Meathop Moss

Meathop is a village in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, England. Historically in Westmorland, it is located 3.6 miles (5.8 km) north east of Grange over Sands, between the confluence of the River Kent estuary and the River Winster on the edge of Morecambe Bay.Westmorland Sanatorium, later known as Meathop Hospital, was a sanatorium for patients with tuberculosis. It opened in 1891 and closed in 1991 when it was converted into apartments and renamed as Meathop Grange.

Meathop and Ulpha is a former civil parish, now in the parish of Witherslack, Meathop and Ulpha, in the South Lakeland district of the English county of Cumbria. Historically in Westmorland, it is located 3.6 miles (5.8 km) north east of Grange-over-Sands, 10.6 miles (17.1 km) south west of Kendal and 64.0 miles (103.0 km) south of Carlisle, between the confluence of the River Kent estuary and the River Winster. In 2001 it had a population of 143, increasing slightly to 154 at the Census 2011. It included the village of Meathop. There were two Sites of Special Scientific Interest in the parish: Meathop Moss is a raised peat-bog designated an SSSI for its biological interest. Leased by the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves in 1919, it now belongs to the Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Meathop Woods and Quarry, which consists of woodland and a disused quarry on the side of a hill, has biological and geological interest.

Witherslack, Meathop and Ulpha is a civil parish in the South Lakeland district of the English county of Cumbria. Historically in Westmorland, it is located 3.6 miles (5.8 km) north east of Grange-over-Sands and 10.6 miles (17.1 km) south west of Kendal, between the confluence of the River Kent estuary and the River Winster. It was created following the amalgamation of former civil parishes Witherslack and Meathop and Ulpha on 1 April 2015. In 2011 there was a total population of 653. It includes the villages of Witherslack and Meathop.

Witherslack is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Witherslack, Meathop and Ulpha, in the Westmorland and Furness district, in the south of Cumbria, England. It lies on the north eastern side of Morecambe Bay, England. The eastern side of the village borders Whitbarrow Scar with Yewbarrow, which is a small limestone hill, located in the centre of the village. In the 2001 census the former parish had a population of 482, increasing at the 2011 census to 499.Witherslack is quite scattered with four distinct areas. Townend, Mill Side, Beck Head and the school/church. Townend is traditionally considered the centre of the village and contains the local pub, The Derby Arms, and the Community Shop. Mill Side is the location of the old Mill and still contains the mill pond. Beck Head lies to the north of Mill Side and is where a small river emerges from the limestone escarpment adjacent to Whitbarrow. The area of the village with the Dean Barwick School and St. Paul's church lies to the west of Yewbarrow.

Witherslack Mosses are a fragmented wetland west of the Kent estuary in Cumbria, England, within the Lake District National Park. They consist of three raised bogs, the remnants of a formerly extensive, estuarine bog, which have been protected under the Habitats Directive as a Special Area of Conservation. Foulshaw Moss, with an area of 350 ha, the largest of the three. Meathop Moss, 82 ha, Nichols Moss, 7 ha as at 2022 in the process of expansionThe site was designated an SAC in 2005. The bogs were already individually protected as nature reserves in the care of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and, under UK legislation, as Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

St Paul's Church is in the village of Witherslack, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Kendal, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. The authors of the Buildings of England series describe it as "an almost perfect example of a plain Gothic church of that date, honest and unpretentious".

The River Winster is a river in the English county of Cumbria. The Winster was the boundary between the ancient counties of Lancashire and Westmorland. It has a relatively small catchment area; other streams flow parallel to it on either side. The Winster is about 20 km or 12 miles long, and rises about 2 km south of Bowness-on-Windermere, between the hamlets of Winster and Storrs (the latter is on Windermere) and follows a southerly course, flowing past the settlements of Ludderburn, Hartbarrow and Bowland Bridge, before it is joined by Arndale Beck at Bridge House. From there, the river continues through a valley between Whitbarrow and Cartmel Fell, flowing through Helton Tarn. It continues between the villages of Lindale and Meathop, and finally flows into the Kent estuary just downstream from Arnside. A former course of the river joined the Kent at Blawith Point, and as a result the peninsula of Holme Island often changed hands between Lancashire and Westmorland.

Arnside Viaduct is a viaduct carrying the Lancaster to Barrow railway line over the River Kent. Construction started in 1856, finished in 1857 and expanded to a two-track railway in 1863. It received a mjor upgrade and repair in the 21st century. It is approximately 505 meters long, with a total of 51 piers. It is situated where the River Kent disgorges into Morecambe Bay. It is located in the county of Cumbria but very close to the county of Lancashire border. It is cited as a major tourist attraction. As it goes over the River Kent, it is sometimes referred to as the Kent Viaduct. It is notable in that it was the first viaduct in the world to use water jetting to dig the piles in construction. It was substantially rebuilt and strengthened in 1915 to allow wartime supplies to and from Barrow.

The Arnside Bore is a tidal bore on the estuary of the River Kent in England, United Kingdom.The bore occurs at high tides, especially spring tides, where the incoming tide of Morecambe Bay narrows into the river estuary, opposite the village of Arnside.

Foulshaw Moss is a raised bog in Cumbria, England. In 1998 it was bought by Cumbria Wildlife Trust, which has worked to reverse damage caused to the bog by drainage and afforestation. It is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and as part of the Witherslack Mosses Special Area of Conservation along with two smaller bogs Meathop Moss and Nichols Moss.Raised bogs are rare in lowland Britain as many have been drained or used for planting trees, which by their presence extract water from the soil. Despite peat having been cut at the site in the past, this raised bog retains some of its dome of peat that is higher than the surrounding land. It has acid pools in the peat and hummocks of Sphagnum moss. Plants growing here include bog grasses, cottongrass, cranberry, heather, bog rosemary, bog myrtle and round-leaved sundew. There are damselflies and dragonflies, including the scarce emperor dragonfly and white-faced darter, and moths and butterflies, including the large heath. Birds such as osprey, snipe, moorhen and water rail breed here and buzzard, peregrine falcon, merlin and sparrowhawk search for prey.

Castle Head is a country house surrounded by 20 acres (81,000 m2) of grounds near to the seaside resort of Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria, England. It is run by Field Studies Council, and is a Grade II listed building.
