Little Ouse, Cambridgeshire

Brandon Bank is a hamlet in Cambridgeshire, England, although most of its buildings lie across the River Little Ouse in Norfolk. The population is included in the Cambridgeshire civil parish of Littleport.

Burnt Fen is an area of low-lying land crossed by the A1101 road between Littleport in Cambridgeshire and Mildenhall in Suffolk, England. It is surrounded on three sides by rivers, and consists of prime agricultural land, with sparse settlement. It is dependent on pumped drainage to prevent it from flooding. Between 1759 and 1962 the area was managed by the Commissioners of the Burnt Fen First Drainage District, who were then replaced by the Burnt Fen Internal Drainage Board, when the area of responsibility was expanded. Funding for the drainage works is collected by a system of rates, paid by those whose property would be threatened by flooding without the works.

The River Little Ouse, also known as the Brandon River, is a river in the east of England, a tributary of the River Great Ouse. For much of its length it defines the boundary between Norfolk and Suffolk. It rises east of Thelnetham, close to the source of the River Waveney, which flows eastwards while the Little Ouse flows west. The village of Blo' Norton owes its name to the river: it was earlier known as Norton Bell-'eau, from being situated near this "fair stream". In this area the river creates a number of important wetland areas such as at Blo' Norton and Thelnetham Fens, and areas managed by the Little Ouse Headwaters Project. The course continues through Rushford, Thetford, Brandon, and Hockwold before the river joins the Great Ouse north of Littleport in Cambridgeshire. The total length is about 37 miles (60 km). The river is navigable from the Great Ouse to a point 2 miles (3.2 km) above Brandon.

Black Horse Drove is a linear hamlet that lies 7 miles (11 km) north-north-east of Ely in Cambridgeshire, England in the civil parish of Littleport . Black Horse Drove is located off the Ten Mile Bank, a long road which runs alongside the north-western bank of the river Great Ouse between Littleport and Southery in Norfolk. Black Horse Drove is in the Fens and much of the village is around 6 feet (1.8 m) below sea level. The estimated population of Black Horse Drove in 2010 was 220 in 93 dwellings.

Shippea Hill SSSI is a 27.6-hectare (68-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Ely in Cambridgeshire, England. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.The succession of sedimentary layers in the Fens in the Holocene epoch, the period since the last ice age, was determined in the 1930s on the basis of Shippea Hill deposits, although this has been amended as the site has been found to be atypical. It is particularly important for dating the "Fen Clay transgression" of the sea into the Fens in the Holocene.In the early 1930s the pioneer of British Mesolithic archaeology, Grahame Clark collaborated with the botanists Harry and Margaret Godwin to gain a deeper understanding of the environment of past societies by integrating archaeological findings with new scientific techniques in geology and plant sciences. They formed the Fenland Research Committee to study the effect of post-glacial environmental changes on Fenland Mesolithic communities, and their first major collaboration was excavation of Shippea Hill.The site is on private land with no public access. It has been filled in and is now a field.

Southery is a village and civil parish in Norfolk, England, which covers an area of 18.12 km2 (7.00 sq mi) and had a population of 1,324 at the 2011 Census. For local government purposes, it falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. The village's name means 'southerly island'.

Shippea Hill railway station (originally Mildenhall Road and later Burnt Fen) is on the Breckland Line in the east of England, serving the Burnt Fen area of Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. The line runs between Cambridge in the west and Norwich in the east. Shippea Hill is a request stop 77 miles 17 chains (77.21 miles, 124.26 km) from London Liverpool Street via Cambridge, in one of the few areas within Burnt Fen which rises above sea level. The station is on the A1101 road between Littleport and Mildenhall. It has been noted for its low patronage. In 2015/16, only twelve passenger entries/exits were recorded at the station.

Modeney Priory—also spelled Modney and Modeny—was a Benedictine priory in the civil parish of Hilgay, Norfolk, England. Located less than a mile east of the River Great Ouse, Modeney Priory was a cell of Ramsey Abbey. Modeney Priory was founded before 1291 and dissolved c. 1536. Its former location is now occupied by Modney Hall farmhouse. According to field research undertaken by Historic England in 1976: "There are no surface structural remains of the priory. Modney Hall has an 18th/19th century brick cased exterior, but according to a former owner parts of the interior date to the 15th [century]." On 18 April 1544, the Priory was granted to Robert Hagan, who licensed it to James Hawe on 4 February 1545. Francis Blomefield in his An Essay Towards a Topographical History of the County of Norfolk (1807) writes the following succession of owners: "from the Hawes, it came to the Willoughbys; and by Catherine, a daughter of Sir Henry Willoughby, to the Purefoys, and to the Greys, and the Astons, as in Southrey, and is now in Sir Robert Burdet."

Prickwillow railway station was located on the line between Ely and Shippea Hill in Cambridgeshire, England. It served the village of Prickwillow, and closed in 1850.

Littleport railway station is on the Fen line in the east of England, serving the village of Littleport, Cambridgeshire. It is 76 miles (122 km) measured from London Liverpool Street and is situated between Ely and Downham Market stations. Its three-letter station code is LTP. The station and all trains calling are operated by Great Northern (with service to and from London King's Cross.)

Prickwillow Museum, formerly known as the Prickwillow Drainage Engine Museum, tells the story of the changing face of the Fens and its network of drainage systems and pumping stations. The museum is housed in the old pumping station in Prickwillow, four miles (6.4 km) east of the city of Ely in Cambridgeshire, England.The museum contains a major collection of large diesel pumping engines which have all been restored to working order. Prickwillow Museum is funded and run by the Prickwillow Engine Trust, a registered charity, and has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership. For one weekend in the early autumn every year the museum hosts the Prickwillow ploughing festival.
