Île Sainte-Marguerite

The Lérins Islands (in French: les Îles de Lérins, pronounced [lɛz‿il də leʁɛ̃s]) are a group of four Mediterranean islands off the French Riviera, in Cannes. The two largest islands in this group are the Île Sainte-Marguerite and the Île Saint-Honorat. The smaller Îlot Saint-Ferréol and Îlot de la Tradelière are uninhabited. Administratively, the islands belong to the commune of Cannes. The islands are first known to have been inhabited during Roman times. The Île de Saint-Honorat bears the name of the founder of the monastery of Lérins, Saint Honoratus. It was founded around the year 410. According to tradition, Saint Patrick, patron of Ireland, studied there in the fifth century. Around 500, the community was led by Porcarius I. Around 732, the Abbot Porcarius II was killed during a Saracen raid. In 1047 the islands were raided by pirates from Andalusia. Thereafter, a fortified monastery was built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. The monastic community today lives in a monastery built during the nineteenth century. The Île Sainte-Marguerite held a fortress where the Man in the Iron Mask was held captive for a time. In 1707 the Lérins were occupied by the English navy, under the command of Sir Cloudesley Shovell. This was done in order to block the military port of Toulon to help the army of Victor Amadeus II Duke of Savoy and his cousin Eugene besiege that city. Under the French Revolution, the Île Sainte-Marguerite and the Île Saint-Honorat were renamed the Île Marat and the Île Lepeletier, after secular martyrs.

The Île Saint-Honorat is the second largest of the Lérins Islands, about 1.6 kilometres (1 mi) off shore from the French Riviera town of Cannes. The island is approximately 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) in length (East to West) and 400 metres (1,300 ft) wide. Since the fifth century, the island has been home to a community of monks.

Lérins Abbey (pronounced [leʁɛ̃]) is a Cistercian monastery on the island of Saint-Honorat, one of the Lérins Islands, on the French Riviera, with an active monastic community. There has been a monastic community there since the 5th century. The construction of the current monastery buildings began around 1073. Today the monks cultivate vineyards and produce wine and liqueur.

Monastère fortifié de l'abbaye de Lérins is a building on Île Saint-Honorat in the Bay of Cannes in the Alpes-Maritimes of France. Construction began in the late 11th century on the southern coast to protect the island and Lérins Abbey. It was listed as a Monument historique in 1840.

St. Michael the Archangel Church, Cannes is an Eastern Orthodox church in Cannes, France (40 Boulevard Alexandre III). It was built in 1894. The parish of the church has been, for most of its history, under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox churches in Western Europe, an exarchate of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople from 1931 until November 2018; in September 2019, the parish switched to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate.

The Hôtel Martinez is an art deco hotel on the Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes. It was opened on 20 February 1929 by Emmanuel Michele Martinez, son of Baron Giovanni Martinez and Giuseppa Labiso Costanza, members of a noble Italian family of Spanish origins from Palermo. Karan Singh the crown prince of Jammu and Kashmir was born there in 1931.

The Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel is a historic 332-room luxury hotel opened in 1911, located at 58 La Croisette in Cannes on the French Riviera. It is famous for hosting movie stars from around the world during the annual Film Festival. Following major renovations, it reopened on 13 March 2023.

The Promenade de la Croisette (French: [pʁɔm(ə)nad də la kʁwazɛt]), or Boulevard de la Croisette, is a prominent road in Cannes, France. It stretches along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea and is about 2 km long. The Croisette is known for the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the Cannes Film Festival is held. Many expensive shops, restaurants, and hotels (such as the Carlton, Majestic, JW Marriott Cannes, and Martinez) line the road. It goes completely along the coastline of Cannes. The Croisette is listed in the cultural heritage general inventory of France.

The château de l'Horizon is a Modernist villa that was constructed in 1932 by the American architect Barry Dierks for the actress Maxine Elliott. The villa is located on shores of the Golfe-Juan at Vallauris. The residence has received a number of distinguished guests, including Sir Winston Churchill, who was a regular guest between 1934 and 1940. Prince Ali Khan purchased the villa in 1948 and his marriage to Rita Hayworth was celebrated here the following year.

The JW Marriott Cannes is a five star hotel on the Croisette in Cannes. It was built in 1992 as the Noga Hilton by hotel magnate Nessim Gaon, and was renamed the Palais Stéphanie in 2007 when it passed from Hilton to Accor. It was renamed again in 2011, becoming a JW Marriott. It is located between the Carlton, Le Martinez and Le Majestic. In 1993, Steelman Partners designed the casino located in the hotel. The casino was known as Casino Riviera.

The canton of Cannes-2 is an administrative division of the Alpes-Maritimes department, southeastern France. It was created at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Cannes.It consists of the following communes: Cannes (partly)

The Hotel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes is a historic luxury hotel on the Croisette in Cannes, built in 1926. It belongs to the Lucien Barrière group. It is a traditional hotel for film stars attending the Cannes Festival.
