Gilfach Goch railway station served the village of Gilfach Goch, in the historical county of Glamorgan, Wales, from 1881 to 1930 on the Ely Valley Railway.

Gilfach Goch is a community, electoral ward and small former coal mining village mostly in the Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, south Wales, near the larger community of Tonyrefail. Some areas in the North Western part of the village lie within Bridgend County Borough Council. It is situated in the Cwm Ogwr Fach (Small Ogmore Valley) between the Cwm Ogwr Fawr (Large Ogmore Valley) to the west and the Cwm Rhondda (Rhondda Valley) to the east.

Tonyrefail School was an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school of approximately 1050 students that served the town of Tonyrefail and the surrounding areas. The school was situated on the north side of the town of Tonyrefail, on the B4278 near Bryngolau, around three miles south of Tonypandy and about four miles west of Pontypridd. It took its pupils from a cluster of six primary schools, Abercerdin, Cwmlai, Hendreforgan, Tonyrefail, Tref-y-Rhyg, and Williamstown, and worked with other schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf to offer a range of post-16 courses at its Sixth Form Centre. The school was closed in April 2019.

Brynna (Welsh: Brynnau) is a small village situated between Pencoed and Llanharan. It is located at the point where the borders of two Welsh county boroughs, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend, meet. Due to Brynna's proximity to the M4 motorway as well as both Pencoed and Llanharan railway stations, it offers residents easy access to most of South Wales. Brynna was originally called Brynna Gwynion but church records show that it was later shortened to Brynna from 1897 onwards.

Thomastown is a village and district of the large community of Tonyrefail, within Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales. It is located to the south of Tonyrefail within the 'Tonyrefail West' electoral ward, and falls within the Ely Valley along the A4119. Thomastown is also a community ward for elections to Tonyrefail & District Community Council.

Brynna a Wern Tarw is a Site of Special Scientific Interest located around Brynna in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Pencoed in Bridgend, south Wales. The Countryside Council for Wales describe the area as: "Brynna a Wern Tarw is of special interest for its extensive area of mixed, species-rich lowland grassland, including significant areas of marshy and dry neutral grassland. Smaller areas of other habitats including broadleaved woodland and heath add to the interest. The site also provides habitat for the Marsh Fritillary butterfly."

Coed Ely railway station served the portion of the Ely Valley around the mining communities of Thomastown and Coed-Ely in South Wales, between 1925 and 1958.

Mynydd y Gaer is a 295-metre-high hill in Bridgend County Borough in South Wales. The summit is crowned by a trig point. It is reputed to be the site of Caradoc's fortress who in the first century AD resisted the Roman invasion of the Silures territories around 48-50 AD. There is a Caer Caradoc tumulus at the eastern end of the mynydd which is still displayed on the OS maps that is, according to local legend, the burial place of Caradoc. Nearby are the burial mounds of Meurig and Athwr II who resisted the Saxons in the 6th century.

Tonyrefail is a village and community in the Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough, Wales. It is situated at the head of the River Ely; 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of Llantrisant, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from Trebanog and about 2 miles (3.2 km) from Williamstown. During the second half of the 19th century, when coal and steel became synonymous with the South Wales Valleys, Tonyrefail evolved from being a rural hamlet to an industrial village. The population at the 2001 census was 11,035.
