Consolidated Mines

Wheal Maid (also Wheal Maiden) is a former mine in the Camborne-Redruth-St Day Mining District, 1.5 km east of St Day.Between 1800 and 1840, profits are said to have been up to £200,000. In 1852, the mine was amalgamated with Poldice Mine and Carharrack Mine and worked as St Day United mine. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the mine site was turned into large lagoons and used as a tip for two other nearby mines: Mount Wellington and Wheal Jane.There were suggestions that the mine could be used as a landfill site for rubbish imported from New York and a power plant that would produce up to 40 megawatts of electricity; the concept was opposed by local residents and by Cornwall County Council, with Doris Ansari, the chair of the council's planning committee, saying that the idea "[did] not seem right for Cornwall".The site was bought from Carnon Enterprises by Gwennap District Council for a price of £1 in 2002. An investigation by the Environment Agency that concluded in 2007 found that soil near the mine had high levels of arsenic, copper and zinc contamination and by 2012, it was deemed too hazardous for human activity.The mine gains attention during dry spells when the lagoons dry up and leaving brightly coloured stains on the pit banks and bed.

Goon Gumpas is a hill and a small settlement in west Cornwall, England, UK. It is two miles (3 km) east of Redruth in a former mining area at grid reference SW 747 427. Just to the south is the mining sett of the former Wheal Maid. It is in the civil parish of Gwennap. Aphex Twin, a Cornwall native, named a track from his Richard D. James Album after Goon Gumpas.

Poldice mine is a former metalliferous mine located in Poldice Valley in southwest Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated near the hamlet of Todpool, between the villages of Twelveheads and St Day, three miles (5 km) east of Redruth. Since the early 2000’s the area has been adopted by the local mountain biking community known as the Dice Rollers. The area is now nationally famous as the best location to ride MTB in the south west attracting attention from youtube superstars such as Ben Deakin and his friend Matt Edgie. This is a popular location for mountain bicycling

Creegbrawse is a hamlet in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated between the villages of Chacewater (where the 2011 census population was included ) and Todpool approximately three miles (5 km) east of Redruth.Creegbrawse was a busy mining area in the 19th century. Remains of the mining activity are still present including numerous mineshafts. Since the decline of the industry, the village has become a rural community centred on a crossroads; the roads lead to Chacewater, Twelveheads, Todpool and St Day via Little Beside.

Todpool is a hamlet in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is located between Chacewater and St Day villages and is three miles (5 km) east of Redruth.During the 19th century, Todpool was an important site for tin mining due to its proximity to Poldice mine. Today, disused mineshafts and derelict engine houses are scattered throughout the area. Todpool was once busy enough to support a pub (now a private house) and a church, but is now a quiet backwater of miners' cottages. The road that runs through Todpool is Bownder An Sycamor, which translates from Cornish as Sycamore Lane.

Carharrack (Cornish: Karardhek) is a civil parish and village in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated two miles (3 km) east of Redruth in a former mining area. The parish is of a rural/residential character, albeit with an industrial (mostly mining) past and relics of the past abound, primarily in the form of abandoned and broken down engine house buildings. The parish is comparatively small in area, and is bounded to the north and northwest by St Day parish, to the east and southeast by Gwennap parish, and to the southwest and west by Lanner parish.Until 1985, Carharrack was part of the parish of Gwennap but it became a civil parish in its own right with the first meeting of Carharrack Parish Council on 28 May 1985.

Gwennap (Standard Written Form: Lannwenep (village), Pluw Wenep (parish)) is a village and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is about five miles (8 km) southeast of Redruth. Hamlets of Burncoose, Comford, Coombe, Crofthandy, Cusgarne, Fernsplatt, Frogpool, Hick's Mill, Tresamble and United Downs lie in the parish, as does Little Beside country house. In the 18th and early 19th centuries Gwennap parish was the richest copper mining district in Cornwall, and was called the "richest square mile in the Old World". It is near the course of the Great County Adit which was constructed to drain mines in the area including several of the local once-famous mines such as Consolidated Mines, Poldice mine and Wheal Busy. Today it forms part of area A6i (the Gwennap Mining District) of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. It lends its name to Gwennap Pit, where John Wesley preached eighteen times between 1762 and 1789, although Gwennap Pit is about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) to the northwest, at the hamlet of Busveal near St Day. The pit was caused by mining subsidence in the mid-18th century. After Wesley's death the local people turned the pit into a regular circular shape with turf seats. The location of the pit has been described as being used for Cornish wrestling tournaments prior to its transformation.
