Swettenham Meadows Nature Reserve

St Peter's Church is in the village of Swettenham, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Congleton. Its benefice is combined with that of Marton, Siddington, Eaton and Hulme Walfield.

Swettenham is a village and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. According to the 2001 Official UK Census, the population of the entire civil parish was 248, increasing to 291 at the 2011 Census. The civil parish includes the hamlet of Kermincham. The place-name 'Swettenham' is first attested in the Pipe Rolls of 1183, where it appears as Suetenhala. It appears as Swetenham in 1259 in the County Court, City Court and Eyre Rolls of Chester. The name means 'Sweta's homestead'.Within the parish is the Swettenham Arms pub and restaurant, Kermincham Hall, Swettenham Meadows Nature Reserve (managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust) and the Lovell Quinta Arboretum (managed by Tatton Garden Society since 2003). The arboretum was founded by astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell, who lived at Swettenham from 1948 until his death in 2012. The parish is separated from the adjoining parish of Brereton by the River Dane to the south. The parish is bounded by Lower Withington to the north, Marton and Somerford Booths to the east, and Twemlow to the west. The Dane Valley Way long-distance footpath passes through the village on its route from Buxton to Northwich.

Swettenham Hall is a country house standing to the southeast of the village of Swettenham, Cheshire, England. It dates from the 17th century and was remodelled in the 19th century. The house is constructed in pebbledashed brick on a stone plinth with a slate roof. It has a symmetrical façade in seven bays. The central bay has a single-storey canted bay window, and the second and sixth bays have two-storey canted bay windows. All the windows are sashes. At the rear of the house is a large three-bay canted bay window containing three pairs of French windows, above which are gables. The house is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. Also listed at Grade II is a range of farm buildings to the east of the hall dating from the middle of the 18th century, and a private chapel to the northwest of the hall built in 1852.

Lower Withington is a civil parish and village in Cheshire, England. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 492. Jodrell Bank Observatory lies mostly within the parish. It is on the B5392 near the A535 road, 11 kilometres (7 mi) south-west of Macclesfield and 29 kilometres (18 mi) south of Manchester.

Clonterbrook House is a former manor house in the parish of Swettenham, Cheshire, England. It was built in 1697 for Jeffery and Katherine Lockett. It passed from the Lockett family in 1769, but was bought by Derek and Elizabeth Lockett in 1939. They restored the house in 1949. The house is constructed in brick, and it has a stone-slate roof. There are two storeys plus an attic, and it is in five bays. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. Around the house are three former farm buildings that have been converted into other uses; they are all listed at Grade II. The former shippon, which was damaged in an air raid in 1941, has been rebuilt as a music room. A former bakehouse is now an office, and a barn has been developed into a picture gallery. Clonter Opera Theatre has been built adjacent to these buildings.

Jodrell Hall is a country house near Jodrell Bank in the parish of Twemlow, in the county of Cheshire, England. Requisitioned during World War II, the building later became an educational establishment, now known as Terra Nova School. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Terra Nova School is a prep school in Cheshire, England for children from two and a half to thirteen years of age. It began as a school for boys in 1897, and today educates boys and girls. Children aged two and a half to seven attend the pre-prep school, and pupils aged eight to thirteen attend the prep school. A charitable trust since 1955, the life and work of the school are overseen by a distinguished governing body. Since 1939 the school has occupied a site of just over 36 acres (15 ha) including extensive playing fields, in a rural area within the bounds of Holmes Chapel. At the core of the site is Jodrell Hall, a country house begun in 1779 with additions in 1835.

Somerford Park is situated off the A54 road midway between Congleton and Holmes Chapel in Cheshire. Somerfield Hall was a Georgian brick-built country house which used to stand in the park as the seat of the Shakerley Baronets family, but was demolished in 1926. The original house was built around 1720 for Peter Shakerley. The Shakerleys had owned land in the area since the reign of Henry III. Several generations of the Shakerley family had previously lived at Hulme Hall near Northwich since the mid-15th century before the family moved to Somerford. The house was then extended in the 18th century by architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard and enlarged again around 1800 by Lawrence Robinson of Middleton, Lancashire by the addition of a large rectangular wing at right angles to the existing 9-bay house. The new front faced the park and boasted a central domed bow. The house was then altered by Anthony Salvin for Sir Charles Watkin Shakerley in 1859-60 with the addition of an Italianate porch. The parkland was laid out in the 19th century by John Webb. The house was demolished in 1926 and much of the parkland turned into farmland, although the chapel, icehouse and 18th-century stables survive, but in a ruinous condition. All Saints Chapel is listed Grade II*. An equestrian centre was established on part of the estate in 1976.

All Saints Chapel, Somerford is in an isolated position near the hamlet of Brereton Heath, between Congleton and Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. The chapel is in the Anglican benefice of Astbury and Smallwood in the deanery of Congleton, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the diocese of Chester.

The Mark II is a radio telescope located at Jodrell Bank Observatory, near Goostrey, Cheshire, in the north-west of England. It was built on the site of the 218 ft (66.4 m) Transit Telescope. Construction was completed in 1964. The telescope's design was used as the basis of the 85 ft (26 m) Goonhilly 1 dish, and the Mark III telescope is also based on a similar design.The original dish surface of the telescope was more accurate than the Lovell Telescope's at the time it was made, meaning that it was better suited for observations at higher frequencies. As well as operating as a solo instrument, it has been used as an interferometer with the Lovell Telescope, which provides a 425 m (1,394 ft) baseline. It is commonly used as part of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), and for Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations.

Blackden Manor is a former manor house to the southeast of the village of Goostrey, Cheshire, England. It is a timber-framed building that was re-cased in brick in the late 19th century. The house was restored in 1920 by the architect James Henry Sellers. He added new wings to the rear of the house, forming a courtyard. The house is constructed in sandstone with a slate roof; it has two storeys and an attic. The house is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. Also listed at Grade II is a two-storey brick farm building to the southeast of the house, dating from 1709.

Jodrell Bank Observatory ( JOD-rəl) in Cheshire, England, hosts a number of radio telescopes as part of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. The observatory was established in 1945 by Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the university, to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar in the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteoroids, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope. Its diameter of 250 ft (76 m) makes it the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. There are three other active telescopes at the observatory; the Mark II, and 42 ft (13 m) and 7 m diameter radio telescopes. Jodrell Bank Observatory is the base of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), a National Facility run by the University of Manchester on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council. The Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre and an arboretum are in Lower Withington, and the Lovell Telescope and the observatory near Goostrey and Holmes Chapel. The observatory is reached from the A535. The Crewe to Manchester Line passes by the site, and Goostrey station is a short distance away. In 2019, the observatory became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
