Marton, Shropshire

Wotherton is a hamlet in west Shropshire, close to the Welsh border. It is in the civil parish of Chirbury with Brompton. Its name, mentioned as a manor in Domesday means, roughly, "settlement at a woodland ford"; the road through the village crosses a small stream.The Wotherton Barytes Mine operated here until 1911.

Rorrington is a hamlet in west Shropshire, England. It is in the civil parish of Chirbury with Brompton. Four lanes lead into the hamlet: from Marton in the north, Meadowtown in the east, Middleton in the south, and Wotherton in the west.National Cycle Route 44 passes through the hamlet.

Stockton is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. It forms part of the civil parish of Chirbury with Brompton and is just on the English side of the Wales-England border. The River Camlad flows to the south and there was once a mill (Stockton Mill). The elevation of the hamlet is 102 metres (335 ft) above sea level.

According to some early medieval sources, the siege of Exeter or siege of Caer-Uisc was a military conflict that took place in or around 630 CE, between the Mercians, led by Penda of Mercia, and the Britons occupying Caer-Uisc (Exeter) in the kingdom of Dumnonia. Penda is said to have laid siege to the town until the exiled British High King Cadwallon of Gwynedd, arrived to confront him. An alliance between British and Mercian forces followed, secured by Cadwallon's marriage to Alcfrith, Penda's sister, and they marched north to face the armies of Northumbria (who were occupying Gwynedd) at the Battle of Cefn Digoll. The Flores Historiarum (mistakenly attributed to Matthew of Westminster) recalls that the Britons were still in possession of Exeter in 632, when it was bravely defended against Penda of Mercia until relieved by Cadwallon, who engaged and defeated the Mercians with great slaughter. Geoffrey of Monmouth also paints a colourful account of the siege in his pseudo-historic Historia Regum Britanniae, saying Cadwallon made an alliance with the British nobility. Since the 19th century, historians have expressed doubts about the existence of this conflict. For instance in 1861, George Oliver wrote: If, in the silence of the Saxon Chronicle, we may believe Matthew of Westminster in his 'Flores Historiarum', we must state that about this time Exeter was besieged by Penda... and in 1887 Edward Augustus Freeman could say: There is indeed a wild tale of Geoffrey of Monmouth, repeated by some English chroniclers, which seems to be the Vespasian legend repeated with fresh names. The heathen Penda besieges Exeter in the year 634, and the siege is raised by the Briton Cadwalla. If this story is worth anything, it simply points to Caerwisc as being still a British city in the second quarter of the seventh century.

Long Mountain (Welsh: Cefn Digoll) is a hill straddling the boundary between Powys (Wales) and Shropshire (England) to the east of Welshpool though the summit at 408 metres (1,339 feet) at Beacon Ring (grid reference SJ265058) is within Wales. Long Mountain is a Marilyn (a hill with topographic prominence of at least 150 metres), having a prominence of 305 metres (1,000 feet).

The Battle of Cefn Digoll, also known as the Battle of the Long Mynd was a battle fought in 630 at Long Mountain near Welshpool in modern-day Wales. The battle was fought between the Northumbrian army of King Edwin of Northumbria and an anti-Northumbrian alliance between King Cadwallon of Gwynedd and Penda of Mercia.: 71  The battle ended the Northumbrian domination of Gwynedd, and preceded a Welsh campaign into Northumbria, which led to Edwin's death at the Battle of Hatfield Chase.

Middleton is a scattered settlement in Shropshire with a chapel (Holy Trinity) and a former schoolhouse. It was once much more populated but went into decline once mining ended in the area. It is situated in the civil parish of Chirbury with Brompton, in the west of the county. Middleton is a parish ward within that parish, returning 3 councillors. Historically it was a township of the hundred of Chirbury. The ecclesiastical parish is known as Middleton-in-Chirbury.To the north is the hamlet of Rorrington, to the south the small village of Priestweston, both also in the parish of Chirbury with Brompton.

Trelystan is a remote parish and township on the border of the historic county of Montgomeryshire with Shropshire. Trelystan now forms part of the community of Forden, Leighton and Trelystan in Powys. Trelystan was a chapel of ease within the parish of Worthen and it also served the township of Leighton. In some old sources the parish is also referred to as Wolston Mynd.

Meadowtown is a hamlet in west Shropshire, England, in the civil parish of Worthen with Shelve. Neighbouring hamlets include Marton, Ox Wood, Crest Wood, and Rorrington. Meadowtown contains a Site of Special Scientific Interest according to the U.K. government. A long-disused quarry in the hamlet is "a well known fossil collecting locality and has yielded typical and distinctive trilobites including Oxygiocarella debuchi, Marrolithus craticulatus, Lloydolithus lloydii and Oxyginus cordensis novenarius. Species of the brachiopod genus Dalmanella and occasional sponge spicules also occur."Meadowtown is also home to "Mammoth", a cow made famous on the internet involving a UK milk-price dispute in 2017.

The Long Mountain transmitting station is sited on a 400 metres (1,300 ft) ridge about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) east of Welshpool in Powys, Mid Wales and has been broadcasting UHF terrestrial TV and VHF FM radio services since the late 1970s. The site has a self-supporting 170' (52 metre) high lattice steel mast and was fed with an SHF link from Blaenplwyf via Llangurig. Despite not taking its signal off-air, it was originally classed as a 625-line UHF TV relay of Blaenplwyf. The transmitter originally radiated 1 kW providing TV and radio to an area including Newtown and Oswestry. Being only 400 metres (1,300 ft) from the England/Wales border, coverage extended to several towns in England – Shrewsbury included.Long Mountain became re-classed as main transmitter in its own right (albeit a very low power one) with the advent of digital terrestrial TV from the site on 4 November 2009. In addition to this, it currently transmits FM radio and a single multiplex of DAB Digital radio.

Priestweston (or Priest Weston) is a small village in the civil parish of Chirbury with Brompton, Shropshire, England, lying in the Welsh Marches. Its name is based on the Old English for "western settlement (tun)", with the affix priest in reference to the estate of the Prior of Chirbury at Weston Parva. It was mentioned in Domesday, and later became part of the possessions of the Botterell family. The village is located near to the English-Welsh border, at the foot of Corndon Hill. Due to a quirk of the border geography in the area of Corndon Hill, the nearest village in Wales, White Grit, lies to the east of Priestweston. Second World War Victoria Cross winner John Brunt was born there in 1922 and his family lived there before moving to near Whittington some six years later. An outdoor memorial plaque to his memory was put up in the village in May 2004.The village church at Middleton-in-Chirbury is located a mile from Priestweston. A megalithic stone circle known as Mitchell's Fold is located within Shropshire on nearby Stapeley Hill, and there are also remains of a second circle, known as the Whetstones, a short distance to the east over the Welsh border in Montgomeryshire. There is also a traditional pub, The Miner's Arms. National Cycle Route 44 passes through the village.
