St Michael and All Angels Church is an Anglican church in the village of Tongwynlais, South Wales, serving the parish of the same name. It is a Grade II listed building.

The ESPON Cardiff–South Wales Valleys metropolitan area was a metropolitan area used by the European Spatial Planning Observation Network (ESPON) of the European Union. The area included parts of south-east Wales, specifically covering the morphological urban areas of the cities of Cardiff and Newport, and of the towns of Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Bridgend and Ebbw Vale, in the South Wales Valleys. It covers the preserved counties of Gwent and South Glamorgan. In a 2007 report, ESPON stated it had a population of 1.097 million, making it the largest and only ESPON metropolitan area in Wales, with the next largest being centred on the city of Swansea and its urban area. The ESPON defined the "Cardiff and South Wales valleys metropolitan area" by 2007, to cover the following three types of subdivision: The previous Cardiff (272,000) and Newport (116,000) areas classed under ESPON 1.1.1 The corresponding morphological urban areas of Cardiff, Newport, Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Bridgend, and Ebbw Vale. The metropolitan area includes areas within the then NUTS 3 statistical regions of Central Valleys (Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf), Gwent Valleys (Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Torfaen), Bridgend–Neath Port Talbot, Monmouthshire–Newport, and Cardiff–Vale of Glamorgan.

Castell Coch Woodlands and Road Section is a Site of Special Scientific Interest to the north of Cardiff, Wales, significant for both its biological and geological interest. The SSSI (located at grid reference ST131827) covers an area of 17 hectares (42 acres) around the Victorian gothic castle of Castell Coch, 5 miles, 8 km north-west of Cardiff. The steep south and west facing slopes have extensive beech woodlands - thought to be the furthest west that such woods occur. The mature beech woodland supports a ground flora that reflects the ancient nature of the woodland, with bird's-nest orchid, butterfly orchid, dog's mercury, ramsons and sanicle locally abundant.Geologically, the steep slopes reveal a sequence of rock bedding from the Devonian Old Red Sandstone into the Carboniferous Limestone. Unlike other exposures in South Wales, where the coal measures intervene, the lowest carboniferous limestone beds directly onto the older Devonian rocks. Much of the SSSI is open for public access, and adjoins the large area of Forestry Commission woodland known as Fforest Fawr.

Castell Coch (Welsh for 'Red Castle'; Welsh pronunciation: [ˈkas.tɛɬ koːχ]) is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais in South Wales. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans after 1081 to protect the newly conquered town of Cardiff and control the route along the Taff Gorge. Abandoned shortly afterwards, the castle's earth motte was reused by Gilbert de Clare as the basis for a new stone fortification, which he built between 1267 and 1277 to control his freshly annexed Welsh lands. This castle may have been destroyed in the native Welsh rebellion of 1314. In 1760, the castle ruins were acquired by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, as part of a marriage settlement that brought the family vast estates in South Wales. John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, inherited the castle in 1848. One of Britain's wealthiest men, with interests in architecture and antiquarian studies, he employed the architect William Burges to rebuild the castle, "as a country residence for occasional occupation in the summer", using the medieval remains as a basis for the design. Burges rebuilt the outside of the castle between 1875 and 1879, before turning to the interior; he died in 1881 and the work was finished by Burges's remaining team in 1891. Bute reintroduced commercial viticulture into Britain, planting a vineyard just below the castle, and wine production continued until the First World War. He made little use of his new retreat, and in 1950 his grandson, the 5th Marquess of Bute, placed it into the care of the state. It is now controlled by the Welsh heritage agency Cadw. Castell Coch's external features and the High Victorian interiors led the historian David McLees to describe it as "one of the greatest Victorian triumphs of architectural composition." The exterior, based on 19th-century studies by the antiquarian George Clark, is relatively authentic in style, although its three stone towers were adapted by Burges to present a dramatic silhouette, closer in design to mainland European castles such as Chillon than native British fortifications. The interiors were elaborately decorated, with specially designed furniture and fittings; the designs include extensive use of symbolism drawing on classical and legendary themes. Joseph Mordaunt Crook wrote that the castle represented "the learned dream world of a great patron and his favourite architect, recreating from a heap of rubble a fairy-tale castle which seems almost to have materialised from the margins of a medieval manuscript."The surrounding Castell Coch beech woods contain rare plant species and unusual geological features and are protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Morganstown Castle Mound, also known as Morganstown Motte, is a medieval motte in the community of Morganstown in Cardiff, Wales, which is a scheduled monument.

The Glamorganshire Canal local nature reserve is a nature reserve in Whitchurch, Cardiff, Wales. Formed in 1967, it comprises a disused section of the Glamorganshire Canal (constructed 1794), the Long Wood (designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and an area of the flood plain of the River Taff. The reserve is also known as Forest Farm, and the old farm buildings are used to support the reserve.The water in the canal is relatively clean for an ex-industrial area, and supports several species of waterbirds, including kingfishers and herons. It is one of the few British nest sites of the Eurasian bittern. The Long Wood is chiefly oak and beech, with several trees over 200 years old.In 1992 the reserve was included in the newly declared Forest Farm Country Park which covered approximately 150 acres (60 ha).The reserve is supported by the Friends of Forest Farm, who organise educational events and support Cardiff Council in the protection and maintenance of the nature reserve.

Radyr Hydro Scheme is a 400kW small-scale hydroelectric station located in Radyr, Cardiff, Wales.The scheme makes use of the large height difference created by Radyr Weir to push water through two 4-metre-wide (13 ft), 10-metre-long (33 ft) Archimedean screw turbines.The scheme was constructed in 2015 by Dawnus, being designed by Renewables First and operated by Cardiff Council.Cardiff Council built the scheme to supply renewable electricity as part of a plan to lower carbon emissions in order to help Cardiff become a "one planet city" by 2050.
