Lützerath (German pronunciation: [ˈlʏt͜səʁaːt] ) was a hamlet in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Aachen and Düsseldorf. In 2013, the Federal Constitutional Court ruled in favour of the expansion of the Garzweiler surface mine; in January 2023, Lützerath was eradicated to make way for the opencast mining of Garzweiler II ; it will eventually be replaced with a lake. A farmer contested the plans which were approved by the higher administrative court in Münster. Climate activists moved to the village, squatting on empty farms and occupying treehouses. In an attempt to save the village, a campaign called "Lützerath lebt" (Lützerath lives) was started. In October 2022, the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia announced that RWE would phase out coal mining in the region by 2030, but Lützerath would still be demolished. The eviction occurred in January 2023.

Beckrath is a village in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 507 kilometres (315 mi) west of Berlin and 9.9 kilometres (6.2 mi) south of Mönchengladbach.

Schloss Wickrath is a moated castle complex in Wickrath. The castle is located on the river Niers. The original castle, the so-called Chateau de Wyckradt, was demolished in 1859 by the Prussian administration. The ensemble of buildings in the park, the baroque west and east wing and the so-called Landstallmeisterhaus, the residence of the former stud master, which was built in 1875, is nowadays called "Schloss Wickrath". It was built between 1746 and 1772 by count Wilhelm Otto Friedrich von Quadt. The park has the shape of a coronet of a count of the Holy Roman Empire. In 2002 the castle was part of Euroga2002.

The Lordship of Wickrath (sometimes spelled "Wykradt") was a lordship of the Holy Roman Empire located in western North Rhine-Westphalia around the castle of Wickrath. The lordship was bordered by Jülich to the south, west and north, and the Archbishopric of Cologne or Highbishoprick of Coln to the east. Wickrath became an immediate lordship in 1488 after it passed to the Knights of Hompesch. It was located in the Lower Rhenish-Westphalian Circle, and from 1752 it was an Imperial Estate with a vote in the Bench of Counts of Westphalia.

The Church of St. Lambertus (German: Pfarrkirche St. Lambertus), known locally as the Immerather Dom (meaning "Cathedral of Immerath"), was a Roman Catholic parish church in the village of Immerath, Erkelenz in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. A church dedicated to Saint Lambert of Maastricht had existed on the site since at least the 12th century, being rebuilt and enlarged a number of times before being demolished in 1888. It was replaced by Romanesque Revival church building, which was constructed between 1888 and 1891 to designs of Erasmus Schüller. The church was deconsecrated in 2013, and it was demolished on 9 January 2018, despite being designated a heritage monument. The demolition was part of the destruction of the entire village of Immerath in order to make way for the Garzweiler surface mine. A new smaller church with the same dedication was built as its replacement in Immerath-Neu between 2013 and 2015.

Odenkirchen is a former town in Germany, presently part of the city Mönchengladbach. It is situated on the river Niers, 21 miles by rail south-west of Düsseldorf. It has a railway station (Rheydt-Odenkirchen), on the line from Mönchengladbach to Grevenbroich and Cologne. Pop. (2000) 19,993. Odenkirchen castle was the seat of the lords of Odenkirchen from the 12th century. From 1794 to 1814, Odenkirchen was part of the French Roer département, from 1815 to 1918 part of the Kingdom of Prussia (Province of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, Rhine Province). It was given city rights in 1856. In 1929, it was incorporated into Gladbach-Rheydt, since 1975 part of Mönchengladbach. Odenkirchen remained a separate district within Mönchengladbach until 2009, when it was merged into the larger Mönchengladbach Süd city district. The name Odenkirchen may derive from the Low German for either "wooden church" or "old church". Alternatively it may be from the given name Odo. Odenkirchen was in use as a locational surname from at least the 18th century (anglicized as Odenkirk in the United States from the early 19th century).

The Battle of Dahlen was fought on April 23, 1568, between a Dutch rebel army led by Jean de Montigny, Lord of Villers, and a Spanish army commanded by Sancho Dávila y Daza. As a part of William of Orange's planned invasion, the Dutch rebels were trying to conquer the town of Roermond when the arrival of the Spanish force compelled them to withdraw. Dávila pursued the retreating force and inflicted a defeat upon Villers near the small town of Dahlen (today known as Rheindahlen). The survivors of this encounter sought refuge under the walls of Dahlen, where the Spanish infantry finally defeated them. This battle is sometimes considered the official start of the Eighty Years' War.

Hochneukirch is a station in Jüchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located on the Cologne–Mönchengladbach railway and the closed Mönchengladbach–Stolberg railway.

Rheydt-Odenkirchen is a station in the Mönchengladbach suburb of Odenkirchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Rheydter Höhe is a Trümmerberg in the Mönchengladbach district of Pongs in the south of the city. Locally the hill, which is made of rubble, is known as Monte Clamotte ("Mount Rubble") or Rheydter Müllberg (the "Rheydt Rubbish Tip"). The plateau of the small hill is 133 m above NN high, making it the highest point in the borough. Measuring 64 m from foot to summit, it is also the highest Trümmerberg in Germany. The Rheydter Höhe ("Rheydt Hill") was created in 1945 from rubble left behind by the bombing of the towns of Mönchengladbach and Rheydt, which left 65% of the two towns in ruins. During the 1950s, great quantities of domestic rubbish were dumped on the Trümmerberg. In order to enable plants and trees to grown, a layer of humus, between one and two metres thick, laid over the household rubbish. During the 1990s, this resulted in poison gas emissions from the rubble, of which nothing can be seen today. However, about 30 metres below the plateau, which doubles as a viewing point, individual pieces of plastic bags can be seen on the sides of the footpath, which have been exposed by rainwater over time. At the northern foot of the Trümmerberg is a water play park, a pond and the Rheydt municipal forest with barbecue sites, a minigolf course, a café and facilities for other activities. The road of Dahlener Straße (one of the main transport axes of the town, linking Rheydt with Rheindahlen) and the A 61 motorway run south and west of the Rheydter Höhe respectively.

Rheindahlen (called Dalen from the Early Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period around 1700, and Dahlen until 1878) is a town in the western and largest borough of the city of Mönchengladbach in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since the reorganisation of Monchengladbach's boroughs (Stadtbezirke) on 22 October 2009 Rheindahlen has been part of Mönchengladbach West. From the granting of Nideggen town rights in 1354 until the incorporation of the mayoralty of Rheindahlen into M.-Gladbach on 30 June 1921, the place was an independent town. In 1878, the town was renamed from Dahlen to Rheindahlen in the Prussian Province of Düsseldorf by order of Emperor William I. Its renaming was primarily for postal reasons in order to avoid confusing the Dahlen in the Rhine Province with the municipality of Dahlen in Saxony within the North German Postal Zone. Its old name linguistically meant Delle or "hollow", which refers to the location of the village in a depression.
