Saint-Amand, Fleurus

The Battle of Fleurus, fought on 1 July 1690 near Fleurus, then part of the Spanish Netherlands, now in modern Belgium, was a major engagement of the Nine Years' War. A French army led by Luxembourg defeated an Allied force under Waldeck. Luxembourg's victory had limited strategic impact, since Louis XIV of France ordered him to end his campaign in the Netherlands, and instead reinforce the Dauphin on the Rhine. This gave the Allies time to withdraw to Brussels, and rebuild their army.

The Battle of Fleurus of August 29, 1622 was fought in the Spanish Netherlands between a Spanish army and the Protestant forces of Ernst von Mansfeld and Christian of Brunswick during the Eighty Years' War and Thirty Years' War. The bloody struggle left the Protestants mangled and the Spanish masters of the field and would ensure Catholic dominance in Germany till the intervention of Denmark–Norway.

Ligny (French pronunciation: [liɲi]; Walloon: Lignè) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Sombreffe, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. Previously its own municipality, a 1977 fusion of the Belgian municipalities made it an ancienne commune of Sombreffe.

The Battle of Fleurus, on 26 June 1794, was an engagement during the War of the First Coalition, between the army of the First French Republic, under General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, and the Coalition army (Britain, Hanover, Dutch Republic, and Habsburg monarchy), commanded by Prince Josias of Coburg, in the most significant battle of the Flanders Campaign in the Low Countries during the French Revolutionary Wars. Both sides had forces in the area of around 80,000 men but the French were able to concentrate their troops and defeat the First Coalition. The Allied defeat led to the permanent loss of the Austrian Netherlands and to the destruction of the Dutch Republic. The battle marked a turning point for the French army, which remained ascendant for the rest of the War of the First Coalition.

Fleurus (French pronunciation: [flœ.ʁys] ; Walloon: Fleuru) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. It has been the site of four major battles. The municipality consists of the following districts: Brye, Heppignies, Fleurus, Lambusart, Saint-Amand, Wagnelée, Wanfercée-Baulet (wa: Wanfercêye-Bålet), and Wangenies.

Marbais (Walloon: Marbé) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the Belgian municipality of Villers-la-Ville, located in the province of Walloon Brabant, Belgium.

The Battle of Lambusart (16 June 1794) saw a Republican French army led by Jean Baptiste Jourdan try to cross the Sambre River against a combined Dutch and Habsburg Austrian army under William V, Hereditary Prince of Orange. This battle was the culmination of the fourth of five attempts to consolidate a foothold on the north side of the Sambre. The clash occurred during the War of the First Coalition, part of a wider struggle known as the Wars of the French Revolution. In 1794, Lambusart was an independent village, but it is now part of the Fleurus municipality. Lambusart is located about 10 kilometres (6 mi) northeast of Charleroi. Three times during the spring of 1794, the French armies attempted to cross the Sambre in the face of resistance by First Coalition forces. After three defeats, they were reinforced by four divisions from the Army of the Moselle under General Jourdan on 4 June, who then took command and led the combined forces to cross the Sambre for the fourth time, and lay siege to Charleroi for the second time, on 12 June. On the 16th, the Prince of Orange counter-attacked and broke the French right flank, forcing Jourdan to lift the siege and withdraw south of the Sambre.

Wangenies (Walloon: Wandjniye) is a village of Wallonia, and a district of the municipality of Fleurus, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. It was its own municipality prior to the fusion of municipalities of 1977.

Lambusart (Walloon: Lambussåt) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Fleurus located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium.

Heppignies (Walloon: Epniye) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Fleurus located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium.It is also the name of an industrial estate in the northern district of the Walloon city of Fleurus, which is to the south of the old village centre and next to the junction of the R3 A15 main roads.

Tilly (Walloon: Tiyî) is a village of Wallonia and district of the municipality of Villers-la-Ville, located in the province of Walloon Brabant, Belgium. It had a population of 1,707 inhabitants on December 31, 2007. Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly (1559-1631), a field marshal who commanded the Catholic League's forces in the Thirty Years' War, was born here. Near the village lies a Gallo-Roman tumulus called the Tumulus of Tilly.

Tongrenelle (French pronunciation: [tɔ̃ɡʁənɛl]) is a hamlet of Wallonia in the municipality of Sombreffe, district of Tongrinne, located in the province of Namur), Belgium. It is east of the village of Ligny and north of the village of Boignée and on the south-eastern side of the village of Tongrinne. Within the hamlet is the Ferme-Château de Tongrenelle. A castle existed on the site which entered the historical record in 1209. During the Battle of Ligny 16 June 1815 the castle, a formidable redoubt, was garrisoned by a contingent from the 3rd Battalion of the Prussian 27th Regiment. during the first half of the 19th century the castle fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1860. What remains is now a moated manor house with buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
