Bourton-on-the-Hill

Sezincote House (pronounced seas in coat) is the centre of a country estate in the civil parish of Sezincote, in the county of Gloucestershire, England. The house was designed by Samuel Pepys Cockerell, built in 1805, and is a notable example of Neo-Mughal architecture, a 19th-century reinterpretation of 16th and 17th-century architecture from the Mughal Empire. At the time of its construction, British India was becoming the "jewel in the crown" of the world's largest empire. According to Shashi Tharoor, the palace is an 'incongruous monument to the opulence of the nabobs' loot', referring to the construction of the palace using the wealth acquired by the East India Company's loot and plunder in Bengal.Sezincote is dominated by its red sandstone colour, typical in Mughal architecture, but features a copper-covered dome instead of the typical white marble. The fenestration is composed of a sequence of extra-large windows with an arch-shape at the top. The arch, however, is not a simple or typical design, but instead a shell-like fan that is evidence of the Mughal influence. The interior design is more typical European style. The landscape was designed by Humphry Repton. It is essentially a renaissance-style garden with elements of Hindu style, as seen in the crescent bridge with columns.

Sezincote or Seasoncote is a settlement and civil parish comprising Sezincote House and its estate, situated about 3 miles from Stow-on-the-Wold in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. In 2001 the parish had a population of 90. The parish touches Bourton-on-the-Hill, Condicote, Cutsdean, Longborough and Moreton-in-Marsh. Sezincote has a parish meeting.

The Anglican Church of St Lawrence at Bourton-on-the-Hill in the Cotswold District of Gloucestershire, England was built in the 12th century. It is a grade I listed building.

St James' Church is the Church of England parish church of Longborough, Gloucestershire, England. It is in the deanery of Stow, the archdeaconry of Cheltenham and the diocese of Gloucester. Its benefice is combined with those of St David, Moreton-in-Marsh, St Mary, Batsford, St Thomas of Canterbury, Todenham, and St Leonard, Lower Lemington. It contains fabric from the 12th century and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

Ganborough is a hamlet located along the A424 road, approximately 2 miles NNW of Stow on the Wold. Ganborough is located in Gloucestershire, a county in South-West England. It also lies in the Cotswold Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Although its boundaries are uncertain, the hamlet includes the Coach and Horses public house, owned by the local Donnington Brewery, and the surrounding houses. There is also a chambered tomb situated on a nearby hilltop.

New Park Quarry (grid reference SP175282) is a 1.3-hectare (3.2-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire, notified in 1987. The site is listed in the 'Cotswold District' Local Plan 2001-2011 (on line) as a Regionally Important Geological Site (RIGS).

Batsford Arboretum is a 55-acre (220,000 m2) arboretum and botanical garden near Batsford in Gloucestershire, England, about 1½ miles north-west of Moreton-in-Marsh. It is owned and run by the Batsford Foundation, a registered charity, and is open to the public daily throughout most of the year. The arboretum sits on the Cotswold scarp and contains around 2,900 trees, with a large collection of Japanese maples, magnolias and pines.

Batsford is a village and civil parish in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. The village is about 1½ miles north-west of Moreton-in-Marsh. There is a falconry centre close to the village and Batsford Arboretum is nearby, situated on the Cotswold escarpment. Moreton-in-Marsh and Batsford War Memorial, on the High Street in Moreton-in-Marsh, commemorates the village's dead of two World Wars.

Longborough is a village and civil parish 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the market town of Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire. The parish population taken at the 2011 census was 471.The village is about 0.5 miles (800 m) east of the A424, around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of the Fosse Way (A429) and is on the Heart of England Way. Longborough has a village shop and post office; a farm shop; an opera house; two public houses, one in the village itself, and the other in the hamlet of Ganborough; a village school and the 12th-century Church of England parish church of St James.In September 2001, Longborough was the winner of the Bledisloe Cup competition for best kept village.Longborough hosts the Longborough Festival Opera, in a converted barn at the edge of the village. The village falls in the 'Fosseridge' electoral ward. This ward starts in Broadwell passes Longborough and ends in the northeast at Todenham. The total ward population taken at the 2011 census was 1,794.

Blockley is a village, civil parish and ecclesiastical parish in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England, about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Moreton-in-Marsh. Until 1931 Blockley was an exclave of Worcestershire. The civil and ecclesiastical parish boundaries are roughly coterminous, and include the hamlets of Draycott, Paxford and Aston Magna, the residential development at Northwick and the deserted hamlets of Upton and Upper Ditchford. Blockley village is on Blockley Brook, a tributary of Knee Brook. Knee Brook forms the northeastern boundary of the parish and is a tributary of the River Stour.

The Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold (21 March 1646) took place during the First English Civil War. It was a Parliamentarian victory by detachments of the New Model Army over the last Royalist field army. In the spring of 1646, King Charles I of England was getting ever more desperate to hold the Royalist cause together whilst waiting for the long promised relief forces from Ireland, Scotland and France. Sir Jacob Astley took command of the Royalist forces in the west and began to gather up the remnants from the handful of Royalist garrisons still left in the West Midlands to create a new field army. At this point in the war, Royalist morale was low. However, Astley, a stalwart of the Royalist commanders and an experienced soldier, was able to cobble together a force of 3,000. While returning to Oxford he was intercepted and defeated at Stow-on-the-Wold.

Donnington is a small village and civil parish in Gloucestershire, near the Roman Fosse Way in the Cotswold District Council area of south west England. It is situated on a hill a mile and a half north of Stow-on-the-Wold, of which until 1894 it formed a detached hamlet, so that the north transept in the parish church was reserved for the parish. There are fine views over the Evenlode valley. It is notable for its Cotswold stone houses. They include Donnington mill, on a medieval site, where the river Dikler emerges to form an artificial lake and mill pond of nearly five acres, which became Richard Arkell's Donnington Brewery in 1865; Little Barrow, a late Arts and Crafts movement country house on a medieval site remodelled and extended from a house of about 1800 in Cotswold manorial style with gardens by the distinguished Sussex architect Walter Godfrey in the 1930s; and Donnington Manor, just north of the village, which dates to the 18th century, when it may have been rebuilt on the site of an earlier house. Crawthorne Wood of over 50 a. is the only large area of woodland. On 21 March 1646 the Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold, the last pitched battle of the English Civil War, is believed to have taken place in the parish, when Lord Astley and 3,000 Royalists were defeated by Parliamentarian forces.
