in Ince Green Lane, Lower Ince, Ince-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Wigan, the archdeaconry of Warrington, and the diocese of Liverpool. Its benefice is combined with that of St Catharine, Wigan. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Westwood Power Station was a coal-fired power station situated adjacent to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Ince-in-Makerfield in Greater Manchester, North West England.

Empress Mill, Ince was a single storey shed mill alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, spinning cotton in Ince, Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. It was acquired by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in 1930, and passed to Courtaulds in 1964. Production ceased in 1975. It was the last mill in Ince to close, despite the intervention of Member of Parliament Michael McGuire, and a debate in the House of Commons on 20 March 1975.

St Catharine's Church is in Lorne Street, Scholes, Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Wigan, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the diocese of Liverpool. Its benefice is united with that of Christ Church, Ince-in-Makerfield. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It was a Commissioners' church, having received a grant towards its construction from the Church Building Commission.

Hawkley Hall was a mansion house in Pemberton, about 1.5 miles from Wigan and to the east of Goose Green. The hall was demolished many years ago and a housing estate occupies the site today known as the "Hawkley Hall Estate".

Scholes is an urban area in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. Scholes is immediately to the east of Wigan's town centre; separated from the commercial area by the River Douglas. Historically a part of Lancashire, Scholes is noted for its council estate and series of tower blocks, which are prominent features in this area of the town. North West England has several places called Scholes. Some, like Scholes in Wigan, are simply areas within towns, however, some are actual villages in their own right which are totally stand-alone.Scholes was once a ward of Wigan, east of the town centre. As described in the Victoria Histories of the Counties of England, Lancashire (VCH Lancs, Vol. 4), the district formerly had four wards: St George and St Patrick, the innermost divided by a street called Scholes, and Lindsay and St Catherine's outside. It is now contained in the Wigan Central ward. The Church of St Catherine was consecrated in 1841 and has a small graveyard attached. In October 1864 representatives of James Horrocks of Spennymoor, claiming to be the heir of Robert Ford who died in 1772, took possession of the ‘Manor House' in Scholes and were besieged for some days, to the excitement of the town.

The County Borough of Wigan was, from 1889 to 1974, a local government district centred on Wigan in the northwest of England. It was alternatively known as Wigan County Borough. The district was created by the Local Government Act 1888, with its boundaries based upon the earlier Municipal Borough of Wigan. The adjacent township of Pemberton constituted the Pemberton Urban District from 1894 to 1904, when it became part of the county borough of Wigan. In 1920, the Pemberton parish was abolished and its former area was used to enlarge the Wigan parish, making the areas of the parish and county borough identical.As part of the terms of any county borough in England, it was decided that to let the then Lancashire County Council have authority over Wigan would be impractical due to its large size, population and industry, and so the district was independent from the administrative county of Lancashire it would otherwise have been part of. The County Borough of Wigan was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 and its territory transferred to Greater Manchester to form part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.
