Dade Battlefield Historic State Park

The Dade battle (often called the Dade massacre) was an 1835 military defeat for the United States Army. The U.S. was attempting to force the Seminoles to move away from their land in Florida and relocate to Indian Territory (in what would become Oklahoma). Amidst a war between the Government of the United States and the Seminole two U.S. Army companies numbering 103 men under the command of Major Francis L. Dade were ambushed by approximately 180 Seminole warriors as they marched from Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay to reinforce Fort King in Ocala. Only three U.S. soldiers survived the attack, and one died of his wounds the following day. The battle sparked the Second Seminole War, which ended in 1842. By that time, most Seminoles had surrendered and been transported out of Florida while a smaller portion had moved well south to the edges of the Everglades. There was no formal treaty ending the conflict.

The Thomas R. Pierce House (also known as the Pierce Hotel) is a historic house in Bushnell, Florida. It is locally significant as an outstanding example of vernacular architecture, and the only historic hotel or boarding house from this period remaining in Bushnell.

The Sumter County Courthouse, built in 1912–1914, is an historic courthouse building located in Bushnell, Florida. The total costs of construction for the courthouse were $56,000. It was designed by Atlanta-based architect William Augustus Edwards who designed one other courthouse in Florida, two in Georgia and nine in South Carolina as well as academic buildings at 12 institutions in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. He designed most of the original buildings on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. In 1989, The Sumter County Courthouse was listed in A Guide to Florida's Historic Architecture, published by the University of Florida Press.There is now a much larger Sumter County Judicial Building nearby which bears a striking resemblance to the 1912-1914 courthouse because it incorporates much of its architectural features in its central facade.On November 26, 2013, Sumter County officials unveiled renovations to the Sumter County Courthouse including refinished walls, doors, new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing fixtures, fire protection, technological improvements and accessibility upgrades. The cost of the renovations was approximated at $8 million.

A new area has opened at the northeast end of Lake Panasoffkee.

Wahoo is an unincorporated community in Sumter County, Florida, United States. First settled by the Timucua, the area was eventually settled by the Seminoles. During the Second Seminole War, Wahoo and the surrounding area served as shelter to the Seminoles and as the site of several skirmishes. After the war, white settlers migrated to the area and established a thriving town. Today, the rural community is connected to the nearby town of Bushnell. Wahoo is home to a middle-aged population whose ancestry mainly hails from Europe. As for the battle site, it is protected by the state of Florida for ecological purposes.

The Sumter Correctional Institution is a state prison for men located in Bushnell, Sumter County, Florida, owned and operated by the Florida Department of Corrections. This facility has a mix of security levels, including minimum, medium, and close, and houses both adult male and young male offenders. Sumter first opened in 1965 and has a maximum capacity of 1639 prisoners. Sumter Correctional Institution is the location of the state's only Basic Training Unit for Youthful Offenders in the Department of Corrections. After completing the 120 day program with a heavy course load of drill practice, education, physical training and a highly regimented daily schedule inmates are released to serve the remainder of their sentence on probation the day of graduation. An alleged sexual assault against a 17-year-old inmate by six other prisoners in July 2013 triggered a federal lawsuit against the institution.

The Wild Cow Prairie Cemetery is located in Sumter County, Florida near Bushnell, Florida.
