Burncoose

Redruth Rural District was a local government division of Cornwall in England, UK, between 1894 and 1934. Established under the Local Government Act 1894, the rural district was abolished in 1934 to create Camborne–Redruth Urban District and Kerrier Rural District, as well as enlarging Truro Rural District and West Penwith Rural District.

Gwennap (Standard Written Form: Lannwenep (village), Pluw Wenep (parish)) is a village and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is about five miles (8 km) southeast of Redruth. Hamlets of Burncoose, Comford, Coombe, Crofthandy, Cusgarne, Fernsplatt, Frogpool, Hick's Mill, Tresamble and United Downs lie in the parish, as does Little Beside country house. In the 18th and early 19th centuries Gwennap parish was the richest copper mining district in Cornwall, and was called the "richest square mile in the Old World". It is near the course of the Great County Adit which was constructed to drain mines in the area including several of the local once-famous mines such as Consolidated Mines, Poldice mine and Wheal Busy. Today it forms part of area A6i (the Gwennap Mining District) of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. It lends its name to Gwennap Pit, where John Wesley preached eighteen times between 1762 and 1789, although Gwennap Pit is about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) to the northwest, at the hamlet of Busveal near St Day. The pit was caused by mining subsidence in the mid-18th century. After Wesley's death the local people turned the pit into a regular circular shape with turf seats. The location of the pit has been described as being used for Cornish wrestling tournaments prior to its transformation.

Comford is a small settlement in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is approximately 3 miles (5 km) southeast of Redruth on the A393 road and very close to Gwennap.

United Downs is a hamlet in the parish of Gwennap, Cornwall, England, UK.The hamlet is the site of the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power project, using heat from the earth to power up to 10,000 homes. There is an Industrial Park and Stock car racing track in the area.

Consolidated Mines, also known as Great Consolidated mine, but most commonly called Consols or Great Consols was a metalliferous mine about a mile ESE of the village of St Day, Cornwall, England. Mainly active during the first half of the 19th century, its mining sett was about 600 yards north–south; and 2,700 yards east–west, to the east of Carharrack. Although always much troubled by underground water, the mine was at times highly profitable, and it was the largest single producer of copper ore in Cornwall. Today the mine is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

Trevarth (Cornish: Trevargh) is a hamlet in the parish of Lanner, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The name Trevarth comes from the Cornish language words tre, meaning 'farm' or 'settlement', and margh, meaning 'horse', an element it shares with nearby Carn Marth.

Carharrack (Cornish: Karardhek) is a civil parish and village in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated two miles (3 km) east of Redruth in a former mining area. The parish is of a rural/residential character, albeit with an industrial (mostly mining) past and relics of the past abound, primarily in the form of abandoned and broken down engine house buildings. The parish is comparatively small in area, and is bounded to the north and northwest by St Day parish, to the east and southeast by Gwennap parish, and to the southwest and west by Lanner parish.Until 1985, Carharrack was part of the parish of Gwennap but it became a civil parish in its own right with the first meeting of Carharrack Parish Council on 28 May 1985.

Frogpool (Cornish: Polkwilkyn) is a hamlet in the parish of Gwennap (where the 2011 census population was included), Cornwall, England. Frogpool is situated 6 miles (9.7 km) south-west of Truro and 1.2 miles (1.9 km) from the nearest railway station at Perranwell Station. It has a local public house called the Cornish Arms and up until a few years ago also had a local convenience store which has since closed.

Wheal Maid (also Wheal Maiden) is a former mine in the Camborne-Redruth-St Day Mining District, 1.5 km east of St Day.Between 1800 and 1840, profits are said to have been up to £200,000. In 1852, the mine was amalgamated with Poldice Mine and Carharrack Mine and worked as St Day United mine. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the mine site was turned into large lagoons and used as a tip for two other nearby mines: Mount Wellington and Wheal Jane.There were suggestions that the mine could be used as a landfill site for rubbish imported from New York and a power plant that would produce up to 40 megawatts of electricity; the concept was opposed by local residents and by Cornwall County Council, with Doris Ansari, the chair of the council's planning committee, saying that the idea "[did] not seem right for Cornwall".The site was bought from Carnon Enterprises by Gwennap District Council for a price of £1 in 2002. An investigation by the Environment Agency that concluded in 2007 found that soil near the mine had high levels of arsenic, copper and zinc contamination and by 2012, it was deemed too hazardous for human activity.The mine gains attention during dry spells when the lagoons dry up and leaving brightly coloured stains on the pit banks and bed.

Cusgarne (Cornish: Kosgaran) is a village in Cornwall, England, UK. It is about 6 miles (9.7 km) from Truro and 5 miles (8.0 km) from Redruth. It is in the civil parish of Gwennap Cusgarne Community Primary School is in the centre of the village. It caters for children from the ages of 4–11 with the majority moving on to nearby Penryn College or either Richard Lander or Penair schools.The name Cusgarne comes from the Cornish language words koos, meaning 'wood', and garan, meaning 'heron' or 'crane'.
