Flixton, Lothingland

Mutford and Lothingland was a hundred of Suffolk, with an area of 33,368 acres (135.04 km2). Lowestoft Ness, the most easterly point of Great Britain fell within its bounds. Мutford and Lothingland Hundred formed the north-eastern corner of Suffolk. Around five miles (8.0 km) wide, but fifteen miles (24 km) from north to south it was bounded by Norfolk to the north and west, and the North Sea to the east, other than the strip of land occupied by Great Yarmouth. Its border with Norfolk was formed by the River Waveney as it bends north on its final approaches to the sea, and Breydon Water. It was separated to the south by the appropriately named Hundred River from the hundreds of Wangford and Blything. The parishes of Belton with Browston, Bradwell, Burgh Castle and Hopton-on-Sea, historically in Suffolk, were moved to Great Yarmouth district in Norfolk in 1974 following the changes of the Local Government Act 1972.The southern part of the hundred was formerly the Half Hundred of Mutford, comprising the parishes of Barnby, Carlton Colville, Gisleham, Kessingland, Kirkley, Mutford, Pakefield, and Rushmere. It was separated from Lothingland by Oulton Broad and Lake Lothing through which the River Waveney formerly flowed to reach the sea. The northern Half Hundred of Lothingland was merged with that of Mutford in 1763.Listed as Ludingaland in the Domesday Book, Lothingland is named after Lake Lothing, which in turn probably refers to a tribe or family named Luthings. The name Mutford, taken from the village of the same name, may mean "ford near the meeting of the streams", from the Anglo-Saxon mutha meaning mouth of a river. If this is correct, the ford in question is presumably that where a stream enters the Hundred River in the grounds of Mutford Hall.

Mutford and Lothingland Rural District was a rural district within the administrative county of East Suffolk between 1894 and 1934. It was created out of the earlier Mutford and Lothingland rural sanitary district. It was named after the historic hundred of Mutford and Lothingland, whose boundaries it closely matched. In 1904 a new Oulton Broad Urban District was created out of parts of Carlton Colville and Oulton parishes. Oulton Broad UD was absorbed by the Municipal Borough of Lowestoft in 1919. In 1934, under a County Review Order, Mutford and Lothingland Rural District was abolished and its parishes transferred to the new Lothingland Rural District, apart from Gunton and some part parishes which were added to Lowestoft MB. In 1974 the area was divided between the new districts of Great Yarmouth (in Norfolk) and Waveney in Suffolk.

HM Prison Blundeston was a Category C men's prison, located in the Village of Blundeston in Suffolk, England. The prison was operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service, and closed in January 2014.

Oulton is a civil parish on the western edge of the town of Lowestoft in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is in the East Suffolk district. The eastern part of the parish forms part of the suburbs of Lowestoft, whilst the western section extends into The Broads national park, reaching the River Waveney and Oulton Dyke.At the 2011 United Kingdom census the parish had an estimated population of 4,020. It borders the Suffolk parishes of Blundeston, Carlton Colville, Corton, Flixton, Lowestoft and Oulton Broad and the Norfolk parish of Burgh St Peter across the River Waveney.The B1074 Lowestoft to Somerleyton road passes through the parish, as do the A117 and B1375 roads running north to the A47 road. The Lowestoft to Norwich railway line passes through the western part of the parish, running through areas of marshland near to the River Waveney. The nearest railway station is Oulton Broad North.

Blundeston is a village and civil parish in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north-west of Lowestoft, 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Great Yarmouth and around 1.75 miles (2.82 km) inland from the North Sea coast. It is part of the area known as Lothingland in the East Suffolk district. Blundeston Prison was located on the southern edge of the village but closed in early 2014.The parish had a population of 1,637 at the 2011 United Kingdom census. It extends from the River Waveney, which marks the county border with Norfolk, in the west to the A47 road in the east. It borders the Suffolk parishes of Corton, Flixton, Oulton, Lound and Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet as well as the Norfolk parish of Burgh St Peter across the Waveney. The parish council is operated jointly with the sparsely populated parish of Flixton to the south.The village is clustered in the centre of the parish. The Lowestoft to Norwich railway line crosses the western section of the parish, with the nearest station at Somerleyton railway station. This part of the parish consists of a series of drainage marshes in the floodplain of the Waveney. The B1075 Lowestoft to Somerleyton road crosses the parish.

Lothingland is an area in the English counties of Suffolk and Norfolk on the North Sea coast. It is bound by the River Yare and Breydon Water to the north, the River Waveney to the west and Oulton Broad to the south, and includes the parts of Lowestoft north of Lake Lothing. In antiquity the River Waveney flowed to the sea through Oulton Broad and Lake Lothing, reaching the sea at Lowestoft, meaning that together with the mouth of the River Yare Lothingland was historically an island, and was indeed known as the Island of Lothingland. When the Waveney deviated its course on its current sharp turn to the north this was no longer the case. In 1833 the Norwich and Lowestoft Navigation opened for sea-borne vessels to pass through Oulton Broad and Lake Lothing, the area once again effectively became an island.Historically it formed a half-hundred, which was incorporated into Mutford to form Mutford and Lothingland. A Lothingland Rural District (excluding Lowestoft) in the former county of East Suffolk, existed until 1974. The area was all within the historic county of Suffolk until boundaries were redrawn in 1974 and some of the area was transferred to Norfolk. Local government in Lothingland is now split between the borough of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk and East Suffolk District in Suffolk. There is a ward within East Suffolk named Lothingland; the population of the ward taken at the 2011 census was 5,479.Lothingland is also the name of a deanery in the Diocese of Norwich.

South Broads Lifeboat Station was an RNLI operated lifeboat station located on Oulton Broad in the town of Lowestoft in the English county of Suffolk. The station operated between 2001 and 2011. The station covered the southern area of The Broads network, an area of over 100 square miles (260 km2) of inland waterways including the River Waveney. The station performed 194 rescues.

Oulton Broad North railway station (originally opened as Mutford and later known as Oulton Broad (Mutford) and Oulton Broad) is on the Wherry Lines in the east of England, and is one of two stations serving Oulton Broad, Suffolk. The other is Oulton Broad South on the East Suffolk Line. Oulton Broad North is 22 miles 4 chains (35.5 km) down the line from Norwich on the route to Lowestoft. The East Suffolk Line runs between Lowestoft and Ipswich. The station building dates from the station's opening in 1847. Today, the station is managed by Greater Anglia, which also operates all trains that call but is unstaffed. The tracks from Lowestoft split into two separate lines to Norwich and Ipswich just before Oulton Broad North. Trains to Ipswich pass Oulton Broad North closely, but there has never been a platform for them to call there. The Ipswich trains call at Oulton Broad South, which is about three-quarters of a mile by road to the south.

Oulton Broad refers to both the lake and the suburb of Lowestoft in the English county of Suffolk. The suburb is located 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the centre of Lowestoft. It became a civil parish in 2017. It had an estimated population of 10,338 at the 2011 United Kingdom census.

Benjamin Britten Academy (formerly The Benjamin Britten High School) is a coeducational secondary school located in the northern outskirts of Lowestoft, Suffolk, England. It caters for scholars aged 11 to 18. It is also home to the Suffolk Centre of Excellence in Mathematics. The school was named after the Lowestoft-born composer Benjamin Britten and was designed as he approached his death in 1974. Its modernist design reflected the style of his compositions and remains distinctive in its layout and intended black and white colour scheme. The school was completed in 1979.In September 2011 the school became an 11 to 16 school as part of the reorganisation of schools in Lowestoft by Suffolk County Council. Pupils in years 7 and 8 joined the school after the closure of eight middle schools in Lowestoft. The opening of Lowestoft Sixth Form College also meant that the school lost its role in the Lowestoft 6th consortium, which had operated as a shared sixth form between the high schools in the town. Previously a Local Authority school administered by Suffolk County Council, in May 2016, the Benjamin Britten High School was converted to academy status. It was granted 11-18 Sixth Form status, as part of the Hartismere family of schools. The school continues to coordinate with Suffolk County Council for admissions. The academy was awarded a rating of 'good' from Ofsted in 2019.

Akethorpe, or Akethorp, was an English village thought to have been located in what is now part of the Suffolk town of Lowestoft. The village was described in the Domesday Book as being home to four households in the Hundred of Lothingland. It formed part of the King's holding in 1086, having been held by Aelmer the Priest in 1066.The manor of Akethorp was purchased by Magdalen College, Oxford in 1478. Earthworks though to be part of the manorial boundary have been surveyed in the area. A road in modern Lowestoft is named Akethorpe Way.
