Hartford Connecticut Temple

Farmington is a town in Hartford County in the Farmington Valley area of central Connecticut in the United States. The town is part of the Capitol Planning Region. The population was 26,712 at the 2020 census. It sits 10 miles west of Hartford at the hub of major I-84 interchanges, 20 miles south of Bradley International Airport and two hours by car from New York City and Boston. It is home to the world headquarters of several large corporations including Otis Elevator Company, United Technologies, and Carvel. The northwestern section of Farmington is a suburban neighborhood called Unionville.

The Pequabuck River is a river, approximately 19 miles (30.6 km) in length, which rises in Litchfield County, Connecticut, and courses through neighboring Hartford County before emptying into the Farmington River in Farmington. The river has played a crucial role in the development of Plainville, Connecticut, in particular. The river's lower drainage basin consists of industrial and urban areas, and effluents from these areas pollute the river's waters. The Pequabuck drove a water wheel that provided 8 horsepower to the Upper Lock Shop in Plymouth, Connecticut, a facility which would eventually become the Lewis Lock Company in 1851 and, finally, the once-renowned Eagle Lock Company.: 55  The river banks were historically the site of one of United States' first malleable iron-producing units, known as Malleable Iron Works (later Andrew Terry and Company).: 88 

Miss Porter's School (MPS) is an elite American private college preparatory school for girls founded in 1843, and located in Farmington, Connecticut. The school draws students from 21 states, 31 countries (with dual-citizenship and/or residence), and 17 countries (citizenship alone) and international students comprised 14% as of the 2017–2018 year. The average class size was 10 students in 2017.The community traditionally denotes those new to campus collectively as New Girls, those returning members as Old Girls, and alumnae as Ancients.

The Pequabuck Bridge is a historic stone arch bridge, carrying a paved multiuse trail across the Pequabuck River in Farmington, Connecticut. Built in 1833, the bridge formerly carried the adjacent Meadow Road. It is one of the state's only surviving early 19th-century stone arch bridges and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Gen. George Cowles House, also known as the Solomon Cowles House, is a historic house at 130 Main Street in Farmington, Connecticut. Built in 1803, it is a prominent local example of Federal style architecture in brick, built for a prominent local family. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 1982.

The Austin F. Williams Carriagehouse and House is a historic house at 127 Main Street in Farmington, Connecticut. Built in the mid-19th century, the property was designated a National Historic Landmark for the role it played in the celebrated case of the Amistad Africans, and as a "station" on the Underground Railroad.

The First Church of Christ, Congregational, also known as First Church 1652 is a historic church at 75 Main Street in Farmington, Connecticut. Built in 1771, this Greek Revival church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975 for its role in sheltering the Amistad Africans before their return to Africa.

The Farmington Historic District encompasses a 275-acre (111 ha) area of the town center of Farmington, Connecticut. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The area roughly corresponds to the section of Route 10 between Route 4 and U.S. Route 6, and includes 115 buildings, primarily residences, built before 1835. The district includes several National Historic Landmarks, include Hill-Stead, the Austin F. Williams Carriagehouse and House, the First Church of Christ, Congregational, and the Stanley-Whitman House.The town of Farmington was settled in 1640 and incorporated in 1645. It flourished during the 18th century, with a variety of trade and industry, that for a time rivaled the economic importance of Hartford. In the early 19th century it benefited for a time from the construction of the Farmington Canal, which passed through the town. The c. 1830 brick Union Hotel, located in the town center, was built to serve travelers on the canal, and is now an administration building for Miss Porter's School. The town's Main Street was laid out at an early date, and retained its appearance in part because the town's economy declined with the advent of the railroad (which bypassed the town) and the decline of the canal.Several of the district's building were constructed by Judah Woodruff, a prominent local builder. Among these is the First Church, built in 1771. It is one of the state's only surviving colonial era churches, specifically retaining the original orientation of its main entrance and pulpit on the long sides of the building.

The Lewis Walpole Library in Farmington, Connecticut, possesses important collections of 18th-century British literary remains, including an unrivalled quantity of Horace Walpole's papers and effects from his estate at Strawberry Hill.The collections include 18th-century British books, manuscripts, prints, drawings, and paintings, as well as important examples of the decorative arts. They were gathered by Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis (1895–1979, a graduate of Yale in 1918) and his wife Annie Burr Lewis (1902–1959) in a group of 18th-century buildings at Farmington. The Lewis Walpole Library was presented to Yale University, of whose Library it forms a department. Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis also left two volumes of memoirs, much of them relevant to the library: Collectors Progress (1946) and One Man's Education (1967).The Library offers residential fellowships and travel grants, along with exhibitions, lectures, seminars, and colloquia.

The Stanley-Whitman House is a historic house museum at 37 High Street in Farmington, Connecticut. Built ca 1720, it is one of the oldest houses in Farmington. A well-preserved saltbox with post-medieval construction features, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and National Register of Historic Places when the registry opened in 1966.

Farmington High School is a public high school in Farmington, Connecticut that serves grades 9-12. In Newsweek's 2005 poll, FHS was ranked #1 in Connecticut and #271 in the nation, scoring high on both the challenge index and the equity and excellence index. Presently, the school is ranked #5 in the state by U.S. News & World Report.In June 2017, a town vote to build a new school occurred. Advocates for the new building highlighted the severe aging and inadequacy of the existing facilities. Due to budgetary concerns, the vote did not pass. In June 2021, a subsequent referendum was held, with the proposed renovation estimated to cost $135.6 million; this referendum passed by a wide margin.

The Gridley-Parson-Staples House is a historic house museum at 1554 Farmington Avenue in Farmington, Connecticut. Probably built about 1760, it is the oldest surviving house in northwestern Farmington, and a fine example of 18th century Georgian architecture. It is now home to the Farmington Historical Society, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
